I think Mercedes will be more successful at hiding the EV platform with an S variant than BMW has been with this 7. The S has a design heritage that draws on some extremely imposing vehicles.
Obviously, the future of icon automobiles such as the M-B S-Class will pique the interests of armies of car enthusiasts. Myself included-and this despite the decreasing relevance of such large luxury segment sedans in many regions of the globe. Cars in the approx. 5 meter length segment are the "new" luxury segment nice size contestants. The E-Class, the BMW 5er, the Audi A6, Porsche Taycan and so forth. SUVs' and sport activity vehicles as well. Personally perceiving the EQS sedan as being ungainly rather than categorically ugly, some sort of fusion of the the W223s more conventional design paired with EQS elements could result in a highly attractive, eye pleasing car. I saw some images by an independant designer going by the name of colekessel on these forums quite recently. My opinion is that he comes quite close to nailing it. The upcoming MB.EA-L electric architecture will surely provide a suitable canvas that underlies some compelling automotive designcraft. As for the BMW 7/i7, I simply find that car far too large, especially pertaining to it's height and length. And certainly, the front end is polarizing. However, it's clean flank structure is attractive.
I thought the LCI was gonna make it look more in line with the Neue Klasse design language.

It will be a little difficult to fix the ugly face. The worst 7 series in history.
Nice! Changing the shape of the grille could fix the car. The shape and proportions are great, and the driving experience is class leading. It's just let down by the designs of the lights and bumpers. I think inspiration from the XM will be helpful.The facelift front us leaning more towards XM than N-K
