UK games industry outlet MCV has reported that both the next Xbox AND the PlayStation 4 will be shown at this year's E3 in June.

This isn't the first time that a publication has cited an unnamed source with information like this, but this isn't some unknown central European games blog - MCV's credibilty makes this particular report worth paying attention to.

Speaking on Twitter, MCV's online editor Ben Parfitt said "Obviously we can't reveal our sources. But you have my personal word on this - the source is exemplary, 100% concrete, ultra high level."

We shouldn't necessarily expect a full-blown reveal, though - we might just see the announcement. Editor-in-Chief Michael French told IGN: "This is very credible. Even if we don't see the hardware itself, or know a price or date, key publishers and developers are expecting some nod towards what direction PS4 will take at E3 this year. Sony isn't stupid - it knows that if Microsoft is planning to also say something about its next console, it can't be left behind."

Many were expecting Microsoft to come out on stage at E3 with some information about the new Xbox, but Sony's reveal would be more surprising, as a new console at this stage in the PlayStation 3's life cycle would fly in the face of the company's stated "ten-year plan".

If both Sony and Microsoft do indeed reveal their new consoles at the same time as Nintendo details the release schedule and pricing for the Wii U, this would quite probably be the biggest E3 in history.

Are you ready for a three-way showdown? Is it still too soon?

IMO, Sony's future is looking bleak. The company needs a new direction. They are still stuck in the 80's approach of giving precedence to hardware over everything. In the last few years there has been a paradigm shift such that many companies can now offer Sony equivalent hardware at a lower price. They seem to be failing at wrapping their head around the fact the CES industry nowadays is not only about being a superior hardware vendor, but 'content' as well. Sony still want to create proprietary formats and sell you products which are tangible while the rest of the industry transitions into the virtual era. If they dont make a breakthrough in content delivery pretty soon, Sony may well become the Saab of the Electronics industry by the end of this decade.

It's sad to see a giant falling. Sony need a complete revamp of its management if shareholders want their investment to stand a chance in flourishing in the future. Two areas that Sony have critically failed in are:

Computers: They've been selling overly engineered products at the wrong price. A €1,400 Atom powered netbook? Or how about a €600 tablet when the iPad costs less and the Amazon prime even less. What are these guys smoking.

MP3 players: Selling MP3 players that can only play files that have been converted into Sony's proprietary ATRAC format. *face palm*

Phones: Not foreseeing the mobile future and treating mobile handsets as a side business. Only recently did they buy and wholly own Sony Ericsson.

Samsung are outselling them in the TV market and the only things of value Sony has is Playstation 3.

The 360 is alright, but the PS3 is more powerful and still has some life left.

Whatever happens, this year I will own a Wii U and that's what matters most to me.

The Wii U will be tricky sell for Nintendo if they don't price it right. One only needs to look at videos of iPad 2 and Apple TV mirroring to realise how big a threat Apple is to the Wii U's success. More importantly there are already hundreds of millions of iPhones, iPod touches and iPads in circulation in addition to the very low cost of an Apple TV. A Wii controller with all accessories was incredibly expensive at launch. Only god knows how much that Wii U remote will retail for. Nintendo better have a good defensive plan because gaming on iOS is just getting better and better, not to mention cheaper. GTA 3 on the iPad is amazingly playable and the graphics are level with PS2. We'll see even more awesome games and support from developers this year.

Agreed Luw. And this is what I had pointed out earlier last year, explaining why the PS Vita is going to have it's work cut out.

That kind of performance from a $499 tablet? Insane!

^^ Cashmere, the Vita does not compare to a laptop. At all. I'm not saying the Vita will be a great success or anything, but comparing it to a laptop is just stupid, sorry.

Heh. Sorry Luw, but I really do think you should stick to cars ;)
Nintendo has brands like Metroid, Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. It will not be tricky to sell, since it has the most powerful franchises of the industry exclusively behind them. Just look at the 3DS. It was considered a failure until Nintendo dropped the price and introduced Mario Kart 7 and Mario 3D Land in 1 week. It's selling like hotcakes now, with these two titles already in the top 10 U.S sales charts (which is a great feat considering the still smallish 3DS user base (the system is pretty new)
One thing I do agree on, and that is that the price cannot be too high. A good price point is key, for the Wii U (and I sadly don't think it will be cheap)

And naming Apple in the gaming industry is a complete and utter JOKE. iOS games/gaming does NOT threaten mainstream console gaming. Maybe a tiny bit in the portable console market, but the console market not at all.
And the Wii U control input is just vastly superior to what Apple can ever offer with it's crappy touchscreen-only controls. The Wii U controller has a touchscreen AND regular buttons/sticks/bumpers, not to mention the fact that it's fully compatible with a Wii controller..

Only god knows how much that Wii U remote will retail for.

Maybe $20?
I mean, it's nothing more than a small resistive touchscreen (same as the DS/3DS, very cheap to mass produce), some batteries and some plastic holding it all together. iPhone/iPad has a more expensive/modern capacitive touchscreen.
The Wii U is going to stream ALL content to the controller, which means there's close to zero hardware inside (the controller is extremely light too, unlike an iPad. Plus it is contoured, unlike an iPad. Meaning it will actually be comfortable to hold for gaming, unlike an iPad).

Except it is not a laptop, its a tablet -The Asus Transformer prime. Its the world's first quad core (actually it has 5 cores) powered tablet with a Nvidia GPU. In the video above it looks like a laptop because it is connected to the optional keyboard dock.

and here is the best bit of CES 2012 IMO, Asus just announced 2 days ago, that a 7" version of the exact same tablet (quad core, Ice Cream Sandwhich, 8MP Camera) for $249. That is $50 LESS then a PS Vita.

haha, and I'm assuming you know better than the President of Nintendo? He already acknowledged that Apple is Nintendo's biggest threat.

Apple Bigger Near Term Threat Than Microsoft, Nintendo Of America President Says - Forbes

That's Reggie. He's not Nintendo's president, but it's U.S marketing tool ;) Nintendo's real President is mr Satoru Iwata

And we are still talking about consoles aren't we? Apple doesn't make a video game home console, nor do they make games for them. So they don't threaten the Xbox 360, Wii or PS3.
Besides, a tablet or phone is not a dedicated gaming machine. Android games and iOS games don't threaten the home console market with it's $2 junk games (I have like 70 iOS games, some really good, but still)

Doesn't matter what his name is or whether is American or Japanese, what is important is that he is part of the senior management for Nintendo and he is acknowledging that Apple is a threat ;)

We are talking about the gaming industry as a whole. The only reason why people play games on consoles is because portable devices did not have the kind of processing power needed to play high end games such as COD/Skyrim,etc. The modern tablet industry is barely 2 years old (considering the ipad was launched in 2010) and we are already getting a wave of quad core processing power from as little as $250. Can you imagine what kind of processing power/efficiency/ we will be seeing on handhelds in another 2 years? Put it to you this way, if your ipad 2 could play all your favorite titles just as good as your PS3 / Xbox, where do you think you would spend most of your gaming time, confined to the couch of your house, or the possibility to play anywhere and anytime on your tablet?

You can't replace a console experience on big screen and real game controller with a tablet, it will steal parts but will never replace it.

When you say mainstream gaming you probably mean guys will overclocked PCs playing Counter Strike Source. Guess what those guys are doing in 2012? Spending £3.99 on green pants for their Xbox Live avatar :D

The Nintendo Wii completely changed gaming. It opened up gaming to non-gamers and Angry Birds pushed the boundaries even further. The value of games being sold that don't require dual analogue sticks, a mouse or a keyboard is massive. Stores like Game and Play are struggling because more people are being drawn to micro-games. That's not to say that people like me no longer enjoy fraging 01:00am in the morning. What makes micro-gaming even better are the prices. iPad games are dirty cheap and impulsive. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are safe but the Nintendo Wii U will be subject to some element of canabalisation from iOS depending on price and what Apple allow developers to do this year.

You talk about titles? Guess what, SEGA is on the iOS and Rock Star games just released GTA for iOS. EA is already on-board and more game studious will do. What is keeping consoles safe from iOS at the moment is Apple's intent on keeping bluetooth looked down. Once Apple opens up the bluetooth protocol on the iPhone and iPad, we'll see a flood of add-on physical buttons and gamepads.

GEARS OF WAR 3 HORDE 2.0.

On a tablet or phone ?? No freakkin wayyy

Its not going to happen over night, but it will happen eventually. I remember when notebooks first came out, consumers moaned "That screen is too small, it doesnt have a proper mouse, no way I am going to use that over my desktop". Decades later, for the first time Desktop sales are now declining while the mobile platform grows exponentially. Like I said, not over night, but it will happen.

Atention gentlemen:

Xbox 720 would be just 6 times more powerful than 360, which would be a 20% more than Wii U. These numbers appear to be quite tame, as normaly the new consoles use to be much more powerful than the previous one, in order to be able to run much more advanced games.

Now the question is: Will Sony launch a cheap and not that powerful PS4?.

If the answer is NO, then I might start considering the Wii U as a replacement for my PS3.

This here pretty much confirms what I mentioned earlier about the demise of the console market.

Just look at those graphics. And to think that all of that is being done over the cloud using a LAN cable. Mind = blown.

Far from it. Our internet lines are already overburdened. Have you ever tried watching a youtube clip when there are 2-3 other people using the internet line? Yeah, it's slow and laggy. Now try playing game over the cloud while your spouse/friend/brother is torrenting and listening to music on Spotify.

This is why I still enjoy Bluray movie. The quality, sound especially, is superior to any HD video on the web and I never have to worry about any stuttering. Cloud gaming is an excellent proposition but the telecommunications industry is way behind our ever increasing consumption of data.

Looks like those pics were fake (of the "new" Xbox & PS anyways), though I hear Microsoft and Sony alike are ramping up development to show off their new systems at E3 2013... Should be exciting!
