I bet the S Facelift will have this screen too. So pointless. They will turn the experience of owning these cars into subscriptions. Navigation will cost $99/mo and so forth. Horrible. I am all for tech in car but they have lost me with the post-purchase monetization strategy.

If cars are becoming easy-to-make appliances in the wake of electrification––and it seems like they are––the only way to stay competitive in the consumer car market is through monopolizing 1. battery tech (the Germans have lost that battle), 2. legacy software (dominated by the Silicon valley but still open for contestation), 3. going further upmarket and offering exclusive ornamental and technological luxuries (hence the recent initiatives by both BMW and Merc to do just this).

Audi is a bit iffy. I don't consider the current A4/5 or Q5/Q7 to have a better quality interior than the BMW 3er/4er/X3/X5. However, the A6/7/8 line have incredibly high quality interior, I would say higher quality than the 5er/8er, but not the 7er.
Quite the opposite. The solidity of the Q5 is miles ahead of the A6. I can also attest that manufacturers concentrate on mass selling vehicles… ie the Q5 for Audi. The interior feels built like a vault. The A6 is flimsy in comparison

Because we are searching the really best modern and elegant interior - worldwide. This E-class interior surely doesn't belong to that.
We can find one in w213. Still great interior. W214 interior at least on photos doesnt look premium at all.

I'm talking about the current gen 2017-present Q5 vs the C8 generation 2019-present A6. IDK, I work at an Audi dealer, for me the experience is opposite. All the Q5s feel flimsy, while the A6 feels way more refined and with better material and build quality inside.

I view the Q5 as cheaper build quality because it's more mass-produced, same thing with the Q7 which is built at the same plant as the VW Up!

Love this trim..

I need that center console to match it though. Mercedes really needs to make this happen.

So to adjust your vents you have to go into the screen menu and then press upper body for moving the vent to your upper body or face. It would probably be quicker to just move the vent manually. Probably an unnecessary funtion in my opinion

Here is the same video with some added features for the comfort.

Maybe my experience has been different since I have had the S versions of both. The interior of my S6 felt very cheap and flimsy compared to than the SQ5 and compared to an E-tron, two levels lower in terms of quality and fit (they have the same interface). The S6 also flexed a lot more over weird surfaces. The SQ5 feels like a tank in comparison.

The touch points on the S6 also felt very sloppy (leathers were not integrated well over hard surfaces) and overall did not justify the $80K plus price tag.

Agreed, it is obvious the western world favors a more tactical approach to interior designs with luxurious"designer" materials and hands-on switchgear. The W213 E-Class had wood/carbon-fiber inlays that were molded into the dashboard and extended into the door cards with craftsman-like shapes that entertain the eye, topped off with the old-world speaker grills.

This new has none of those qualities craftsmen-like qualities.
The surfaces are flat and rather boring IMO. The Chinese seem to favor the "hands-off" approach with far less crafty material detailing. Technology like apps and graphics with cheesy switchgear seems to be the main theme in the Chinese market with far less creativity to materials.

This new E-Class (as well as some new BMWs) meets that target in a lot of ways.

Once the screens go off in the new E, the dashboard will be about as exciting as a cell phone turned off with nothing to show but that stupid elongated ac vent that looks like it belongs in a mini-van. I believe the body design will turn out pretty well on the W214 E, but this interior is a big no for me.
