The middle section bloat on the upcoming 5 Series is not good at all. I understand the simple body line, but it's way too bloated in that entire section, and then somehow gets recessed into the body at the lower body line, which just makes it look fatter than it is. Instead of making that lower section fatter instead of the middle. The middle section should be narrower, with it flaring/getting fatter at the wheel arch instead. Visually, the MK8 Golf suffers from a similar issue for me, compared to the MK7.

For reference, the G30 has a much skinnier middle section with a recessed body line, and *slight* flaring at the wheel arches.

From this spy shot specifically, it was already evident to me it's going to have a very heavy-looking middle section.
The body gets "skinnier" and recessed under that body line at the bottom of the doors, which contributes to making that middle section look really bloated.

I don't like the proportions. The rear overhang looks short. w214 is more sculptural. but this will be the winner in the cabin...
Wait, wait. Are you seriously telling us you prefer the MB better than the BMW?

Middle section heights are getting taller and taller in the German line ups. Can't blame BMW for that. I think the uptick will look sensational and 'out of this class" like but time will tell. Times are changing and traditional designs (esp. MB and Audi) are starting to look boring with all their juce squeezed out.

What do I mean with the kidney grille? Well, if you look at the shape in spy pics, which IMO is clearly vissible now, besides the inner shape, in which you can see the kidneys, the entire grille is one single piece now. The upper chrome part is now straight, from example and the kidneys are linked by a chrome piece as well. It's quite different from the F10 kidneys, or even the G30 5er, which had entirely separated kidneys (even though this new trend of linking them had started to show off with that black piece between both).
I think the kidneys look a little bit like those on the LCI 3-series,

I'll reserve my thoughts on the design till I see the final, full-flesh car. It seems to hide in some very interesting styling details, although the current pictures and the camouflage don't do it justice. It feels a little too heavy in the middle section, but we'll see.

Despite being classic in its approach and bearing the regular Merc styling albeit slightly altered, the W214 E-Class seems to herald the advent of a rather tough competitor for the 5er, at least in the exterior design department. It's not that I like the E-Class, but now for first time in history, it's not totally indifferent to me.

F Gen 5er is my personal favourite modern 5er. A sensational car with so much sense of occasion and opulence.
I believe that the quality of BMWs began improving and surpassing the competition with the F10....the F10 5er still looks modern and hasnt aged. It took the G30 LCI to beat it IMO.

Will BMW get this generation right from the onset will have to see.

First time we can see the full shape of the headlights.

Fortunately, they don’t touch the grille.

Still looks like there are fake panels attached to the bumper around the lights and grill, you can see the small fasteners still on the fake panel near the lights.
