3 Series (G20) [Renders] BMW 3 Series (G20) Rendered

The BMW G20 is the seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series range. Body styles: G20 (sedan), G21 (wagon/touring), G28 BEV (i3), and G28 (long-wheelbase). Predecessor: F30 3 Series. Successor: G50 3 Series. Production: October 2018-2016.
Material mix is far from finished in mules of that stage. Especially the new infotainment controller area will be very classy. A differentiating factor for the interiors across the range will be symmetry (8 series: symmetrical; X5/7/3-series etc.: dissymmetrical) and details. However, it's true: the justified criticisms about the current 3 series interior strengthened the wish to bring it closer to up-scale models.

Yes I have seen a finished interior which had the matte fine line wood contrasted by the leather dash surfaces, premium acrylic surface panels, milled detailing of the iDrive controller and aluminium detailing and pearl chrome inserts. It was of a higher status than what was found in today's F30.

Ideas evolving.
One other thing they are evolving is the Hoffmeister kick. On some models you are going to see the kick actually imprinted in the C-Pillar metal work. Especially cut out of the body work.
Just as we see the evolving character of L shaped rear light units now being conventionally shaped except for a prominent LED L detail.
And the ever evolving "Squircles" for the front headlights.

Actually, the only justifiable criticisms which can be leveled at the F30's interior are:
- the quality and fit of the centre console trim surround of the audio and HVAC modules
- the transmission tunnel console cardboard masquerading as plastic
For the rest of it - and as many journalists are now finally recognising - the F30 interior is far from being as flimsy as what the Internet pundits have led the world to believe.
Our roads are shocking down here and even on 19 inchers, I'm surprised at the lack of rattles and creaks - even with a sunroof.
As good as E46? No, but then not much has been in this class since.
The new B9 is very impressive but the W205? Over-hyped.
Of course, it is with dismay that I see BMW once again aping Mercedes with another Cheapening by ditching the ergonomically superior rotary dials for the temperature controllers.

I must say I am feeling a tinge of disappointment looking at these mules interiors. There appears to be too much black plastic on the center console for my liking, the new flat black plastic selection panel for the infotainment near the I drive wheel scroller looks really cheap, it looks like BMW are reducing the button count by changing classy looking individual squared off buttons into a flat large plastic panel doesn't look good at all.

The current F30 I drive controller and selector buttons looks more classy.

With regards to the buttons for HVAC and radio also are flat black plastic that could be coming out of a Hyundai or Kia. This is a BMW and should have something to make it look more special so more expensive looking metallic look switches would look great.

The new I drive screen position on the center console looks much lower than the current models, it is the same height as the instrument panel whereas current models it's higher.

You raise very good points. While I am glad to see bmw finally introducing a new center console design, I am beginning to ponder whether it's an improvement(functionally and ergonomically).

While the centre console in the G30, perhaps unimaginatively, carries forwards the principles of the one in the F10, F30 and even F25, you can't criticize its functionality. Dials for temperature, individual fan speed controls for driver and passanger, individual directional controls for driver and passenger. Lastly but not least there is a legible horizontal display to show you whats going on. This is incredibly luxurious! It almost makes me want a G31 instead of waiting for the G21.

Understandably the entire HVAC unit had to be shrunk and redesigned so that bmw could lower the iDrive screen to improve reachability and bring it to the same eye level as the instrument cluster.

It becomes obvious that the elevated rear wheelarch crest in combination with the interplay of concave/convex surfacing works effectively in diminishing "vertical mass" and thus facilitating a svelte visual image on large cars such as the Vision Future Luxury Concept. A task more difficult when applied to smaller executive-class cars such as the upcoming 3-series successor. A matter of a smaller, far more limited canvas to exploit.

I agree... This does not look good

^
Nevertheless it looks better in the 5-series...

Also, I wonder why they moved the location of the start button to where Audi places it...

I wonder why the changed the configuration of the steering wheel buttons... That would be annoying for owners coming from the current model.

They're even different from that of the current 5-series..

Yeah, right? Look at that $hitty fit & finish ... those gaps!!! :eek:o_O:rolleyes::wideyed::hungover::bored::yuck::dead::facepalm::blackeye::wacky:

/sarcasm off

And btw, any plastic on a zoomed photo which was taken upclose & with a flash looks like $hit: with all the visible dust, scratches, fingerprints and other smudges & dirt. Not to mention the glossiness due to flash reflection.

I'm talking about the buttons...It looks better in the 5-series, where there are actual physical buttons

Regardless of dust or smudges on that spy photo, the new center console, shift selector area or steering wheel buttons layout are just not a great gooding design, sorry BMW, this required immediate LCI. Upon first seen, this design flow is not coherent, triangle-like "Auto H" button, really! If someone posted this spy photo in other forum section, people may have recognized it as another brand, definitely not from BMW.

^Some details are pretty spot on, indeed (e.g., headlights, shadowline).
Overall appearance is not, in particular c-pillar/trunk area in front view seems flawed. Much better stance in reality.

What a mess. There is a crease on the rear flank but it doesn't extend through the door handles. Neither is the white strip on the tail lights sandwiched by red 3D strip at the top. The front looks a bit off too.

Bimmerpost did a render a few weeks ago that seemed perfect. Not sure if we posted it here.

This is what it will look like when it reaches production.

The new shifter is nice, but I would have used the empty space on top of it for putting a styling 3 Series logo or the BMW roundel. It would have been better, as in its actual form is looks way too simple even compared to the first generation of electronic gear shifters that debuted on the E70 X5 (that were something WOW). Not to mention the current, outgoing models from the 7er, 5er, X3 and X4.
