AMuS is reporting that the next TT is approved. Even though it is a niche model it is profitable because it can ride on an inexpensive platform and helps draw young customers to the brand. This is the opposite of the next gen R8 which is complicated to build and not as profitable as the TT.

I'm not in favor of that if it means the TT will go up in price. Now it's one of very few affordable coupes with the striking looks of a supercar.

Audi TT is a Golf GTI in wolf's clothing. Cheap to produce, cheap to own and bringing huge margins. It is the best marketing effort from AUDI for the last 20 years. If only the segment was not collapsing.

Exactly. The sales of the TT have been slow (due to the economic situation and the changing customer/market) even though the margin on the car is good.

Interesting the next R8 is also on doubt.

Audi is going to end as the Sedan + SUV brand of VAG. With Lambo and Porsche under its hood, no need for additional sportscars.

Der TT verkauft sich als Coupé unter Soll und als Roadster einfach nur schlecht.
Möglicherweise zieht Audi die Notbremse und kippt den Nachfolger.
Wahrscheinlicher ist allerdings, dass man dem Zweisitzer für den letzten Lebenszyklus nochmal einen neuen Hut spendiert, ehe dann 2026 endgültig die Lichter ausgehen.
Warum Audi und Porsche in diesem Segment nicht gemeinsame Sache machen?
Weil auch der 718 alles andere ist als eine Gelddruckmaschine.

According to rumours the third generation Audi TT has been signed off as s four door coupe.

I am utterly disappointed that the iconic TT name is going to be diluted. To even make the rear seats in a small four door coupe useable, the body shape needs to be bulked up.

Amongst the A5 Sportbsck, A3 sedan and A3 hatchback a four door TT will be less successful than a two door.

Understandably roadster sales are in the toilet to the point that BMW are collaborating with Toyota in order to make the Z4 viable.

Autobild reports that the new TT will become a Avant sportcoupe with 4 doors and almost in size to A4, 3 series, and C class but around €10,000 cheaper. Perfect to steal customers from 2 series GC and C sedan/CLA. It will ride on a LWB version of MQB (Tiguan) and debut in 2021 replacing both A5 Coupé and A3 Sportback.

Yet audi denies any rumours of the TT becoming a 4 door sedan/coupe. If the A7 and A5 sportbacks sell well enough, guess audi feels this will sell as well.

Merc is doing fine with CLA, C coupe, E coupe, S Coupe, CLS, SLK, SL

BMW currently has 2,4, 4GC, 6, 6GC, 8 and upcoming 8GC

Audi has the TT A5, A5 sportback and A7. I think they could introduce a new coupeish model without A) axing the A5, and B) ruining the TT name.

Where is the 2- door A7? That would eat up sales of the E coupe and 6. Where is the followup to the prologue. A true rival to the 8 and S coupe? VAG has nothing in this segment. Porsches are a different league, bentley goes against RRs, maybach's. Audi is the brand to compete with BM and Merc, so no point saying the bentley Conti could go against the big coupes.

They have all the tech,all the platforms, all underpinnings, the interiors. They'd just need to design bodies for these cars. There is a market, and they just give up market share. Just like they do with RS models in the US.

I would say that the TT's current position has become questionable due to the massive leap in performance for the hot hatch market where the performance gap has become almost negligible. Audi itself has the S3, the RS3, the Q3 RS (I have no idea if Audi is planning for a new RS for the new one, though) that are in the same range, and all of them have the practicality that the TT lacks, so having a competition from within the company is hard enough, and the style card alone doesn't seem to cut it.

Autobild's report above is a bit strange to me, if it holds water. I'm not quite knowledgeable about Audi, but the A5 nameplate is stronger than the TT at the current moment, as the latter is a class below even if it's considered iconic for the company, and it's possible to change the next A3 sportback to be with the A5 and A7 family instead of the current hatchback / wagon design.

Maybe it's better for Audi to keep the TT as a niche model while raising the performance envelope considerably to fill the gap of the original R8 V8, especially if the rumor of that car being discontinued after the current generation has any truth to it.

Small EV based performance cars will be a challenge because of the small floor surface area. They will have to stuff batteries into the rear or front which screws the balance or wait for solid state batteries.
