A1/S1 [Renders] 2018 Audi A1 (gen II)

The Audi A1 is a luxury supermini car launched by Audi at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Sales of the initial three-door A1 model started in Germany in August 2010, with the United Kingdom following in November 2010.
We have shown you guys quite a lot of Audi A1 renderings in the past couple of years. But the good news is that a prototype has emerged for Arctic testing, so accuracy is going to be on our side.

This latest attempt at recreating the posh supermini comes from RM design. At first glance, it seems hamfisted. However, after comparing it to our own carparazzi footage, we're beginning to think he might be on to something.

From the front, the A1 really will have the same sort of grille design made famous by the Prologue and later adopted by the A5 Coupe. The shape of the side air intakes is also the correct one.

Stronger shoulder lines define this set of images, leading us to imagine that the new Ibiza somehow formed the basis. But, in typical Sportback fashion, the A1 needs to have thick rear buttresses, horrible for visibility but immediately recognizable as Audi traits.

Around the back, the A1 looks like it's trying to give birth to an A3 trunk, much like the BMW i3 is pushing out a 911. But that's not a mistake on the part of the designer, as there really is supposed to be a character line there, maybe not one that's this defined, though.

While continuing to push into the MINI's market, Audi will drop the 3-door body style completely, leaving only the practical 5-door. Though we can't confirm this yet, it's likely that the A1 will be based on the MQB A0 platform, especially since production is being moved from Belgium to the SEAT factory in Spain.

The engine every journalist will say you should buy is going to be the 1.5 TFSI. However, the German buyers who do a lot of miles will be much happier if the 2.0 TDI makes a comeback.

Since the MQB A0 is designed to take more advanced forms of suspension, we wouldn't be surprised to see an S1 or even an RS1 as early as 2019.

The A1 is such an overpriced car. It's tiny inside to the point that my arms rub on the doors whether I am sitting in the front or the back.

Every German premium car is highly overpriced, I fail to see a point here.
And no kidding it's tiny on the inside, because it's tiny on the outside too.

Problem is this is a VAG car, meaning there will be a VW for less money which might be even nicer to look at.

Which is what happens with the current A4 and the A3 IMO, VW cousins are nicer and way cheaper.

Not to mention the Octavia and the Superb, which are also better looking (although A4 is a car that has almost nothing in common with the other VW products)

This is how I rate them:

Polo > Fabia > Ibiza > A1
Golf > Octavia > A3 > Ibiza
Superb > A4 > Passat

I get the point you’re making regarding the A1 and A3 but the A4 isn’t related to the Superb or Passat, it’s a completely different chassis. Also the A1 and A3 have much better interiors than the cheaper stablemates.

I’m waiting to see what the price for the Polo GTI is before I replace my A1. The new Polo is much bigger than the last one, I’d say it now close to Golf 5/6 size.

Yes. Audi designs are more design led. Switch gear and steering wheels are very nice to look at. However the interior quality of the Polo and VW are very good and on par with some Merc, Bimmers and Audis.

I'm eager to see how the new A1 and A3 will further distance themselves from the cousins.

The current A1 debuted in 2010 and sadly was never offered in the United States. We’re afraid there’s also little chance we’ll see the redesigned model as Audi has ruled out launching anything smaller than the A3 in these parts. (That’s why we also miss out on the Q2 SUV.)

Compared to the current A1, the redesigned model skips the bubble shape in favor of a more conventional hatchback design. The wheelbase has also been stretched in order to up space in the cabin.

The vehicle will be twinned under the skin with a redesigned Volkswagen Polo, which is also not destined for sale in the U.S. Underpinning both is the smallest version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, found in the Audi A3, the Volkswagen Golf, and a handful of other models form the German automaker.

This prototype is for a 5-door A1. It's thought that Audi will no longer off a 3-door option due to low demand.

Inside will be the latest tech including, as an option, Audi’s 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Powertrains will include 3- and 4-cylinder units, with the most potent version being an S1 possibly eclipsing the 231 horsepower of the current S1. An even more potent RS 1 from Audi Sport is possible given the performance division’s desire to expand its offerings. In the transmission department, buyers should be able to choose from 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch units.

We’re also likely to see an electrified model, possibly even a pure electric offering rivaling the BMW i3 and Smart ForTwo Electric Drive. Recall, the VW Group is planning the launch of 30 electric cars by 2025 and many of these are expected to come from Audi.

Look for a debut of the new A1 in late 2018 or early 2019.

VAG have done a phenomenal job differentiating the Fabia, Ibiza and Polo. All three are utterly fantastic and the latter has made me optimistic that the second generation A1 will be a genuinely good car.

While the outgoing model is beautiful in the right spec it's small, expensive and doesn't have strong USPs.

Trotzdem will das Modell insgesamt sportlicher erscheinen.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
