SL 55 S 4 MATIC + ??? The f??
this model and combo of SL53 and SL53e seems odd in my opinion. What will be the difference in engine spec between an SL53 and SL55S? It sounds like too many engine choices which I dont think will happen.

Maybe SL43 (mild hybrid - 270kw+16kw), SL53 (mild hybrid - 320kw+16kw), SL53e (plug in hybrid + E-motors - 400kw), SL63 (mild hybrid - 450kw+22kw) and SL73e (plug in hybrid + E-motors- 600kw)?

I’m pretty sure those are prototype variants that they are testing rather than the official lineup. They wouldn’t saturate the AMG lineup too much, especially considering half of these engines probably won’t be hand built.

New SL is coming, but SLK/SLC is really finished. A shame when their partners have Alpine A110 and new Nissan Z is (was?) on its way.

2022 Mercedes SL rendering previews the long due model revamp

Expect to see more of this as the year progresses.
The Mercedes SL is eight years old. The grand tourer from Stuttgart was introduced in 1954 and the sixth-generation R231 model isn't long for this world. Mercedes-Benz is about to replace the model with a full revamp, even though the model isn't really doing well in terms of sales for the German marque.

Last year, we've seen a weird shortened E-Class prototype but earlier this year, a production-spec prototype has been spotted by our spies, albeit, it's all covered up as you would expect in this early stage of development.

Of course, renderings of the two-seat grand tourer are in order, and Future Cars Now on Instagram would be the first to start the machine.

The rendering, which you could see on top of this page, takes a lot of cues from the spied prototype, which include the soft top that apparently the SL is reverting to. Rumours also suggest that the all-new SL will also get a 2+2 cabin, which would more likely be a really cramped rear cabin if the rumours were to be true. But then again, the SL will be exclusively available as a roadster, which should give its occupants infinite headroom at will.

As for the powertrain, AMG boss Tobias Moers said the next SL will be far sportier than the outgoing model. Previous reports support that claim, as it has been rumoured that the SL will get a range-topping hybrid model that will produce a combined output of 800 bhp (597 kilowatts).

The all-new Mercedes SL might debut next year as a 2022 model year, so expect more prototype sightings and renderings to come out as the year progresses.

Mercedes 300SL Reimagined As Retro Reboot On AMG GT Platform

Reimagining a classic icon with modern performance.

Reimaging an iconic vehicle in a more modern design is a risky proposition, to say the least. The art of nostalgia-fueled product design is nothing new, but the stakes are high as nostalgia leverages a great deal of brand equity. In the past, many automakers have attempted to call upon their past success to prop up current sales and some have done better than others. Today we see a fan-rendered modern interpretation of the iconic Mercedes 300SL, which begs the question, are we ready for a 300SL remake?

The 300SL is considered by many to be the world’s first supercar introducing race car performance in a liveable package. Defined by its iconic gull-wing doors, the 300SL came in coupe and then roadster form which debuted in 1956. These gorgeous coupes were the pinnacle of 1950’s design and remain icons to this day. So what does a modernized 300SL Roadster look like?

Well, wb.artist20 on Instagram started out with a contemporary AMG Roadster and got to work adding in the classic design cues from the 300SL. The headlight on the AMG GT was completely redone to match the shape of the 300SL however they clearly retain the LED composition of a modern headlight. The reshaped grille emulates the 300SL while retaining the lower air-intakes required to feed a modern engine.

Finally, we see the 300SL’s side vents reimagined in a modernized honeycomb pattern. To accommodate the side vent on the render extends to the door, which I’m sure is quite difficult to retain is this was ever built by Mercedes. There’s also subtle incorporation of the 300SL’s unique fender treatment which helps round out the new design.

Remakes of classic cars in a modern age can be quite difficult. Modern cars contend with stricter regulations and customer requirements that were not a factor during the building of iconic classics. Would you prefer a modern interpretation of a 300SL roadster over the current AMG GT Roadster?

That render is a terrible update of adding vertical lights on an AMG GT roadster

Years if we do not count the last one where it appears stored in a garage, which makes me think that they are not making much progress with it in terms of priorities, I hope I am wrong but with time left over from the life cycle of the S Coupe-cabrio still for sale, added to the pandemic, gives me the impression that this will go on for a long time

Maybe Geneva 2021 we could see it? Not sure. That is if this situation has subsided by then.

Next Mercedes-Benz SL will return to sporting roots
The upcoming SL will look to draw inspiration from its legendary predecessor

Mk7 SL will take cues from 1954 original without going retro

by Lawrence Allan -- Autocar

The next Mercedes-Benz SL, which is due to be revealed next year, will hark back to the original model of the 1950s more than any generation that followed, according to Daimler’s chief design officer.

Speaking to Autocar, Gorden Wagener admitted that he’s “not a fan of retro designs”, so the new SL won’t wholly revive the two-seat, gullwing look of the formative car. However, he said that the SL is moving away from the GT-style roadster ethos of the past few decades, returning to its sporting roots. To this end, AMG is heavily involved in its development.

“For me, the most beautiful SL is the original, the 300,” said Wagener. “And I think we’ve taken some of that DNA, starting with the proportions, the surface treatment, things like that. In that respect, the new SL is probably the closest to the first one ever.”

Our best sighting yet of the new Porsche 911 Cabriolet rival has been of a prototype with a cover half-removed at a research and development facility in Germany. This spy shot (below) shows that the car retains its classic long bonnet and cab-back profile but uses a fabric convertible roof instead of the current SL’s folding metal item.

Its platform will be adapted by AMG for the next AMG GT but, when asked if there will be any crossover between the two, Wagener said: “The GT is more of a race car and the SL is more of a sports car. You will clearly see the differences.”

Wagener also discussed the next S-Class, which will be shown towards the end of 2020. He described the model as a “milestone in design” and a “digital S-Class of the next decade” but admitted it will evolve Mercedes’ existing design language rather than lead it into a new era.

He said: “Back in the old days, the S-Class invented a new kind of style every time for the rest of the brand. But that was back when we only had three models, and it’s impossible to do now. There are still a lot of people who love the S-Class how it is, so that’s probably the last car we would want to change [radically].”

Wagener said the most “progressive aspect” will be the interior, where his team has put “even more emphasis on the digital side”. Spy shots show prototypes have a Tesla-style portrait touchscreen dominating the dashboard.

The Mercedes-Maybach version will continue to serve the ultra-luxury segment, too, but Wagener said its focus is on “traditional luxury values: craftsmanship, materials and so on” rather than just tech.

The Maybach won’t be the only different version of the S-Class: an all-electric EQS model is due in 2022 to sit at the top of Mercedes’ EQ range, above the EQE, an E-Class-equivalent saloon. The EQS will look “radically different from normal S-Classes”, according to Wagener, and will target “a lot of different customers”.

“Our Vision concepts have always been 80-90% close to the production car,” he said. “So that will have completely different proportions. It’s a very innovative vehicle.”

Some of that he's talking out his neck. The S_Class should focus on "traditional luxury values: craftsmanship, materials and so on" ++++ technology whether it be a S450 or a S650 Maybach. I don't get why he would say that the Maybach is going to focus more on this when it's the same car, unless he's say the Maybach is getting a different interior? Also if you're going radical with the EQS then the S-Class should have been less of a change IMO. Anyway I can't wait to see it all.
