Sonata [Renders] 2020 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

A 2020 Hyundai Sonata Baked With Le Fil Rouge Flair Would Be A Compelling Choice

sleek YF generation burst onto the scene in 2010. But frustratingly, the 2014 redesign tamed back the looks, with only a recent facelift adding some visual interest.

Fortunately, the South Korean automaker looks to be spicing up its design language – as evident with the stunning Le Fil Rouge concept showcased at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Now, what if the Le Fil Rouge transformed into Hyundai’s eighth-generation Sonata, what could it look like? Let’s take an illustrative crystal ball-gaze.

Sensuous Sportiness Design DNA

So what on earth is Sensuous Sportiness? Luckily for us, it’s actually Hyundai’s catchphrase for their new styling DNA which will be infused into the brand’s future vehicle lineup. Weird naming aside, this means the next Sonata will embody youthful sheet metal attire with an emphasis on proportions, dash-to-axle ratio and short overhangs.

Frontal styling for this study is an aggressive evolution of the current car, with a Ferrari-like grille leaning forwards like a Shark ready to pounce. Whilst the Le Fil Rouge had an awkward character line along the side, this has been toned down with a much more elegant crease. Another aspect of the concept that needed resolving is the curved glasshouse – whilst looking nice, it didn’t quite gel with other angular design elements throughout the bodywork.

On the Inside

Step inside the 2018 Sonata and you’ll be treated to a dated and unspectacular atmosphere. Luckily this promises to change for the better, with attention-grabbing styling incorporating swathes of natural wood, contrasting premium materials and an air of open spaciousness.

Like current Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the cockpit will be dominated by large digital displays. Except in the Sonata, these displays will expand the full-width of the dashboard – allowing for a much more immersive occupant experience in terms of infotainment and connectivity access.

Look for an enhanced version of Hyundai’s current 2.0-litre turbocharged four, paired to an 8-speed automatic powering the front wheels or via an optional AWD system. Whilst currently good for 245-hp, expect those figures to climb in the Sonata’s next iteration to keep competitive with the competition.

The eco-conscious can look forward to upgrades of the 2.0-litre Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)variants. Developing north of 210 combined powertrain horsepower, both units would have increased range and ideally use new solid-state battery technology to aid charging times for the plug-in model.

A Competitive, But Shrinking Segment

Arguably the biggest hindrance to any mid-size sedan entrant is stiff competition and sheer market lure that the SUV segment now holds. People just aren’t buying mid-sizers like they used to and conjecture has it that Ford may not do a next-generation Fusion – so why should Hyundai do another Sonata?

The answer is in appeal – the product needs to be desirable, yet practical. Whilst new Camry, Accordand Mazda6 have brought some visual appeal to the game, they don’t go far enough. Hyundai needs to think radical and arguably, the Le Fil Rouge concept is a good place to start.

Hyundai is close to finalizing a redesigned Sonata with styling inspired by the handsome Le Fil Rouge concept car (shown below) unveiled in March at the Geneva auto show.

A prototype for the new mid-size sedan has been spotted at the Nürburgring and looks to be wearing its final skin. A few details are missing however, such as the production taillights and side skirts.

Elements borrowed from the concept include the fastback roof leading to a large duck-tail spoiler. The sculpting on some of the panels as well as the short overhangs and multi-slatted grille are also reminiscent of the concept, albeit in toned-down form.

Hyundai describes the look as “sensuous sportiness.”

t isn't clear what Hyundai plans for the mechanical setup. The current Sonata is offered with a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 and a 2.4-liter inline-4, as well as a plug-in hybrid option. Most of these options should carry over though we could see the 1.6-liter turbo dropped. Drive should be to the front wheels.

The redesigned Sonata is expected on sale in the fall of 2019 as a 2020 model. It means we should see the debut in the first half 2019. In other markets it might continue with the i40 name the current Sonata uses.

Key rivals for the Sonata like the Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry have all been updated or redesigned in the recent past, and with sales of mainstream sedans on the decline, competition in this segment will be tougher than ever.

We barely got used to the Sonata facelift's looks, and now a brand new generation is on its way. How soon should we expect it? Production will start on the 15th of March 2019, and the Korean market unveiling will happen somewhere around that time.

This particular prototype features gold paint reminiscent of the VW Arteon, black wheels and the body cladding of an N-Line package. That's just for show, but according to Auto Post Korea, a Sonata N has already been approved for development.

Hyundai's blossoming N division already has two models, the i30 N hot hatch and its more American-oriented cousin, the Veloster N. Both use the same 2-liter turbo engine, and it's being reported that so will the Sonata N. This will result in two flavors of hot sedan with 250 and 275 HP.

That's not exactly mind-blowing, considering what a real sports sedan delivers. However, the Sonata N only competes with turbo versions of the Arteon or Honda Accord.

Still, we find it unusual that the powertrain will be quite close to a Kia GT model, the Optima GT. That's why we give credit to another rumor which states the new Theta-3 2.5-liter turbo will offer nearer to 300 ponies. Near-premium cars with manual gearboxes don't work, so the Sonata N should pack an 8-speed auto or even the twin-clutch unit that's supposedly under development for the Veloster and i30.

N version? Why not. The i30N has demonstrated that Huyndai is capable of developing credible and fun to drive cars.

The launch of the next-gen Sonata will be earlier than expected. The new Hyundai Sonata, which is about to be launched at New York Auto Show on April, is the eighth generation and maintains its position as a medium-sized sedan from the South Korean carmaker and today we have the first pictures of the front bumper & two different grilles.

Is the new Sonata a big Avante? The existing Avante has been rated as completely new design. It was designed with the idea to be liked by everyone, young and old, and the former high-performance model, the Avante Sport, was popular very with its sporty design. Despite this was a partial change, creates a lot of controversy for people dislike this new design, specially in the case of the Sport version. This has made consumers more sensitive to what they expect on the new Sonata
However, the new Sonata seems to be nicer & sportier than its predecessor and looks like it follow many design cues from the Le Fil Rouge, a concept car model showed by Hyundai at Geneva Motor Show, and which has received good receivement.

If you take a look to the pictures, the new Sonata will have a larger grille and side air curtain and a chromed stripe will came edge to edge, like on the Sportage facelift. There will be at least two different grilles, that have space for front cameras, so we can guess it will have a 360 degrees camera system, and have different looks (a more elegant with chromed horizontal bars and the sporty one with black painted three dimensional pattern.

Damn this will look interesting...in a good way.....I think. Looks like they are getting a discount from Honda Civic's taillight supplier though. ;)

Exclusive 2020 Hyundai Sonata Interior Shots

hyundai-sonata-spied-inside-2.webp

hyundai-sonata-spied-inside-1.webp

We already have seen a lot of spy pictures and information about next-gen 2020 Hyundai Sonata, the 8th gen, and even the confirmation for NY AutoShow launch, but today we have a new set of completely undisguised pictures from the interior and a possible dashcam.
The picture that tops this post shows a floating type touchscreen system for the infotainment system, and I think (and hope) this is a base model due to the small size of the screen. Probably top of the range variants could have the new 10,25 inch screen, this one looks like 7 inch.

You used to think the Koreans were leaders in design originality. But now we have a pastiche of Audi(Grille) Fiat(Grille on how the headlights sit in the Grille. Or Honda(Rear lights) & BMW(interior).
