It’s going to be a looker, espically the GLE43, but the new is extremely strong effort, especially interior wise. The next GLE Coupe needs to take it up several notches to combat the X6 and Q8.

I was actually pretty optimistic prior to the current gen's debut and was summarily disappointed, particularly with the interior. Even after its facelift, they didn't really address many of the car's shortcomings.

That said I think there's good reason to be optimistic for the upcoming GLE. With the previous M/GLE, either Daimler were still Chrysler or, as with the previous M/GLE, they had recently exited that failed relationship. I think more resources will be devoted to a product, particularly the interior, because considering how crossovers and SUV still have high-demand in this marketplace, this ought to be a cash-cow. I think they would be downright stupid to bungle this up.

Oh I like what I’m seeing so far. Looks quiet squarish/boxy from the front (how an SUV should be!).

I agree. Saloons which are Mercedes fort, are being cannibalised by SUVs.

My fears of the car looks too soft have been squashed. The sleek horizontal taillights and slim rear windshield will produce squat but sophisticated rear stance.

Typical ML. Not bad bad hardly great. Rear looks much better than the front, which suffers from grille that simply is too small for such a big car. Percentage wise the grille on a C class is much bigger.

I think it's on the cute-ish soccer mom side.

I don't see the cuteness in it. There is a lot more attitude than in the outgoing GLE. The tapered nose and higher ground clearance result reduces bulk nicely. Plenty more of the new GLE is coming but from what's I've seen the visual improvement is pretty big.

All these SUVs...X5, GLE, XC90, Q7, RX, etc, etc are all cutesy soccer-mobiles driven by Lululemon yoga-pants clad moms. Heck, even the butch G-wagen and the sophisticated Range Rover are the soccer-moms' SUVs of choice for the affluent.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against yoga-pant clad moms, many of whom are lovely, lovely people.

These comments are funny. As we see the conventional three box sedan market continue to dwindle, it's still the soccer moms that get all of the credit (blame?) for driving the market in such a fashion. Male drivers aren't increasingly driving crossovers in place of sedans, no way.

Soccer-dads are also responsible (complicit?) as well and with the increasing number of crossovers/SUVs. Heck, I was just advising my brother on what he should get for hauling his kids and all their gear (coincidentally, both of whom are kick-ass soccer players). I was met with groans of lament of his loss youth while I provided words of sympathy. Now, while I don't have an international perspective on the demographics for these vehicles, anedecotally I see many moms driving them in the US. A few years ago, one of the reasons for choosing an SUV that I heard ad nauseaum was for safety in that since it was a larger vehicle, they feel if an accident were to occur, they feel they would have a higher chance of coming out less scathed compared to a sedan. While the reason is debatable (i.e. higher chance for roll-overs), if that's how they feel I can't neither sway them nor would I want to sway them. I just felt like making a broad brush-stroke for comedic effect. Also so I could profess my affection for fit moms in stretchy yoga-pants; that's just icing on the cake.

I quite like it so far. I'd take it over the X5 no doubt. The 53 and 63 will both look amazing. Hope the GLE53 will get the same rims as its E53 siblings. Now that would look splendid!
No "drift mode" for the SAVs? :hungry:

Men absolutely drive SUVs but also take greater interest in sedans, shooting brakes and estates.

Out of the first time mothers at my work or near where I live, not a single one has bought an estate. It's shocking but there are legitimate reasons why "soccer moms" love SUVs and they are:

  • When pregnant, your obliques and abs weaken. Entry and exit out of cars like the Q3, GLC and Q5 is effort less.
  • Tall doors makes it easy to lift/strap kids doesn't require awkward bending down.
  • Spotting vacant parking bays from afar is easier in a car with high seating position.
  • If the car has a flat load lip the boot can be used like a changing table.
  • AWD and high ground clearance allow mounting of curbs and parking on grass mounds - even in the wet.

All very sensible and realistic reasons really. Moreover, some of these reasons don't just apply to women. I know a number of men who, due to age and other medically-related factors, much prefer the ease of access afforded by an SUV and are more than willing to put up with the dynamic compromises over a lower sedan or wagon. Also, the added robustness and far better pothole resilience (on sensibly-profiled tyres) afforded by most SUVs make for a less stressful drive over damaged roads.
