CLS-Class (C218) [Renders] 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS (gen 3)

The C218 Mercedes-Benz CLS is the second generation of the Mercedes CLS-Class range of four-door coupé sedans. It is succeeded by the CLS (C257). Body styles: C218 (4-door coupé), X218 (5-door shooting brake). Production: January 2011 – December 2017
^ Here's a rumor about the new generation. :)

A new report indicates Mercedes-Benz will axe the Shooting Brake modification of the next generation CLS. Car says the German manufacturer will pull the plug on the stylish estate after only one generation. Mercedes has decided against the Shooting Brake following the lack of interest from North American and Chinese customers. The third generation of the CLS will be introduced in 2018, but no further details are available at the moment. CAR

Yup, a shame. This makes the 6er Shooting break highly unlikely as well.

Looking at the range I guess MB are going to make the GLE coupe the new CLS, its a pitty, I don't mind the CLS SB, even nicer when its got the AMG goodies attached.

The render is a caricature, but there are hints to a more angular interpretation of the current 'sensual purity'.
A bit sharper headlights would be most welcome. The current batch (A/B/C/GLC/S) are too bulbous and rounded.

Would be very stupid if they didn't as it would defeat the whole purpose of all these name changes throughout the line up.
And if they did it would open up the way to a true S class based 4 door coupe.

Time for a new CLS after only 3 years model, the CLS is still fresh in my eyes

The render is not from Larson so I will forget about it until, after summer, his version comes out. Which should be pretty close to the real deal.

16 is the 5th production (12,13,14,15,16) year for the current body style. By platform, the new one should follow the E-sedan by a year since it is built on that platform. 2018 would be a six year run, which is more than enough for such a fickle niche.

Looks like they used a A7 for the render of the profile.

Little doubt that the current CLS is too busy on the side panels with the big hip arches converging with overly done dropping lines, and then further lower accents running contrary to this angel.

I find the current CLS the most prettiest 4 door sedan/coupe in the market. The first generation was pretty but also weak at the front without the AMG bumper. The side hip line on the current model makes this car far more attractive than if it was not there. Just imagine a plain side panel in the back on otherwise such a dynamic shape.

My old vision CLS

Time is flying with the CLS, I still gawk when i see one in traffic or the parking lot,

The next CLS needs to be bold and standout from every other Mercedes, but look like a Mercedes like the original did. The interior needs more differentiation from the E also. It is time for Mercedes to take back the segment it invented.

You may be interested in learning that when the first gen CLS was conceived back in 2000, MB was so serious about distinguishing the CLS (=Jaguar fighter) from its traditional line up, that they were considering opening up a separate sub brand. They even investigated purchasing brand rights of defunct makers (e.g., Duesenberg, Jensen). But given major complications in securing branding rights globally, they ultimately decided to go with the Mercedes brand, the rest is history...

I don't know why Mercedes used to (or do they still) feel like their own brand can't support whatever they choose to make. It is in the top 5 (automotive) brands in the world and arguably only behind Bentley and Rolls in prestige when it comes to luxury cars. Anything with star on it (done right) will be accepted, and hell even the clunkers they made over the years were bought up by everyone. Mercedes-Benz will never need another brand name to sell their vehicles. They need to remember that. Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach is how it should be. All that is needed now is to switch the parent back to Daimler-Benz. Why get rid of Karl's contribution?

They wen't through some serious physiological issues when they were married to Chrysler. Thank GOD that is over. Chrysler and Schremp brought MB to it's knees and almost destroyed the company's independence.

I remember almost crying as a kid when the 'Merger' was announced in the late 90's.:D I knew no good would come of it.

I think the MB brand is so strong that a lot of people actually understand and acknowledge that their top end cars are technically superior to the Bentley and Rolls, and it is more an exercise in marketing that the Bentleys and Rolls are considered more 'prestigious'.
