http://www.autoevolution.com/news/2...d-for-no-reason-looks-too-serious-102822.html

The Volkswagen current generation of the Volkswagen Polo was heralded as a breakthrough in the subcompact segment when it was shown six years ago. It was bigger and more refined, no longer a major downgrade from the Golf. Fast forward to 2014 and the mid-life facelift came about.

Even though Volkswagen made exterior changes that nobody could spot, there were serious mods underneath the sheet metal. Virtually all the engines were brand new, including the ones that kept their displacement (like the 1.2 TSI). All the older diesels were replaced by a 1.4-liter TDI with three cylinders and available in three flavors (75, 90 and 105 HP).

Nevertheless, investments in the Polo have since stopped, despite this being one of the Top 10 best-selling cars in Europe. A lack of profitability that characterizes the subcompact segment is partially to blame, but we also suspect VW wants to save all its resources for the next generation, which by our calculations will arrive in 2018.

The segment seems to be moving towards ever bigger cars with wheelbases that stretch out for stability. The new Mazda2 is one such example, as its proportions are similar to the Golf 4.

To survive, the Polo will need to offer a larger trunk with up to 350 liters of space offered as standard. The spare wheel will be ditched on most models, but a longer overhang should also be employed.

This next rendering by Theophilus Chin shows what the next Polo could end up looking like. Development hasn't even started yet, but all the recent VW models have come out looking like this: sober and straight-laced. That's not really a problem for the Passat, but many subcompact car customers expect something cute and cuddly, which this is not.

Hopefully, within the next couple of years, VW will hire somebody who knows how to draw without a ruler.

They certainly have the technology for this type of car already. While most manufacturers only have one small turbo engine, Volkswagen has two, the 1.0 TSI, which is a 3-cylinder, and the 4-cylinder 1.2 TSI. We seriously doubt the market wants a small EV based on the Polo because it would just be too expensive. But they have the tech for that as well.

The only major area the Germans need to work on is the suspension department. Nearly all the VWs we've tested recently were decent enough at highway speed but became unnerved by bumps and lumps around town. Being one of the oldest models still in production, the Polo 6R suffers the most from this issue, as its archaic rear beam is just not smart enough.

2017 VW Polo speculatively rendered

The sixth-generation Volkswagen Polo is this week’s model selected by OmniAuto.itfor a speculative render.

The current Polo V supermini has been on sale since 2008, so naturally a replacement is being prepared by the folks from Wolfsburg. It will get brand new underpinnings as the 2017 Polo will eschew the PQ25 platform in favor of a shorter adaption of the flexible MQB architecture. This will bring a significant weight loss, even though the model will likely grow a little bit in size, as suggested by the attached render.

As you can see, OmniAuto.it has envisioned the 2017 Polo with a more refined design influenced by the latest Passat midsize sedan/wagon. The increased footprint makes the supermini appear more mature and at the same time it’s bound to become more comfortable and practical thanks to a roomier interior.

Being an MQB product, the new Polo will have access to an assortment of efficient turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engines. We also expect to see a plug-in hybrid version and obviously a spicy GTI that will arrive at a later date.

According to a report issued earlier this week by Wards Auto, the all-new VW Polo will go on sale in June 2017. It will continue to be assembled at the factory in Landaben, Spain where VW plans to invest $1.01 billion (€900 million) by 2018 to expand the facility. In addition, it seems representatives of workers at this plant are currently negotiating with VW to add an extra model to the assembly line. If the two parties will come to an agreement, the model in question could be a baby crossover previewed by the T-Cross Breeze concept. We are making this assumption based on the fact that VW has already confirmed a smaller crossover is on the way and it will share the same platform with the new Polo.

Taking into account the report states new Polo sales will begin in June 2017, we expect an official introduction to occur earlier that year at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

First spy shot and info to Polo.
- will come as an SUV
- more differentiation between design of Polo and Golf
- exemplary crash structure
- more profit oriented (no more Cross and Blue GT)
- high end options such as KESSY, Digital display, adaptive LED headlights, and adaptive suspension
- 3 cylinder hybrid with best in class dynamics, range and efficiency

Can't wait to see more, the current Polo is the best Polo ever made, and actually is the new Golf.

I wish the polo had a Golf like C-Pillar, I think it would suit this small car pretty well.

We have a Polo in the family and it is a pretty solid car with a very good value for the price it is sold. The proportions of this new one look really really good.

Not if you spend anytime in the back seat. Quite a bit smaller back there and the drivers enviroment is smaller.

It's pretty similar to an old Golf, and I have no problem sitting in the back seat from my house to Paris, which is 500 km. A new Golf is much roomier yes, no doubt.

That old Golf must be a pretty old Golf, Golf III/IV onwards are all more roomy than a Polo.

Then again you might be a midget, anything is roomy when you're under 150cm tall.

He's Dutch. I can assure you he's not a midget.

I'm in the market to replace my VW Up. It's over four years old now, and with my "middle car", the M135i, being replaced by an incoming M2 (which therefore moves my middle segment even closer to the R8), there is a big gap to fill in my everyday workhorse slot. The Up is fine as a city car but it's no good for long distance travel. I think the Polo BlueMotion would fill that bottom slot perfectly. Economical around the city. Fairly anonymous so can blend in and not attract too much attention. Perfectly capable of economical and comfortable long distance travel. 95hp 3-cylinder engine.

I'm taking my R8 for its annual service in a few weeks in Eindhoven, and next door is the VW dealership. I think I'll ring ahead and ask them to arrange a test drive of a Polo BlueMotion.

I would wait for this new car. The current Polo is quite old.

As an interesting note, I think the best parts of the 3 cyl Polos are the rock solid construction (the car just does not break) and the clever gearbox. Even the 60 PS one has enough power in short gears to push the car when needed, with several adults inside.

Not sure about the deals in your country. The prices in Spain are quite competitive with VW. I drive a Golf GTI and the price was a joke compared to the equivalent BMW or MB (12k less than a barely equiped A250, when the GTI has almost every extra).
