Still trying to make everything look like a 911.

f#ck that shit indeed. Looks like a 911 with Taycan front. So f'ing unimaginative.

Now...with some highly significant question marks regarding the near-to-mid term future of dedicated battery-electric drivetrains, I wonder whether Porsche will be developing an ICE range extender version of the upcoming Boxster/Cayman.

... the nonsense clickbait.

But is it, really ? It seems quite viable to me. Or at least it could be viable. Engineers are proficient in reducing size and weight opening interesting packaging concepts, efficiency of of RE units is enhanced due to not being required to drive the wheels or support a number of auxiliary functions. There should be the high degree of ingenuity available in help muffle the noise generated by the unit, hence not considerably sacrificing refinement. Of course, a most legitimate question will be whether consumers can embrace the concept. Maybe we will see in the not too distant future.

Consumers at least in Europe won't have much choice, Europe is going EV, that ship is not going to be turned around. If anything the EU should grow a pair and speed up the implementation of EV only.

But is it, really ?

Yes it is. The same as Taycans being fitted with engines. Stories made-up and amplified to generate clicks. Porsche aren't making decisions on the whim of YouTubers and car journalists. It takes years and years, not to mention billions of Euros to develop cars. You don't suddenly change your whole five to seven year plan because of small fluctuations in the market (and the electric car market isn't collapsing, unless, again, you believe YouTubers and clickbait car journalists). The future is overwhelmingly moving to electric. The only question is the timeline. Porsche adapt to the changing timeline by adjusting production. They don't adapt by changing a whole model line.

Well there is 25 years till the whole world is to be Carbon Net Zero and most countries are planning to phase out ICE vehicle from 2030 to 2040, so it will get harder for car manufacturers to not stick to their government requirements without been heavily fined.

Oh, I most certainly agree with you on this particular point. No argument from me.

Porsche adapt to the changing timeline by adjusting production. They don't adapt by changing a whole model line.

It is not my intention to insinuate that Porsche will "change" whole models lines, nor do I personally believe that they will.. I'm pondering the possibility of Porsche supplementing BEV model lines with, for example, REEV versions. See the new VAG brand Scout (but okay, were talking about body-on-frame constructions rather than unit body constructions) But I'm just guessing on all of this, after all.

Here is the spy shot of the test mule!

I see that "I wonder whether" was omitted from my original quote. Just saying.;)

Generally true but there are manufacturers that are changing to long range PHEVs such as Porsche and Lotus within 18-24 months.

Well, after my amazing spy shot, you don't have to wonder any more.

On a serious note, range extenders are a stupid idea. You are better off shoving a portable generator in the trunk cause you can at least take it out when you don't need it, which is most of the time for most of the people.

That headlines is like saying "Sunny backtracks on his plan to only sleep with supermodels...". Cute but immaterial. Sadly.

Thanks. I find this comforting.

As mentioned by another forum contributor, "timeline" is a significant consideration. And I wholeheartedly agree. As innovation relevant to BEVs presses forward, it is highly likely that range extention by way of very compact ICE and or miniature gas turbines will eventually become absolutely superfluous. But when that point in time will arrive...???

On a side note: For those who understand German (or have a translator app of some kind), I suggest taking a look at the electrive videos on youtube. Short videos presented daily with interesting news pertaining to BEVs and e-mobility in general. Simply news, no agendas-no BS. The one below is interesting as it pertains specifically to the subject matter being discussed here:

Timeline doesn't matter. Range extender is a stupid idea.
It is like if you carried a tiny pony around in the early cars for when you ran out of gas. It was a stupid idea then. It is a stupid idea now.

You wouldn't do this -

Why would you do this?

If BEV doesn't work for whatever reason, get a ICEV/hybrid.

Just my opinion.
