Porsche approach to hedging like BMW is correct. EV sportscar is a new territory. No one knows what the demand and resale values will be. Unlike four door EVs, the two seaters won't benefit from fleet demand.

Two things need to improve for EV sports cars to take off:

Consumer: Need to become more open minded.

Manufacturers: Need to price them reasonably and ensure that they offer a meainingful performance uplift compared with 4 seater EVs.

EVs have the same performance, regardless whether they are a two seater or a sedan. The weight difference is less than 5%, so how could they uplift the performance?

Im not sure being open minded has anything to do with EV adoption.

I guess it’s like digital watches vs mechanical ones. The former is superior is all ways possible but we value the latter like jewellery or status symbols.

My 16 year old daughter has been a huge EV proponent for the past 8 years or so. My sister in law was an early adopter and we’ve had a Model 3 for 6 years (which I bought because I had a crazy 110 mi daily commute and it just made financial sense - hands down).

Fast forward a month ago one of my best friends took her out in his 356 speedster and then his 911T and she was hooked. Completely. She gets it and she and I would agree with you. She doesn’t need to go fast to enjoy it, and she enjoyed it going fast. The word she used was visceral - involving all the senses.

How do you do that with an EV? Sight (the progression of a gauge instead of a number), sound (a means to measure status, progress, and celebrate), touch/vibration (its alive, can you feel a hum or high pitched whine or the snap of a spark), smell/taste (smell and taste of exhaust, fuel, oil, but there’s also the a smell of electricity/ozone) - all true and not artificially created. When we are presented with a performance EV these are lacking.

Have you ever been in the room when a tesla coil has been fired up, like at the Griffith Observatory in LA? It’s entirely visceral. You’re in the presence of something when that thing is fired up. It is hard to express. Performance EVs need a good dose of that. A very good dose - to stir the soul.

Makes me wonder about Harley trying to find it with the Livewire where you hear the electric scream. Or BMW’s “Heart of Joy” where they talk the talk but does it deliver? We’ll know in a year or two.

Whoever solves that well will win and show the way with performance EVs.

There are no Huyndai and Volvo EVs that cost more than a Cayenne. Plenty of room for Porsche to offer a larger and more expensive SUV.
