Helloooo there my fellow members,
Although this should have been done months earlier, but I sincerely apologize for this delay. I have been quite busy lately that I can't even scratch my head.
So , what do we have today, yeah the Panamera, one of the most controversial cars of recent days. So I ll divide this into 4 Parts: Styling, Interior and gadgets, Performance and User experience
Styling:
All right now, some might disagree (actually most not some
) that the Panamera is a looker, but in a different way or let's just say "in a Porsche way". The front, massive resemblance to the Carrera GT except it is less sloppy and the hood has creases. Side or Profile, might look weird to some, but I guess if you are a Porsche fan, then that rear might not surprise you as the Porsche way of doing rear ends. But, the Panamera really shines being surrounded by other "ordinary" cars. If feels different, unique and outstanding in some situation (with the right rims/ride height setting and rear wing engaged). Sorry I haven't had time to take more pics .. so here they are from the last shooting I did.
Interior and Gadgets:
Of course, once you get inside, you completely forgot how weird it looks from outside. The car is a head turner, I've seen people (specially women) doing a 180 nick spin
just to take a glance at the car. They might dislike it or even hate it, but it turned there head and that really can't get annoying some times.
Interior gadgets are of course on par with giant trio, but I must say, touch screen seem to work in the age of iDrive/MMI/CommandIII. It is just easy. Navigation, well compared to my last BMW, it is like a huge step forward. BMW system was really a failure compared to the Porsche. It is more intuitive, easy to learn, better options and well structured.
Ipod/Iphone connectivity couldn't get any better. But I really wanted an internal HDD to download my music on HDD for faster and permanent playback.
Burmester soundsystem, well what can I say, I am really spoiled now and I don't know if I can lower my standard for my next car: It is astonishing , a totally different experience from what I have experienced earlier, it soo fine, well engineered sound experience. You have millions of options to refine your music, "Live – Smooth – Surround .. etc" , Adaptive sound conditioner .. just a "wow"
Adaptive cruise control: Great but could be improved, if activated should have a louder "beep" sound if cars approach closer like MBs radar system. A feature I liked, is that if your car slows down due to a car in front slower, if you signal left, it will add some speed to ease the overtaking process.
The rest of things are just on par with other luxury cars, it might be better or worse in some cases. Example, rear view camera: better than BMW (X6) but on par with MB.
Seats are a little on the hard side and miss those million-way type of seats in BMWs , You can really tailor it to your perfect seating position, but that is not a big deal.
One small complain though: The light materials inside the car and front winsheild angle, really makes the front glass very annoyingly reflective and can destract the driver.
On the road:
Well, let me just say: Seductive and Addictive. This something worth pages of explanation and praise . The car , in the normal setting no sport/sport+ button pressed, feels comfortable or dare I say: lazy . Once you pick up speed, it feels torquey , easy to overtake, very soft on road humps , steering is light. Always starting in 2nd gear with the clutch being half engaged for smoother take offs. Gear to gear change is barely noticeable but needs sensitive throttle input at lower gears to avoid PDK jerkiness.
Press Sport mode, the ride height reduces few millimeters and the throttle response sharpens a little, this setting is my daily driver setting, comfortable enough, sporty and power on demand. Steering feels heavier now and the dear gap in the throttle almost reduces to none.
In Sport+ mode, the car is a total beast, lazer sharp throttle response, steering is sensitive with a great feedback from the road. Here the stability management system delays its interefernce with your driving style which is very fun and safe at the same time and I believe torque sent to the rear wheel is also increased. Entering round abouts at the 2nd gear always allow for a controlled 4wheel drift. Something that need more effort in other cars.
Acceleration is effortless . Part of me regret not getting the turbo model , but once you feel the instant power from this great 4.8 NA engine, that doubt or regret is vanished.
Here is a standstill acceleration video and another one on the move: (filmed 15 mints earlier just for you guys
)
Economy is greart for a sporty sedan, something is not evident in an M5 for example. It even recomends a gear change for an optimized fuel economy when normal driving mode is chosen. (Small arrow for an upshift in the small display)
User experience:
Rear leg room is better than a 5/E class but less than 7 series. Boot is not big compared to 5/7 E/S class but more accesseable due to the hatch.
Insulation and road noise is better than 7 series but not as quite as S class.
Its a keeper. This car really put a smile on my face each time I drive it. Something missing in some cars recently.
