2012 Porsche 911 - 14.9.2011

Porsche's Sales and Marketing boss has revealed the company hasn't ruled out a 911 plug-in hybrid.

Speaking to Automotive News, Bernhard Maier said Porsche has a "lot of ideas" for a 911 plug-in hybrid but none of them have been confirmed for production. He went on to say "The 918 Spyder shows that Porsche has the capability to produce very convincing hybrid sports cars."

While Maier wouldn't commit to making a 911 plug-in hybrid he said he is a true believer in the technology and people are beginning to understand the benefits that plug-in hybrids offer.

2016 Porsche 911 Carrera to have a 2.7-liter turbo with up to 407 PS
New details are starting to emerge about the turbocharged engines that will power the facelifted Porsche 911.

According to Motoring's sources, the entry-level model will use a turbocharged 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine that develops up to 407 PS (300 kW). Despite the improved performance, the engine will be more economical as it will reportedly consume less than 8L/100km (29.4 mpg US / 35.3 mpg UK).

The 911 Carrera S will also feature a turbocharged engine and it is expected to displace 3.4-liters. Specifications remain a mystery but it should produce more than 407 PS (300 kW).

The facelifted Porsche 911 is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, so expect to learn more in the coming months.

Porsche 911 Facelift Spied during Boxer Engine Duet

Porsche is almost ready to offer the facelifted 911 to the world and we couldn’t just sit and wait, so we’re brining you a spy video that shows two 911 prototypes in a glorious Boxer duet.

Zuffenhausen’s flat six soundtrack is enough music to our ears when coming from a single engine, but the duet makes us thankful for the existence of these superb six-cylinder mills. One of the singers (no pun intended) if a 911 Turbo.

Despite the fact that no major tech changes are expected for the Turbo when the revamp hits, the engineers are determined to extract every bit of performance available - they even crashed the 911 Turbo prototype during a Nurburgring run back in May.

Nonetheless, the 911 Turbo is expected to receive a major upgrade in 2017. Rumor has it Porsche is working on a hybridization plan, which will see the company transfer the petrol-electric knowledge gained with the 918 Spyder to the 911 and Panaera. To be more specific, the Germans are believed to be working on new range-topping versions of the two. With a little help from the electric motor friends, the two should climb to about 700 hp.

We’ll remind you Porsche is also working on a new family of turbocharged four-cylinder Boxers. As far as the 911 is concerned, two of these powerplants could land at its back. The first is a 2.0-liter unit delivering 286 hp (290 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, while the second is a 2.5-liter mill churning out 360 hp (365 PS) and 347 lb-ft (470 Nm) of torque.

At least one of these units will power the 911 and while they do come with their benefits, we’d like to enjoy our six-cylinder units while we can.

I love the changes to the front and the interior, but I those new, bigger, rearlights are a clear step backwards.

In the sum of all attributes, the 991 series Carrera 4S is my personal favorite when it comes to automobiles. The facelift + "turboization" is very unlikely to change my view.

I see we already have a 991.2 thread in the New Porsche Models (wrong section), so now it's a bit of a mess with two separate thread and multiple posts on the facelift in the official 911 thread :(

2016 Porsche 911 facelift spy photo / Automedia

Likely debuting in September at IAA
An undisguised prototype of the Porsche 911 facelift has been caught on camera undergoing final testing.

It was only yesterday when Porsche signaled the imminent demise of the 991.1 version with the Black Edition and now our spy photographers have caught on camera a 991.2 prototype camo-free. At a first glance it appears to be identical to the outgoing model but upon closer inspection you will notice the front and rear bumpers have received a minor cosmetic surgery.

In addition, there are new LED daytime running lights and different graphics for the headlight and taillight clusters. It seems the rear lighting clusters have been stretched and now adopt a wraparound layout while the dual exhaust tips are now closer to one another and mounted near the center of the rear bumper.

Likely debuting in September at Frankfurt Motor Show, the revised Porsche 911 range could be all-turbo, with the exception of the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS. It is believed the 911 Carrera will be equipped with a newly developed 2.5-liter 6-cylinder turbocharged engine while the Carrera S should have a larger 3.5-liter turbo engine with more than 407 PS (300 kW).

Looks fantastic. But this isn't a base 911-er, or what do you think?

I've read that the central exhaust is supposed to designate the new GTS variant. There have been test cars running the more conventional split exhaust so that will probably stay for the base Carrera and Carrera S models.

This photo really gives you a clear look at the front bumper.

Yeah what a nice scoop of a Darth Vader black new spec 911! Can't wait for the launch of this FL. I hope they show it within next few months before IAA

It looks spectacular. They have changed the whole front bumper desing, which was one of the worst things of the 991, and now looks amazing, the realights are slightly bigger, and look better now as well (Ithought they would look worse than the current ones), and they have even changed the door handles, looking much more modern now.

Brilliant.

Especially from the rear with the new vent on the pop-up tail, it definitely gives off a Darth Vader vibe. Couple that with turbo engines (*sigh*), you can also get a similar breathing sound too....j/k.

what's interesting here is that its getting some external and internal nip and tuck but a major engine overhaul. Emission regulation really killed the NA engine. Will be interesting to see what the used market for a 991.1 will be like in a few years

New front bumper is perfect. Pity they won't just copy it across the line, cayman and panamera could do with it.

I'm not sure I like it better than the 991.1 at all. The front is nice, especially the smaller blinkers but the rear now looks like that on the 928.

Just thinking out loud... wonder if the vertical slats on the rear deck and the odd exhaust arrangement signify a hybrid version?
