The next-generation of the VW Phaeton has now finally been confirmed in an interview by Dr. Winterkorn with the German magazine "Vanity Fair" which will be available from today.

Dr. Winterkorn is saying that VW has to be visible with competence from Polo to Phaeton. The next-gen VW Phaeton will hit the road 2011.

Autozeitung:

VW Phaeton II for 2010:

- Smaller and better handling (a bit less than 5 meters)
- Will fit between the Audi A6 and A8 (more favourable price)
- The modules from the longitudinal engine component system will be used by Audi too.

Its good idea VW resizing and pricing Phaeton II as long as they don't lose any of the 1st Phaetons quality :D

I wonder if this means the end of the Passat Coupe project ??

Yup, it's a good idea, but I don't think they'd be keeping any of their original owners that way... But then again, there aren't many of us around. :D

Maybe this IS the Passat Coupé? :t-hands:

Yeah they're alienating Phaeton I buyers, I would rather they keep going where they are currently but if changing Phaeton keeps the Phaeton name alive its okay for now :)

Can't be Passat Coupe as it was Passat based ;)

So the next Phaeton will not compete directly with the A8/S class/7er. I'm slightly sad about that ...but if this is what is required to make it work then I guess I'm for it.

I think what they will do, seeing as though Phaeton II & next Continental will be based off of Audi's aluminium MLP is:

-Phaeton II entry level luxury class SWB only but slightly shorter than A8

-Audi A8 III SWB & LWB

-Continental XLWB

I think that strategy actually works well, so none are exactly competing with each other ;)

Yeah I guess, the Phaeton I will always remain as the one who went against the odds. With the Phaeton II, VW is slowly succumbing to sales figures and economies of scale.

Oh, but maybe this Phaeton II is the reason why they're scrapping the Passat coupé project? :t-hands:

Same here Rob. :usa7uh:

So there won't be a Phaeton LWB? :eusa_thin

I actually don't know but US has being crying out for the SWB with V6 TDI and its that model which has Phaeton sales rising, it makes sense :usa7uh:

If LWB is needed down the track VW will easily be able to make it within a year or two after Phaeton II's release.

ps all guesswork :D lol

That's all true... I think the Phaeton II would do very well having only one version (SWB). The LWB version is already taken care of by Audi's new A8.

Though I'm sure the car will be a real piece of work, I don't see the point of this. Audi is the luxury brand, not VW. Why not quit this mad show-off of technical prowess and concentrate on making the regular VWs better? People simply aren't going to pay upscase luxury car prices for a VW, especially in the U.S. If they price it in between the A6 and A8, it will still be too expensive for a VW showroom. I don't see the point of trying to sell an uber VW.

Marcus, I don't really see the point of it all too... After seeing the Mk5 Golf and B6 Passat interiors, I'm convinced that VW needs to up its game for its bread-and-butter models. They are not bad at all... But not class-leading either. VW needs to do well where it belongs first, before venturing out into unknown uncharted ways.

Laying in the dark looking at the small screen, I write:

A3 > Golf/Rabbit
A4 > Jetta
A6 > Passat
A8 > Phaeton
Q7 > Touareg

Brothers, if Audi is the luxury brand that means VW has to settle for just good or even so-so.

Why can't a VW have a great interior?
Why can't it have wonderful styling?
What about fantastic engines?
And a wonderful Service Department and warranty?

If you have all that don't you have "luxury" also? Kissing up to the Audi is luxury mantra makes the horizon for greatness at VW fall to the level of molehill.

Paldi, VWs can have great interiors, wonderful styling, fantastic engines and wonderful service, but very few (or nobody) is gonna pay for all that. Sure, if it's a minor increase in prices, people wouldn't mind, but cars like the Phaeton are severely out of VW's target market. We both own Phaetons, and we know how VW made this car so supremely that no one who has ever owned one can ever imagine, but the truth is we're a minority.

VW hence will need to move downmarket with the Phaeton to "make more sense" to the consumers ingrained with the idea that VW = utilitarian.
