Volkswagen's Passat Coupe Spied Again

Volkswagen's stylish new 4-door coupé has been spotted again by our spy photographers, following our earlier spy shots of the vehicle two months ago. Since the introduction of Mercedes-Benz's CLS, four-door coupés have been all the rage, helping makers move upmarket while retaining sports car soul. And this is Volkswagen's effort spotted during recent hot weather testing in the US - ahead of its Geneva Motor Show debut in March.

The final shape is still disguised, albeit thinly, although the front and rear ends remain under heavy wraps. Our computer-generated artist impression does however reveal the sleek new four-door's potential looks - poised but effortlessly dynamic.

A choice of two engines will initially be offered, one being planted in the standard model and the second offered in a sportier version. A 1.8-litre turbocharged TSI engine, capable of producing 160 hp, will be used for the standard version, while a 300 hp R36 model featuring VW's 4-motion four wheel drive technology will top the initial line-up. Further engines will be introduced next Autumn.

The development of this new Passat variant is aimed at markets in the States, Europe and China, but the competition is hot on its heels. Audi's forthcoming A7 four-door coupe, presently in the planning stages, is expected to bridge the gap between A6 and A8 in luxury sports coupe guise, while a coupe version of the next-generation BMW 7-Series is understood to be under consideration by the German firm.

With a Geneva debut most likely, the testing program is likely to conceed more thinly-disguised Passat Coupes to the spy photographers, so stay with us for all the news.

Preview: 2009 Volkswagen four-door coupe

Engineers at VW are close to finishing up development work on a new four-door coupe, expected to make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year. Heavily camouflaged prototypes have been spotted recently testing in California’s Death Valley and these latest renderings are a good indication as to what to expect for the final version.

The new model is being designed by VW Group’s Walter de’Silva and as these renderings suggest will feature a similar headlight shape as the Tiguan, a toned down grille and the carmaker’s new trademark bumper with three air intakes and integrated LED daytime running lights.

The engine lineup will start with a 160hp 1.8L TFSI and top out with the 300hp 3.6L V6 engine from the Passat R36. A new 230hp FSI engine will also feature and will be shared with the next-gen Golf GTI. Diesel fans will be able to opt from a 140hp base engine or a 204hp unit that was unveiled in Audi’s Cross Coupe concept.

Inside, there will be seating for only four with the center console stretching across the length of the cabin. Headroom up back will be limited but, in compensation, developers will be adding several luxury items such as a second multimedia player, generous arm rests and air-conditioning outlets. Other optional features will include heated and electrically adjustably seats, a panoramic glass roof, a radar-controlled braking system and a touchscreen LCD interface for the DVD and MP3 player and satnav. Pricing should start around the $35,000 figure.

TACH AUTO CENTRAL – December 14, 2007: After waiting for several freezing hours at a remote northern Finland location, intrepid spy-photog Robert Andre Sandseth captured these latest pictures of the new Passat CC “4-Door Coupe.”

Shown alongside a Mercedes-Benz CLS, the VW vehicle was undergoing cold weather testing when the un-camouflaged shots were taken. It is believed that these are the first un-cloaked pics to be published.

Previous reports indicate that the CC was designed, in part, to replace the failed Phaeton as an up-market VW alternative, and to compete in the CLS segment. Earlier this month, Volkswagen confirmed the intended production of this car with the introduction of a mini teaser-website within the overall VW German website that reveals various close-up scenes.

It is rumored that the CC will have up to 5 different engine options, including gasoline and diesel, and that the vehicle’s dimensions are a 106-inch wheelbase and about 190-inches in length.

It’s expected that VW will debut the CC at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March. Since The Auto Channel will have a few people at the Geneva show this year, we'll be providing our usual comprehensive Press Pass Coverage video of the launch.

Interesting seeing it test alongside the A5 and CLS.

Looking bettter, but the front overhang is too long. It looks like it is going to have a massive front chrome grill like the current Passat.

I have to say the front end design reminds me of the Lexus GS and the Toyota Aurion. I am not a fan yet.
