Passat Passat Coupe News, Rumors & Spy Pics Thread (Update December 2007)

Re: New VW 4-Door Coupe

This car is going to be positioned below Phaeton, right?
I thought VW would have made CLS competitor and this just doesn't sound like that...I think I'm disappointed.

Re: New VW 4-Door Coupe

Yep inbetween Passat and Phaeton ;)

A sporty Passat CLS A6 is how I would describe it :D

VW Passat 4-Door Coupe Spied In Clear View

Rumors have been flying for some time that Volkswagen would create a stylish 4-door “coupe” version of their Passat, similar to the Mercedes CLS. Now uncovered in the U.S. southwest is a never seen before VW prototype which closely matches the description.

Judging by the polished and near production look of this prototype as well as lack of camouflage, masters of disguise, VW, seem to have managed to keep this prototype away from prying eyes during the early stages of its development. Usually, it is not until the end of a prototype's development that most of the full body camouflage is shed except for front and rear end coverings. Could we possibly have a Frankfurt surprise on our hands?

Re: VW Phaeton based Coupe

Sexy but it better have different interior design than the Golf and current Passat. I wonder how it is going to be priced.

Re: VW Phaeton based Coupe

One word. Proportions! the overhangs are outragous. I must say it looks american too. A fwd dodge/chrysler or something.

Inside Line has some great new spy shots of the VW Passat Coupe. Click on the "read more" link below to jump to the source and see more pictures.
Volkswagen intends to position this low slung sedan as a step up from the traditional Passat, so expect a more luxurious interior and a price tag that will push well past $40K. Sales are expected to start in the U.S. in the fall of 2008.

Re: VW 4-Door Coupe Spy pics Thread (Update August 21)

Gotta wait to see the finished product because this looks like nothing more than a squashed Passat with very weird proportions.

I don't like it.

On the other hand i don't like the "banana shaped" CLS either.:D

Re: VW 4-Door Coupe Spy pics Thread (Update August 21)

I'm with you. Plus, these ugly, big front and rear overhangs looks disaster...:eusa_doh:

Re: VW 4-Door Coupe Spy pics Thread (Update August 21)

Unlike the Merc CLS, this design is too cab-forward with overly long overhangs to pull off the four-dour coupé theme. Very reminiscent of a Peugeot 407 (who the hell wants one of those?!?) with a little bit of turn-of-the-century Detroit about it too...

A waste of effort from the people's car brand.
I bet the engine is mounted transversly. That's already a big problem for the styling execution. Coupé's hardly ever manage to pull off the front-wheel drive underpinnings - a notable exception being the old 406 Pinninfarina design - and end up looking clumsy. To execute the 4 door coupé theme effectively, a good starting point has to be a rear-wheel drive layout with the engine mounted longitudinally and the cab shifted as far back as is practical. The DLO also has to be verging on excessively shallow so as to "lower" the roofline relative to the sheetmetal and this is the only characteristic that's true to form in this car.

Simply put a poor manss CLS the same way the Chrysler 300C is a poor man's Phantom.

What a difference an angle makes, it doesn't look bad here at all.

The so-called four-door coupe -- kicked off in 2004 by Mercedes-Benz' E-class based CLS-class -- has become, along with crossovers, a vehicle type that seemlingly every automaker is rushing to develop. Volkswagen is apparently the latest automaker to lob its hat into the ring with this Passat-based vehicle recently caught testing in the California desert.

It is unknown if the vehicle is in any way related to the rumored Audi A7, but the style is clearly influenced by the CLS, particularly the shape of the greenhouse in the rear and the crease above the door handles. The rear end, however, is quite different from the CLS' and is closer in shape to the BMW 6 Series. The overall shape is strangely reminiscent of the late-90s cab-forward offerings from Chrysler such as the Dodge Intrepid and Chrylser 300M.

Expect to see the same powertrain options available on this yet-unnamed vehicle that are available on the Passat, including the 2.0-liter turbo four and 3.6-liter V-6. There is also the possibility of a high-performance R36 variant. It will likely sit slightly above the Passat in Volkswagen's range, but nowhere near the ill-fated Phaeton.

The back looks like it is going to be quite different for a VW:

Still, both overhangs are way too long for a coupe...

Re: VW 4-Door Coupe Spy pics Thread (Update August 21)

... and whilst the Merc CLS designers put in a masterstroke in disguising the B-pillar, the same cannot be said for this new VW. The B-pillar here is just as prominent as in any other VW saloon.

The Merc CLS looks like a coupe. This VW Phaessat looks like a sedan.

Re: VW 4-Door Coupe Spy pics Thread (Update August 21)

It looks a little like an American car I saw. I think it's the Sebring.

I don't like it one bit. I agree with what Martin said 100% - there's simply nothing to add to what he said.
