Touareg [Official] VW Touareg (CR - Third Gen)

Well, I saw the new Touareg roughly two weeks ago when I was on my way to work. The car had a Wolfsburg license plate. Must be a press car then. But overall design was sublime. It really is my favorite design on the current generation premium SUVs. Tastes differ but that car would be my No.1 choice right now if I wanted to buy such a "boat" ;-)

The doorpockets are hard plastic when even in a Kodiaq, those are covered with textile.
I saw that in a review. It's unfortunate but understandable as the Touareg needs to leave room for the Q7 to offer something extra.

Well, yeah, that‘s a valid point. Maybe that is the reason. However, there would still be enough room for the Q7, I guess ;). It‘s just one of numerous details. And in that class, it is not acceptable imo.
Maybe I‘m too pedantic. Just take a look yourself, and I‘m anxious to hear whether you would accept that in a 100k car :)

I was looking through a Touareg PDF brochure for the Middle East market [available here: https://www.volkswagen-me.com/conte...000347-VW-Touareg-Campaign-A4-Flye-EA-New.pdf] and there will be two engines on offer:
  1. The 3.0L TFSI with 250 kW/340 hp and 450 Nm of torque
  2. And, interestingly, a 2.0L TFSI with 185 kW/250 hp and 370 Nm of torque
The 2.0L is most likely the EA888 engine in everything from the Golf GTI to multiple Audis and the base Macan, but it has me curious since I don't recall reading that the new Touareg would be offered would anything smaller than a V6 bar a future hybrid setup. I wonder how the performance of the four-banger will be; I'll call the dealer tomorrow with more information.

If it makes for a tantalizing prospect, I might upgrade out of my current 2011 Touareg for one of these new four-bangers...

In the Land Rover offers entry level 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines for the massive Discovery. The petrol produce 300hp and 400Nm. Yes there will be some turbo lag if you floor at low speed but they are fast enough for most SUV buyers. Most importantly you save a solid 17% over a 6 cylinder.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the 2.0 would be hybrid and sold as a Touareg GTE. That would probably cause Volvo a lot of problems, just about all the XC90's that I see are T8's.

Wow just as VWoA pulls it from the U.S. market. Oh well. It would definitely sell better than the old one.

Many XC90s are T8s hybrids because there are no 6 or 8 cylinder options.

It probably would as we have moved past an era when every premium VW resemble a Passat. The pickle is whether there's enough Americans willing to pay VW money for a Q7? VW don't think there is and took the sensible decision of creating the Atlas with the right size and at an "appropriate" price for the badge.

Volvo choose a different path in the US and sells the XC90 at a bargain price. In the US the gap between the XC60 and XC90 is just 13% while it's 30% in the UK.

To get people in to the showroom Volvo even offers a FWD XC90 in the US but not in Japan, Germany, UK or even Sweden!

The XC90 is no bargain in the U.S. IMO. It's pretty pricey for an 4-cylinder SUV. Yes I know why VW quit on the Touareg, but with SUVs really steaming rolling all segments now they should reconsider. Toyota doesn't sell many Land Cruisers either, but they keep it around. VW should do the same IMO, especially now since it's a stunning vehicle inside and out with this redesign.

The Land Cruiser isn’t the best example imo. It’s over a decade old (mild refresh notwithstanding) and costs enough that each model sold is pure profit. Only fanatics buy those.

As much as I would like for the new one to be available in the US; price wise I don’t think they could aggressively market this state side. It would have to be about 10/20% more than the atlas to draw potential buyers to it; but as it sits the ‘premiumness’ of this SUV prices out of the US market

The new Toureg is incredibly sophisticated and the three cheaper air suspension with electronic anti-roll-bars is second to none. Selling it at 10-20% above an Atlas or offering a FWD with a 2L TFSI would been discrediting the car.............and the brand.

I meant just as a halo vehicle not necessarily the business case.

Interior of the new Touareg looks very premium the Audi badge would feel right at home here. Beautiful stuff.

Even the poverty spec looks good. Proving that a well designed interior without a lot of options can still look good.

I previously didn’t notice how low the central air vents are located. They are almost obscure while they are placed very high in the Q3 and some Skodas.

Volkswagen and interior...very stubborn at interior changes. In this car, it is steering wheel. Why the f would you install old steering wheel when everything is new and fresh?

^^
Today I sat in a Touareg with the same exact same black interior. The touch screen is the biggest draw. It's huge, exceptionally response and doesn't have any haptic feedback non-sense. Just tap and it will action.

Except for that, I was underwhelmed. It has the price tag of a luxury car but the interior quality of a premium VW like the Passat. Unlike sitting in a Velar, X5 or GLE, the leather is artificial and there are some unglamorous plastics on the doors and transmission tunnel. It probably rides very well but so does a Q7 or Cayenne.
