BS. Drums do not work like generators. There is nothing smart in this. Yes, due to the regenerative braking the normal brakes are used less but only in normal braking situatuation. When the brakes are used very intensivly the RB doesn't help a lot, because its braking power is limited to its normal power and the normal brakes are used when you need bigger braking power. AND DRUM BRAKES CAN'T BE COOLED and due to this an excessive fading appears.

It is better for the customer indeed that the drum brakes barely corrode. An electric car with an enginge at the rear axle will virtually never use the rear brakes, so customers would have to replace pretty much unused brake disks just because of corrosion.
Furthermore drum brakes are lighter, cheaper and they don't emit particulates when braking.

Why do you think the drum brakes do not corrode? Brakes corrode from the humidity in the air and the drum brakes are exposed to it as much as the disk brakes or even more (they are not absolutely tight). It's only cheaper and the hand brake mechanism is also cheaper. But it can never have the precision of a disk brake, which is very important for the application of the ESP. Also due to the higher heat and dirt inside the brake cylinder tends to block, which reduces the safety.

That's the reason given for drums on a recent youtube review of the ID.3 I watched.

And you can improve the cooling on drum brakes, anyone who has ever owned an original Mini should know about mini finns, they improve the braking quite dramatically. I installed these on my second Mini, they worked a treat.

Saw the ID.3 in Brussels. Nice exterior but found the interior plastics quite cheap, predominantly on the door and lower plastics of the dashboard. Not sure if a private buyer would pay a premium for a more expensive EV with poorer interior. Shows the cost cutting and not the VW upmarket positioning.

Looks nice, kinda like little bit taller hatch, is position of driver seat little bit higher or siting like in golf?

A bit higher than Golf in general but not much. Somewhere inbetween Golf and Sportsvan. Taycan was comfortably low, especially for an EV. Really liked that one.

First drive review by the man with the extra long interesting videos. The car is impressive overall, but in my honest opinion the interior quality is disappointingly cheap looking for a 35K to 40K Euro vehicle.

cheaper interiors is to be expected with electric cars until they reach volume production but I’m astonished at the in car entertainment and controls. VW might as well adopt android OS like polestar.

This was supposed to be a secret.... :D

Tesla’s Musk and VW’s Diess preview ID.3 and ID.4 in previously unknown visit

Tesla’s Elon Musk made one final stop during his German tour this week to meet with Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess. The two frontmen for their respective automakers are known friends, and Diess offered Musk a preview of Volkswagen’s upcoming line of electric vehicles.

Musk and Diess traded compliments about each other during the Golden Steering Wheel awards in Berlin, Germany, last year, where Musk was presented with an award won by the Tesla Model 3. Since then, it has been reported that Musk and Diess have kept a close relationship, with the Tesla CEO admitting he is supporting Volkswagen’s electric initiatives.

Musk credits Diess specifically, and based on a report from Handelsblatt of a recent meeting between the two men, Volkswagen and Tesla could be preparing for an even closer relationship. Diess even revealed the ID.3 and ID.4 vehicles to Musk, with the Tesla CEO taking the former car around for a spin.

The ID.3 and ID.4 are two of Volkswagen’s vehicles that will use the company’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix, or MEB. The German car company has admitted it has struggled with the operation and consistency of the MEB since introducing it into the company’s lineup.

However, Musk and Diess’ relationship has been based on accelerating the popularity of electric vehicles altogether. Musk has indicated in the past that the company’s only competitors are those who continue to manufacture cars that will harm the environment. Volkswagen is arguably one of the most active car companies in the world in terms of transitioning its fleet to a fully-electric lineup. Musk would undoubtedly approve.

While the finer points of the meeting remain unknown, it was revealed that Musk’s Gulfstream G650 took off from Berlin after a visit to the company’s production facility in Brandenburg. After 26 minutes of travel, Musk’s plane touched down at Braunschweig Airport, which is mostly owned by Volkswagen. From there, Musk and Diess coordinated a meeting.

While the quick hangout of the two men could have been a friendly gesture, there could be some evidence to suggest that Diess could be looking for Musk’s help in figuring out the software issues that Volkswagen has encountered.
In July, Teslarati reported that German automakers, like Volkswagen and Audi, were scrambling to come up with an answer to Tesla’s tech lead. Musk, who has been vocal of his support for any legacy automaker that wishes to transition to electrification, said, “Tesla is open to licensing software and supplying powertrains & batteries. We’re just trying to accelerate sustainable energy, not crush competitors!”

VAGs' expertise in the development of mass-volume scalable BEV platforms could be an element that leads to a deeper collaboration between VAG and Tesla. Teslas' supremely innovative approach to battery technology + charging would contribute to fertilizing the foundation for a highly mutually beneficial, very profitable cooperation.

Tesla need to scale their business. The obvious way to do so is by building more cars. However this is slow and capital intensive. Licensing could be a big opportunity to diversify revenue streams.

The only other way to grow bigger very quickly is through acquisition of other car manufacturers but that is expensive and comes with strings attached.

...hoping that VWs' first ID 4 deliveries will be of far superior quality to those of the ID 3 (which seems to be a bit bug and snafu infested). This is capturing some poor publicity for VW and they'll need to (and have promised to) address this immediately. Alas, history seems to repeat itself as I can recall when the Golf I was presented and initially delivered in 1974. Quite the innovative exercise for Volkswagen but with alot of loose nut & bolts, cheap materials and rust for the first year or two.

Have full scale deliveries started? The teething issues sound aweful as if the car has been rushed.

Currently, the "First Edition" model is being delivered and further configurations will follow in the coming weeks/months. And yes, the teething issues are annoying but do not seem to indicate any genuinely fundamental issues with the ID 3, provided that mediocre range is not a major deterrent. Online updates will eventually resolve a good portion of the software issues, more routine in the production process will surely introduce vastly improved assembly quality and finish. Volkswagen appears to be attempting to peddle the hard plastic interior applications as "modern and hip", but that's not working and has been annoying testers and customers alike. Apparently, the ID 4 is very considerably better in this particular aspect. Volkswagen will have to address this quickly. Much seems to indicate that it will be the ID 4 rather than the ID 3 that wins hearts and wallets as well as command genuinely large global sales volumes.

The looks of the ID 3 are really growing on me. But Volkswagen really needs to address material and assembly quality as well as price worthiness quickly. These will be "make or break" issues.

*= unless Volkswagen drops its' asking prices by some 6000-8000 Euros.

The German press has NOT been nice to this car. Autobild only gave it a 2+. For reference, they gave the Polestar 2 a perfect score of 1. Very unlike the German press that (obviously) supports German OEMs. This tells me that the ID.3 is probably a fairly mediocre car (more like a 2-) and the Polestar 2 is truly a gamechanger.

"For the price we would have expected more"
