Still aiming too high.

They have aimed high and delivered an exterior with details and touches you would only expect on a very expensive car. My issue is the disconnect between the interior and exterior.

From behind the wheel the view is very run-off-the-mill VW/Seat/VAG look with no curves or touches that match the drama of the exterior. Visually the interior looks 2nd class compared with the one of the Audi A5 which is cost as much but is more conservative on the outside.

Agree with the interior comment,but I can live with that,because it's a high quality,comfortable and never-look-dated interior.

So can I. It's well laid out and probably feels fantastic and the lack of design innovation is forgivable because of the exterior.

You all now how much I dislike the looks....

...but seeing all these real life vids and pics make me adjust my opinion a bit, and I'll wait with my final opinion after seeing it in real life.

Yesterday evening, I had the opportunity to have my first closer look at the Arteon. A dark pearlescent antracite car, "Elegance" package fitted with 20" alloys, dark grey leather inside. I must admit that the car left me pleasantly surprised. Many interesting details, very precise sheetmetal sculpturing. I liked the very subtle incorporation of the separation peg in the reardoor glass, C-pilar area. Far more elegant than on many other, far more expensive automobiles. I find the interior a clean, no-nonsense affair that exudes an air of high quality.

Would I actually purchase one ? Probably not. Yet still...as said, it left me pleasantly surprised.

Seen it several times now in the "flesh". As always, in the eyes of the beholder, but what an ugly, bad designed car. The former Passat CC wasn't a looker, but at least didn't hurt my eyes. This one does. Side profil is worst part of the whole design: rear part seems to be incongruent with the front part, the big wheels (I guess 20 ") look ridiculous. And than that sound... More 4 cylinder it can't come.

Spot.On.

Quite obviously, Mick: The weakest design element is the lack of a "prestige clearance" (VAG-speak for the distance between the base of the A-pilars and center of the front wheel hubs). Thus, the Arteon is a representative of the "cab-forward" faction. An element that is not becoming on cars that are larger than the "Golf segment" offerings.

Volvos' S90 series is an example of an excellent execution of the "prestige clearance".

Uh oh... Either a recall for the stability control is coming in the future or VW really screwed up the handling of the car.

My Spanish is no bueno, but from what I understood, they said the results in elk test were worse than they expected, the speed of 74 km/h (46 mph) is too low for a car of its type and they found curious that as they increased the speed the car's reaction went from progressive to uncontrollable with a tendency to oversteer rather than understeer. The worst result was when the car was in comfort mode at 76 km/h.

Just to show how bad that was, this is the new Audi Q5 easily handling the elk test.

Shame poor Audi. This VW has stolen way too much Audi DNA. It could easily be mistaken for one from the side profile.

I still think it's very ugly and disproportioned. A shame because from the VAG brands (except Porsche) VW is the only one I like.

I don't know which one is worse: the front overhang or rear overhang.
An extended wheelbase would do wonders for this design.

Volvos' S90 series is an example of an excellent execution of the "prestige clearance".

Seriously, nothing impressive about the Volvo because it only comes with small tiny 4 pots. They don't need any space in the front so they can design the car like a RWD.

If you want excellent execution, look no further than BMW and MB. The RWD cars obviously.
