Supra [Official] Toyota Supra (J29/DB)

The Toyota Supra is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured and developed by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is a definition from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond". The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.
This car is already dead on arrival. The majority of original Supra fans don't like it,Bmw fans of course like it,but only in words. Toyoda San made a bad decision on how to revive the legend Supra.
Do not underestimate its home market - Japan. Even without agreat export success, this car could be a hit. Here, in this forum, I haven't notice any Japanese member (but maybe I'm wrong) so we don't have a first hand opinion. Or maybe you read also Japanese forums, except the Chinese ones.

The first drive report of new car from auto magazine is always full of ritual words, don't take it seriously.

The new Supra concept car was launched in NAIAS in 2013,it's obvious US is its main target market,I can see it's underwhelmed there according to many initial responses from customers. And what will happen in Japan, who knows?Probably Japanese customers have the same reactions on this car with their American counterparts.

I don't read or watch car previews with only one exception. One needs at least a month of experience with a car to be able to truly appreciate its qualities, except if its a real car expert that can bring the car to its limits and can give an evaluation of its (only) dynamic characteristics for several hours. There are a lot wanna be experts but only a handful true ones that are worth watching or reading. But they are never the ones given the car for the preview before/during the launch, because they can not be influenced by the producers and the result can be different then the desired one.

This has turned out to be a very desirable sports car and it is a big head turner. The defining advantage it has over the Cayman and Alpine A110 is that fantastic inline 6 engine. Although its not a legend now with a BMW powertrain, who knows in the future this might just be in the same league as the previous Supra. I still remember when the previous model was tested in 1990 by some magazines they had some complaints about the car, with some even mentioning its bonnet lifting up alot at high speeds and the car losing high speed stability. So it was not a perfect sports car after all.

For interest sake here is a road test of the MK IV from CAR South Africa Jan 1994 (25 years ago). They said it was great to drive but negatives include steering with no feedback, a bulging bonnet at high speed and its ride quality.

For the record, I'm not nor have I been too crazy that there's a BMW engine under the Supra's hood (not because it's a bad engine, far far from it, but it's not a Toyota engine), but I am also realistic. At the time of Toyota's search for a partner, only one mass manufacturer had a tried and true inline-6, and that was BMW. There will be sizable contigent of Supra fans who are going to moan and complain that if it doesn't have a 2JZ block underhood, it's not a real Supra.

And to a certain extent, I undestand it, but 20 plus years after the mark IV and it's time to move forward. The few reviews I've seen and read thus far (about 6 or 7 thus far) have noted a discernible difference between the way the Z4 drives versus the Supra, so that's good in fostering each of their own personalities. I am just not ready to write the Supra off on a bunch of Supra boys on forums. On the fact that the sports car market is in a bit of death spiral, then perhaps, but on its own merits, Toyota and BMW have done well in setting out what they intended on doing.

I believe the new Supra is a brilliant sports car,but no matter how good it is,it's natural for BMW to take the credit. But if it's not so good as expected,Toyota will be the only one to be blamed. This is why I said it's not a wise decision for Toyota to revive Supra by this way.

I owned Z4M Coupe in the past, it was really a hot rod, fun car. And this is to me it's successor. More polished one. It's a real shame that BMW doesn't make a new Z4M Coupe...

As a motoring enthusiast I am delighted that Toyota have reintroduced this car and I personally think both BMW and Toyota benefit as the Z4 has turned out to be a much better drivers car with sharing a drivers biased Toyota coupe chassis and also the Supra has better build quality, infotainment and safety equipment by sharing BMW parts etc.

And sports car like 718,Supra is dying in the current market. On market wise,Toyota should launch a luxury RWD+AWD Crossover or SUV based on the new TNGA architecture asap. The competitiveness of Toyota/LEXUS in high end Crossover and SUV segment are so weak comparing to its German rivals.

My only complaint with the Supra is it's interior. They should have made a bit different design and not take it straight of BMW's without a single change.

Would I prefer a true Toyota-only approach to the Supra? Sure. They have the engineering know-how to do it and their fit and finish is good though materials used could use improvement. As far as partners go, BMW is a good fit.

I agree they have been dragging their feet for too long with that segment. That, and not trans forming the GS into an A7/S7 competitor.

Take a look at the post about 8 above this one, you need some glasses or you’ve never actually looked at the pictures and are just mouthing off, the interiors are pretty different, the Toyotas is nicer.

I would have prefered if they used switch gear that's featured in the New Toyota Corolla or even the Lexus UX Crossover which has switch gear that's miles ahead of the F30 in quality and feel.

F30 3 series interior.

A bit more imagination or inovation of the interior wouldn't hurt. Isn't Toyota multi billion $ brand?

It might not be a true "Supra" to the faithful, but the actual car itself is pretty nice IMO. I really like it inside and out.
