My view of the facelift is clouded by my opinion that the original E60 is the most beautiful sedan since the original XJ, but this facelift looks to me like a "dullification" of the original, an attempt to mainstream the design.
I also think that the reason that BMW got hammered over the last few years is because of the "awkward" E60 design.
& the price was a little bit unjustified for the car I drove (2K Cheaper than a 750Li)

My question to him is: why did he decide to go for 550i in the 1st place when he didn't care about design (which later he found awkward)?

Prior to my current 3 series, I have always had a 5 series and loved them all. So, before I bought my current 3 series (design very similar to my old 540i), I just had to give the 5 one last look, no matter what my reservations...Like I said, I just couldn't pull the trigger.
Over the last few years, the E60 design got hammered by the press and by the more traditional 5 series fans like myself who liked the previous generation 5. The criticism is not about the "driving experience", but rather about the looks. I also believe that the reason that 5 series sales is holding up well against the E class, for example, is because the bimmer 1) has better driving dynamics, 2) is $5 - 10 grand cheaper than a Merc E class, and 3) offers a MT as an option. For those who like to drive these attributes are hard to pass up unless you REALLY dislike how the car looks. And that was my problem. I couldn't see how I could spend all that money on a car that I didn't find appealing, no matter how good it drives and no matter how strongly I feel about the BMW 5 series. I'll just wait for the next generation 5 and see if it appeals to my taste. If not, for my next car I'll just upgrade my 3 and buy a E90 M3 for the same relative price as the 550i. Problem solved.
