Agreed. Similar issue as with the i4.

Yes and no.. the i4 is an interesting case because I actually like it's design, and doesn't look as awkward and tall as the 5er.

It looks tall, but way more proportionate than the 5er. The 5er could've easily looked good with a "stretched i4" style body and a normal trunk instead of the i4's sportback (and hence end up looking like a normal 5er) , so I think there's more to "compromise platform" and is a designer issue.

There's a reversal of middle-body surfacing, being inwards on the i4 in the doors, versus more flat edged and outwards on the i5, which certainly contributes to the heavier looking middle section on the i5.

The i4 is also not visually raising itself with a black side skirt, but instead again has a "inwards" not sure how to describe it, which makes it look narrower in the middle and wider at the wheels, instead of just slab sided like the i5.

Of course other than there, there's things like those muscular shoulder lines on the i4, and rounder roofline more similar to the previous gen 4er and 5er. But I certainly think the i4 does a lot better job at a "compromise" platform.

This is MY visual interpretation of the i4 vs i5, hope my message gets through as I'm not using the correct words to describe what I'm seeing.

You can't compare them like this. The i4 has very compromised rear headroom, something that the 5er can not afford. That's why it is much taller and this requires additional masking.

While I do agree with that, a lot of it is due to the "sportback" style liftgate which intrudes on the rear headroom. A more rounder roofline with a normal trunk, like the previous 5er as I mentioned, wouldn't have these drawbacks of the i4 GC.

EDIT: for example, 330i and 430i are both 56.8 inches tall, but the 430i has 1-inch less headroom in the rear, due to the liftgate mechanism.

That’s very, very kind of you not calling me a MB troll, just because I’m critisizing the design of the new 5er.

Of course the rear of W214 and W223 are totally different. What I see, looking at W214 is a sedan that is immediately recognizable as a Mercedes, a sleek and elegant sedan. MB stays true to it’s design history, it’s not forgetting it’s roots.
BMW 5 however doesn’t look like a BMW 5 anymore imo, it’s indeed on a different level than it’s predecessors, it’s lost the essence of what a 5er always has been; a rather sporty, elegant, slightly nimble sedan which is a joy to look at.
Mb is staying true is a strong statement...but lets agree for arguments sake, but what's the trade off? Evolutionary lifeless design, vulnerable to an advanced out dated look almost imminently, the need to offer egg-shaped pure electric cars which are a disgrace to look at and really intimidate the brand.

Yes BMW have moved on...mainly on this new 5er, but they are offering a much better package & product ultimately. The green ecstasy lovers can still enjoy a proper design, a Traditional BMW customer will also still get a product which takes the 5er to the next level.

And ultimately, change will come in MB, so better now than late. Mb took the wrong turn intentionally because like I said before, they couldn't take a challenge of overhauling their product to incorporate both powertrains. Shorter overhangs, taller heights, redesigned greenhouse. Can you imagine a Merc with a shorter overhang? It would be a disaster lol. Bmw have revolutionised their greenhouse, the kink, what can Merc do? Hmm, I thought so, not much really. Merc have problems. Can they even re design their half crescent moon look?

When they get desperate they'll do anything. W203 to W204? Drastic emphasis on a sport, youthful look? Why? Why not stick to their traditional look...a horizontally louvred grille with a bonnet emblem? If they did that, would the W204 have sold as much? Yes you guessed it right. Now, the Cs the Es the Coupes all with the same grilles. Who is true to their design history?

Had merc stuck to their traditional look and ride, I would like brand today and there would be a reason to like it. A luxury car brand. But since the last 15 odd years, they've gone astray. Quote: Stole ingredients from their next door neighbour's kitchen (Ref: WhatCar review back in 2007 of the W204), this is when the brand messed up and wernt no longer true to its history.

I asked ChatGPT to create a "quick 'n dirty"
jerman-car - like marketing post, highlighting the revolutionary design of the new 5-Series, saying that it is a much better offering than the E-Class.

This is what I got:

Too sophisticated.

The forum has become a bullying environment, mockery and aggression until the "purge" is achieved and they are left alone here speaking well of Mercedes and badly of BMW.

The "sophisticated" (LOL) are bound to infest the BMW threads and make it clear that opinions cannot be expressed without them making Personal Attacks against someone who does not do so and only thinks in their own way, like the clear examples above .
And the moderators are conspicuous by their absence.....

A Gettysburg Address sized serving of BS. Just mindless drivel.

I like it a lot in this photo, the wedge shape is perceived as very accentuated and moreover compared to i4 as it was put, the cliche "dynamic" shape, applies very well in this case

It would be great if this guy realized that the video is not about him but about the car, there is not a single shot where he is not in front of the car, they waste the moment because of ego and they don't even realize it, in any case here goes ...

As surprising as you might find this, when people come and parrot PR stuff about a brand on autopilot mode, other members start not to take them seriously.

I'm not surprised, I laugh a little about that too, I just don't know if that was the case.
