But I really do wonder why Mercedes uses the detuned M177 in the GT63. Why not give it the full 612/850Nm or even the 630/900Nm that the 4-door had.

Unless of course they're planning a GT63S or GTS 63 down the line with more power.

I know they have the GT63S-E performance, but that car should be in its own category.

You can almost guarantee there will be a GT63 S along with several other variants here soon.

Maybe in the sense that the MSA platform looks like a slightly modified MRA platform and lacking that rare supercar touch the previous car had with its bespoke unique platform.

The last GT was the end of the Dodge Viper architecture that started with the SLS, hence the long hood

Im talking about the regular performance car guy that has an above average paying job, is well off but not wealthy.

The guys who have graduated from running renault sports and bmw M3’s in their 20’s to now having AMG GTR’s and 991 GT3/3RS in their early 30’s.

The point is, the new AMG GT is now heavier, not as wide, longer, taller, worse weight distribution and no longer front mid engined.

The 30 year olds the previous AMG GT captured are now unlikely to “upgrade” to the newer model because in all effects its a completely different car with a different purpose.

Unless they lose serious weight with the new car, give it 700hp, and some proper aero the current AMG GTR owners will be moving onto mclarens, GT3’s and ferraris.

You possibly could not have gotten this market more wrong. The current GT owners were mainly retirees that hated the SL and bought the GT.

I’d be interested in seeing the demographic of the new GT though as the SL has become more compelling than the last gen. That said, not many people are buying roadsters or sport coupes.

I see less 911s as well. Everyone likes SUVs and cross overs especially since the power is so much more accessible and handling has become significantly better than what it was 20 years ago. Jack of all trades cars if you will. Sad but true

I wouldn’t count on it losing much weight in anything but the hardcore models. Just my opinion.

I would expect so given the platform, but here's hoping they work something out.
I really do wonder where that extra 250kg is coming from.

I have seen it at the dealership and it looks pretty good in the metal, especially with these satin gold wheels.

I think this new version is, first of all too damn heavy, and second, it shares too many parts with the Mercedes lineup. This hurts the GT's exclusive image as the sports car it once was IMO. The luxury features like the popout door handles, bottomless center stack, and column-mounted shifter. You would most likely not find these features in a pure sports car. It works for the SL because the SL is a part of the Mercedes family.
This new version should have been marketed as an SL sports car. (which it already is anyway)
Mercedes AMG should have went all out and modified the SL`s platform for a newer more exclusive GT or revived the fabulous SLR nameplate with something fresh and exciting.
I would pass on this GT and go with the 2025 Austin Martin Vantage.

In the U.S., the Aston Martin Vantage is $58k more. $136k for the AMG GT vs. $194k for the Vantage. The Vantage is now tuned to be a more intense sports car, so I’d imagine the next trim level of AMG GT will be more at parity demeanor and power wise.

Maybe some of the younger owners picked them up second hand. I don't know that many people my age or younger who could reasonably afford a brand new from factory AMG GT.

But tbh, I guess Mercedes will know their buyer demographics better.

How many times have car manufacturers “listened” to the owners only to complete f#ck it up?

So they said alot of people they asked said it wasn’t practical enough and too wide.

Generally if you need something practical you do not buy a sportscar.

Meanwhile people who want a sportscar want it to be a sportscar.

We like it because its so wide, and the bonnet so long.

So now we have a product that still isnt really that practical and isnt that great of a sportscar.

It has no USP. Why would you now buy a GT63?

Its the slowest of the bunch, has no USP in its design, the aston is basically the same price and has a more powerful benz engine…

We did a survey on the current owners about the new car, and no one gets it.

I guess time will tell, when sales figures start to be released.

The SL is already a failure. Infact I parked my GTR next to one and the SL just looked plain and dumpy.

That's a homologation race car right? Good. Need more competition in the space.

The old AMG GT is still being used in GT3 racing anyway. So if mercedes want to continue to compete, they'll need to homologate the new GT to make a proper fist of it.

Question is, do they care to? With Lexus in the picture now again, they might pull their finger out.

That rule doesn't apply anymore clearly. They don't need to homologate anything and can keep driving the old GT in WEC/Nurburgring/whatever if they feel like doing so. The rules do not mandate the existence of a street-legal counterpart

Fair enough. But if they want to have that racing pedigree back, then its in their interests to figure it out.
Unless they make a new AMG model to replace the old GT using the SLS platform again.

The current GT3 Evo is homologated until the end of the decade. During the N24 it was reported that they intend to keep offering, or a least supporting, the current model for a long while yet.

Lexus bringing their best to the foray is only beneficial to the space, we get another choice.

It's not that simple, but it's a requirement for initial homologation, not an ongoing requirement - they don't have to sell any once the homologation is met.
