In 1/2 a mile?

Sick.

CCP style?
CCP style would be if it was mandated you had to buy insurance from Tesla to drive on the public road else face "reeducation".

But that is not the case, right? You don't have to buy insurance from Tesla.

Heck, if he is not happy with $30/month hike, he can even cancel and get one of these other awesome deals -

Truly the worst thing I have ever seen from a car company. What a horrible, horrible brand Tesla is.
Another reason not to live in USA. Tesla insurance isn't the only one doing this.

I don't get it, how is this bad? A bunch of factors go into figuring your driving insurance - including your driving record, miles you drive per year, your age, even your marital status.... and much more, cause statistics show there is a correlation between these factors and chance of getting into an accident. That means people who don't belong to high risk category get great deals and those who don't, pay more, rather than be subsidized by the rest.

If anything, the Tesla's program is fairer, cause it gives more weight to your direct driving habits than indirect statistical correlation like marital status and zip code. Though, personally I probably will be worse off under it.

It's not just the USA. We have 'black boxes' here that young drivers can have fitted to monitor their driving and bring their premiums down.

F*** me though, those prices - is that because USA or because Tesla?

Another great and fair move by Tesla, which some peole are trying to turn into a drawback.
I personally feel very uncomfortable when travelling at night and this is due to the enourmously increased risk of an accident. What's so hard to comprehend? Increased risk=increased cost of insurance.

Yeah, people should be happy with a car that acts as a f#cking snitch. I get it.
A 30$ hike because you drive at night? And you actually think that's fine?

Is this a joke? It must be.

I was literally talking to a friends son about this yesterday, he's just passed his test and got his first car. It's about 15 years old (Corsa 1.2 IIRC), and it's cost him ~£1300 to insure - had he not taken the telematics box from his insurance company, it would have been over £1600. His dad, my friend, can also see the data so he knows if he's driving sensibly or not. It's safer... it's cheaper, and it's not compulsory.

Too much of the insurance business justifies a guilty until proven innocent approach towards risk to justify unfairly penalising young drivers, so I support schemes like the one above. At the end of the day insurance companies have to come up with some method to apportion value and cost - I think most do a **** job, and honestly the Tesla scheme doesn't seem much different in that regard, but generally speaking I don't think telematics based systems are a bad idea.

At the end of the day I'd assume Tesla insurance is cheaper for Tesla's because in the event of body repairs they're paying themselves, rather than charging a premium to third parties for doing the work --- rather than it being anything solely about the telematics.
