Hot takes: the world reacts to divisive new BMW 7-Series

BMW has whisked the covers off the distinctively styled new G70 7-series and all-electric i7 sister limousine - and keyboard warriors across the world have gone into meltdown.

It's a fascinating example of how social media can polarise debate. Haters stirred up controversy around the design, traditionalists went all misty-eyed for the Beemers of yesteryear and design aficionados reflected on the legacy of Chris Bangle, the last design chief to set the cat among Munich's pigeons with 2001's E38.

It's all very tribal and most observers appear to fall into one of the following camps. Here's our analysis of the typology of the BMW commentariat in 2022.

1) The official view: 'forwardism' is BMW's messaging on the new 7-series and i7
BMW design chief Domagoj Dukec told CAR in a recent interview how the brand's customers fall into two broad camps, with two-thirds fond of BMWs with an elegant and harmonious aesthetic. Cars like the 3-series and 5-series are aimed squarely at them. But elegant and harmonious doesn’t, says BMW, appeal to the other 30 per cent. They want to make a statement – hence cars like the 4-series and new 7-series. ‘These individuals really want to polarise,’ says Dukec. ‘In the past the 4-series was just a sporty 3-series, but these customers are different – they want a more irrational car, and they’re willing to pay more for that emotional expression, and to really make a statement.’

Group design boss Adrian van Hooydonk elaborates: ‘I don’t think good design has to polarise but I think the concept of beauty can be polarising. It comes back to the customer, and if one kind of customer is looking for a beautiful and timeless car, then of course we will design it. But there are also customers looking for something like an X6, which is certainly polarising – you either hate it or you love it. That approach wouldn’t work for a 3-series or a 5-series because they sell in bigger volumes, so it’s clear you can’t come with one solution.’

2) The traditionalists: 'BMWs used to look better'
Naturally, the large-nosed 7-series has spurred many to don their rose-tinted glasses, looking back fondly at the 'good old days' of more elegant, understated BMW design. Is this reactionary or a valid comparison? You decide...

5) It looks better in person!
A common and very reasonable observation of some of the more controversial designs of the past two decades. Several high-profile journalists insist the new Seven looks better in the metal and CAR's Jake Groves who attended the world debut is among them. Only time will tell: the best solution is to see a new car on local roads among the traffic and road furniture that we're all used to.

7) 'It looks Chinese...'
Yes it does. Probably because 70 per cent of new 7-series sales are destined for Asia, says BMW. And fully half of those sales will be in China. Remember: this new model may not be aimed at fitting into the UK high street...

I can't believe how much I like this car given how bold the design is. It also looks better in videos than in the photo's and I am looking forward to seeing it IRL And wait until @klier sees the hood shut-line!

That makes complete sense.

According to the Car magazine article Martin posted, it's 70% for Asia, half of that for China (which with BMW will usually mean mainland China)... @Oida was your source the same?

No one noticed this?, despite the fact that I always thought (seeing the spypics), that it would be a modern interpretation of the E32, it is evident that it is the E38

So I add how it is that many claim that they do not like it, if it derives from the supposedly from the most beautiful 7 series in history....

When you focus on the details, you notice that some materials are cut.no wooden parts and ambient light in the back. These are the visible parts. For example, the carbon core no longer exists.

I like that the touch screen on the door cards being an end to huge rear central dividers with a console of switch gear and a screen. This results in more room for rear passangers.

I've seen many people who don't like the overall design say they like the roof and window lines. What personally bothers me is the proportions under it. Look how little sheet metal is above the front wheel on the E38 vs the G70. You would never accuse the E38 of taking cues from Rolls-Royce because of its tall body.

It'll still be a hit in its target market regardless. BMW didn't cater to Asia when building the E38. Times have changed.

New 7er looks ginormous compared to the G11. Just look at the size difference, damn.
I’m mostly surprised by how much taller it is.

Is bigger than G12, it's biiiiiig, but due to excellent proportions & monolithic design it looks smaller from the side.
But IRL the car feels absolutely huge. In every dimension possible. It's of RR Ghost SWB size - almost identical dimensions! Huuuge!
It has an enormous stance & presence. The one-on-one real-life comparison with Ghost is very interesting, exterior design wise.

Wow! Have you seen the car irl yet? How does it look compared to the official pics?

No...not Car Magazine...

My "source" is something very briefly mentioned and caught on a German-language automotive media site earlier today. I can't remember which one unfortunately. Of course, maybe I simply misunderstood/misconstrued. Sorry to say, it can happen...

Just a camouflaged prototype so far, unfortunately. But nonetheless the presence & stance was there to observe & feel. It's of a RR Ghost level - due to huge dimensions, incl the height.

I don't know about that.

I've obviously not seen one on the flesh, but it's clear that even with 21" wheels it looks under-wheeled, if they offered it with some half decent 22" wheels, as the EQS has, it might help with the perception of the vehicles height... however, both this model and the outgoing one suffer the same problem from the side...

... the bulk that's fore and above the front wheel ... it contributes to significantly emphasizing the front overhang...

It's not unlike the sharknoses of old in terms of where the bulk sits in relation to the vehicle, but to pull it off the older sharknoses had a shorter overhang. Cars like the E24 actually had quite a big overhang, but the height above the front wheel to profile of the bonnet was not so great. Whilst looking into this... The 7-er can swallow an E3 3.3Li whole...

A lot of the look of the car works for me on this basis it invokes the E23, but parts of that haven't translated well. The front overhang is one.

This very effectively exemplifies just HOW large the G70 is. Also a reminder that I'm...old.

An uncle of mine in Bavaria had a dark metallic blue E3 3.0 Si back in the early 1970s'. I found it a magnificent, large automobile at the time. Just a wee bit more compact than the W116 S-Class or second-gen Opel KADs', the E3s' direct German competitors. Upper league luxury sedans whose dimensions were surpassed by only the M-B 600s, RR and Bentley sedans and those "Big Three" Detroit road barges.

I dunno...it's just me I guess. I simply cannot understand or embrace "private ownership" automobiles significantly exceeding 5100mm in length and 1470mm in height. Actually, the G70 is quite narrow in relation to its' other dimensions at 1950mm (I believe). The Porsche Taycan and Audi eTron GT are wider, yet some 400+mm shorter..
