I'm a bit concerned that under Ola Källenius' helm, the quality of M-B automobiles may suffer due to excessive bean-counting. Perhaps we are witnessing the dawn of an "Era Schrempp 2.0". The again, my concerns may be totally unwarranted. Still, Ola Källenius has degrees in international management, finance and accounting. And he is not an engineer, unlike Jürgen Schrempp. Could that make things even worse, I ask myself ?

We're totally seeing Schrempp Part 2 and soon Daimler will be eaten by Geely.

No bad thing as Daimler will be part of a strong partnership in the largest car market in the world. Daimler will definitely have technical leadership in this combination. Judging by Geely’s stewardship of Volvo, they will be a good co-owner/partner of Daimler.

I think Geely has been very smart and astute in how they have charted their future development. They spent €10billion on Daimler stock (under water now) and they got themselves a seat at the Daimler board, and dips at Daimler’s autonomous driving, operating system platform, and electric car technologies which they would not be able to develop for €10billion. Geely offers Daimler better access to the low and middle-end of the Chinese car market. In return, Daimler gets increased volume and scale which allows them to amortise their R&D costs over hundreds of thousands of Geely or co-branded (or newly branded) cars, which underwrites Daimler’s future against its German peers and guarantees its position in the top tier of the global automobile industry.

Simultaneously, Daimler will have to figure out a way to deepen their existing alliance with Renault and make it work (profitably) beyond existing ICE powerplants and platform sharing arrangements.

It seems the Japanese manufacturers are resisting globalisation as best they can and looking at a government-led domestic consolidation solution before looking for outside partners.

Renault? Daimler couldn't pick a worst partner even if they tried. Renault sucks.
Renault in Brazil is not the same like Renault in Europe. Their engines are pretty good. As for the Navara/Alaskan and Kangoo lipstick job by MB, that's another story.

Renault is rubbish everywhere. Mercedes has quality problems and then proceed to choose another unreliable car maker to be their partner. Mercedes is run by f#cking idiots!

Where is the official info on the V12? Does anyone think there is a market for a regular length S650 Maybach, like the same length as a S580L?

SALES RELEASE FOR MAYBACH S 580 4MATIC & 680 4MATIC IN MAY 2021

If you want to order the new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class model of the 223 series, you can do so from May 2021 - at least as the S 580 4MATIC and S 680 4MATIC, i.e. both as an 8-cylinder and still in the 12-cylinder version. The first customer deliveries of the new model will then take place four weeks later - in June 2021.

8-cylinder S 580 4MATIC and 12-cylinder S 680 4MATIC

With the Maybach model of the new S-Class (Z 223), we expect the sales release in Germany for the S 580 4MATIC with 4-liter V8 bi-turbo engine and the 12-cylinder M 279 as S 680 4MATIC. The top engine is combined for the first time with the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

While the 8-cylinder version offers an integrated starter generator (ISG) and a 48-volt on-board electrical system, the 12-cylinder version does not. The S 680 4MATIC will continue to deliver the usual 612 hp, the 8-cylinder 503 + 21 hp from the combustion engine and electric motor.

Plug-in hybrid variant as S 580 e 4MATIC comes later

The S 580 e 4MATIC is also planned as a plug-in hybrid for the Maybach model, but will not be available either at launch or in all markets. Here you use the M 256 with 367 PS as usual and combine it with a 150 PS electric motor. Further performance features are a 28.6 kWh battery and a recuperation power of 163 hp. The vehicle can be charged in 3 phases using an 11 kW AC charger or via DC (CCS) with a maximum of 60 kW.

We are currently only expecting an S 450 4MATIC or S 480 4MATIC variant with an M 256 in-line six-cylinder and 367 hp +21 hp e-boost for China, which is more than logical due to the high displacement tax there.

Thank you @Wolfgang, as @Merc1 mentioned they could have done some enhancement for V12, anyways with 4Matic now in place there will be a performance enhancement for sure.

Yes. Besides 4Matic, believe there's also the 9G-Tronic transmission now, and slight adjustments to make it compatible with current emission regulations. :)

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
