1998-99The BMW era Phantom isn't really the successor to the Phantons which went before, it was built as a replacement for the Silver Serpah.
1999-2002
OMG, the Silver Seraph! I loved that car as a kid (weird right?), but it went out of production before my dad could buy one (responsibilities, etc.) and already felt content with his X308 XJ. As "outdated" as it was, that's where my love for Rolls-Royce died when it and the Corniche went away. I became strictly a Bentley guy (eventually an Arnage joined us in May 2005) when I saw the Phantom 12 years ago. I respect the Phantom and appreciate an occasional ride in one, but will never love it. Too blocky and gargantuan. I actually prefer the F02-based Ghost and even preferred the Maybach 62. A lot of W222 is owed to the Silver Seraph, as well as modern Bentleys.
1995-1999 Silver Spur Touring Limousine
1995-1999 Park Ward Limousine
2000-2002 Park Ward
Well the Silver Seraph fits more logically as the predecessor of the Ghost (in terms of market segment) ....but I understand why you would say that.
I'd say the Phantom replaced the 2000-2002 Park Ward. Phantom development even paralleled the early refresh of the Silver Seraph in late 1999/MY2000 (December 1999 Phantom concept approval) and the Park Ward introduction at Geneva in March 2000 (Phantom design freeze May 2000). Shockingly enough the Silver Seraph was designed by June 1991 (below), halted by 1992, resuming in March 1994, and being fully final by December 15, 1994. Took 6.5 years till 1998 intro.
Apparently Michael Jackson loved the W126, RR Silver Spur, and Park Ward a great deal, only growing to love the Phantom in his last years. He would've gone for the Maybach Pullman, over the more Teutonic VV221 Pullman Guard.
