GLS [Official] Mercedes-Maybach GLS (X167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

edit: for context I've had not a lot of sleep over the last three days, and a lot of painkillers. I thought this was hilarious, YMMV.

Hartmut Sinkwitz, MB's director of interior design, explains: "The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS combines first class comfort with the luxurious space of an SUV." Showing exclusive nappa leather in mahogany/macchiato. :)

AMG/Maybach/Pagani engine builder Michael Kübler describes the new powertrain. :)

"The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC „The Ultimate Luxury SUV“.

Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 12.0-11.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 273-266 g/km)[1] is driven exclusively by the powerful and discreet M 177 – a new, electrified variant of the V8 petrol engine with a displacement of 3982 cc, 48-volt on-board electrical system and integrated starter-alternator (ISG). ISG is responsible for hybrid functions such as EQ Boost or energy recovery, while allowing fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. The development focused on the long-term improvement of the consumption and emissions figures. At the same time, the customers' power expectations need to be met. As a result, the engine produces an output of 410 kW (558 hp) and 730 Nm of torque. An additional 250 Nm of torque and 16 kW/22 hp output are available temporarily via EQ Boost.

Power is transmitted by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The wide spread of ratios for gears one to nine ensures a significant reduction in the engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high levels of drive and ride comfort. Likewise standard is the transfer case with variable transfer of the drive torque from 0-100 percent (Torque on Demand) between the axles.

EQ Boost through the ISG offers great potential for fuel saving and added comfort due to the load point transfer during which the combustion engine is used at a more efficient operating point due to precisely measured additional torque of the ISG.

During deceleration, the kinetic energy from the starter-generator is converted into electric power ("recuperated") as appropriate to the driving situation and used to charge the battery.

If they changed the interior chrome trim strips to bronze or copper coloured like the concept it would have made a big difference to make this more special inside compared to a regular GLS. At the moment only the wood and leather looks different and the reclining back seat. I agree with the comments from alot of you guys that this was a half baked attempt from Mercedes, somehow they missed the opportunity with this car to really make it different and special enough to stand out even more compared to the GLS and rivals. I would like to see more leather and wood options and exterior colours to see if something nicer is not yet shown to the public.

^ Some interiors do have typical Mercedes-Maybach rose gold contrast piping. For example this designo leather package in crystal white/silver grey pearl may feature it? :)

Ambience from the yachting world and rosé gold as a symbolic Mercedes-Maybach colour

The high-gloss or open-pore wood surfaces of the trim elements, plus the upholstery in nappa magma grey/black or nappa mahogany brown/macchiato beige as standard ensure a very high perceived value. The same colour combinations are also available for the optional designo Leather package. For this a lighter upholstery colour in crystal white/silver grey pearl will become available as an alternative soon after market launch, awakening associations with interior design in luxury yacht-building and thereby underlining the high quality of the selected materials. One typical Mercedes‑Maybach detail is the colour rosé gold for the piping on the white leather.

Another feature exhibiting a high level of craftsmanship are the multiple box pleats along the centreline of the seat upholstery. The leather is indented at the centre, and the two halves on the sides are folded in to face each other and form two padded pockets opposing each other across the indentation. The two pockets are sewn together at the top and bottom. The result is a smooth, stretched seat surface that can adapt itself to the contours of the back and is taut where the seat is supposed to give way less. The box pleat motif is repeated in the cushions accompanying the Leather package, where it is cleverly emphasised: the box pleat on the cushion covers allows a view of a sewn-in contrasting strip in the rosé gold colour tone of the piping.

Wood trim elements with Mercedes-Maybach emblem matching the remaining decor are attached to the backrests of the front seats as standard, additionally enhancing the ambience in the rear. On request the screens for the MBUX Rear Seat Entertainment system can also be installed on the front seat backrests. Via the Maybach accessories range, suitable pre-installation kits for the installation or carriage of mobile computers of different formats are also available.

The in-door speakers of the Burmester® surround sound system are inset into the wood trim behind metal meshes. High-quality chromework and Mercedes-Maybach badges in the interior create further highlights. A stimulating contrast is created by the traditional materials, their craftsman-like finish and the modern high-tech appointments of the Mercedes-Maybach.

^ Doesn't look like it? Seems to say "Pirelli P Zero MO 285/40 R23 107Y" on the sidewall. MO indicating they were made to MB's specs? :)

It's looking better and better and the interior I think is amazing...Those rear seats are just luxury and all the liitle gadgets and goodies at the rear are amazing.

I know some of us would have loved more of the concept bits in the car but it's the same as the S class maybach just slight improvements and milk the profits.

On The exterior it's pretty much what's expected I wish they did a better job of the lower front part on the bumper below the grill nobody is taking this car off road just make it one elegant bumper no need for the scratch boards or whatever they called.

The two tone white and silver looks good and the one above here looks very elegant.

The only good thing is the cushy rear cabin, and that's probably how it's supposed to be. Otherwise, I kinda hate it, especially in two-tone, as it embodies obnoxiousness.

More I see this the more I want them to make last years Concept I think it will be a hit if they make itnand Mercedes will create a new segment... Come on Gordan and team what are you waiting for.

Probably you can not understand this kind of luxury.

Gordon Wagener: Luxury is about being admired by society for what you have, or what you've achieved, or what you do.

If you think this looks like a frumpy GLS with a bad two-tone paint job and some badly coordinated extra chrome thrown at it... you're unlikely to admire it as a possession, therefore by Mercedes own definition, it's perfectly reasonable to not consider this as a luxury item at all, let alone find the need to "understand" it.

???? What an empty definition, but in part so true at the same time, that statement lacks the main fact of enjoying it for what it is and not only to rub it in the faces of others, certain people lose the compass and do not have the feet on the ground, Gordon should dedicate himself to design more and talk less

No problem. Probably you can not understand this kind of luxury.

Well, meeeee-ow. That's sassy.

Buuuuut....you might be right. Perhaps I don't understand this kind of luxury. The type of luxury where one tarts up an SUV with a different grille, some slightly fancier wheels, two-tone paint job that's not befitting this body type, or the front compartment that's barely better than a standard GLE, let alone a standard GLS. Yet there's an exorbanant mark-up for it. Now, I've acknowledged that the rear compartment looks very comfy and lux, but everything else is a thin veneer over something comparatively not so special. So, yeah, I don't get this kind of luxury nor do I want to.

That said, I see the value in a Maybach S-class sedan because at least the basis for it, an S-class, is decidedly more special and more bespoke within M-B's line-up. Especially, since it's a longer wheelbase S sedan. The Maybach S-coupe was a money-grab exercise, especially as their Exclusive trim is much less obnoxious than a Maybach S-coupe.

Sadly I think his definition of luxury is one which superficial people would agree with.

For me, "luxury" is something which provokes an emotionally positive reaction in oneself. A reaction which cannot be quantified, and nor can it be valued.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
