GLS [Official] Mercedes-Maybach GLS (X167)


The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

I was driven in one of these today. What a waste of money and a poor excuse of a ”Maybach”. Interior doesn’t feel anymore special than a high spec GLE/S. People are paying big money for the badge, wheels, and reclining seats.

I think the GLS580 is the sweet spot for the GLS. Looks great and isn’t exorbitantly priced.

Don't crucify me peeps, but I didn't think anything assembled in the US had a hope of being a real Maybach given supply chains etc.

Some people buy 5 GLS Maybachs for their spouses.

It would be great, if it had more than 2 choices for the interior color and a full leather package.

What MB here does isn´t that much different than what for example Ford does:

The Ford F-150 pick up trucks starts at $ 28,940 for the XL trim, while the highest trim level begins at $70,825 for the Limited trim level and with options it can beyond the $80,000 mark. And this is just for the F-150 line of trucks.

Furthermore Ford offers an SUV with the name Expedition, based on said F150 platform ,starting around $50,000, which has a more luxurious sibling starting at $76,000 that can go over $110,000, when you option it out.

MB is simply cashing in on an market that wants to spend crapload of money on luxury CUVs/SUVs. If you can manage to sell a $160,000+ vehicle based on a shorter $55,000 vehicle, then you deserve to be praised and not to be shit on.

MERCEDES-MAYBACH GLS 600 4MATIC: FIRST DRIVING TEST WITH 558 HP

You had to read a lot about the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600, the GLS model which Mercedes provided with a Maybach logo. We took a look at the 558 hp luxury ship for ourselves. One thing in advance: compared to the competition, the model with a base price of 162,494.50 euros is almost a bargain - at least at first glance.

Lots of chrome polarized on the front

The Maybach variant of the GLS already polarizes in advance due to its exterior with a lot of chrome on the front. Apart from the front design, which clearly appeals specifically to the target groups in Asia, the GLS-based model offers a world of its own.

Under the grill, Mercedes-Benz uses a 4-liter V8 bi-turbo with an electric starter generator (with a 48-volt electrical system). 410 kW / 558 PS (at 6 - 6,500 rpm) and 730 Nm of torque (at 2,500 - 5,000 rpm) ensure that the 2.75-ton model is effortlessly put into motion. The acceleration values prove this. The 100 km/h mark is reached in just 4.9 seconds, with the propulsion being electronically limited at 250 km/h. But the model is not intended for racing... but good to know that you could.

In our test vehicle, as expected, Mercedes-Benz equipped the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 almost fully and did not omit any highlights. Looking at the surcharge list, neither the special two-tone paintwork - in our case in cavansite blue / iridium silver - at a price of 20,825 euros, nor all designo packages and nappa leather upholstery in exclusive crystal white / silver gray pearl (!) For an impressive 16,065 euros. Surcharges for what some people buy a small car for, but make the GLS Maybach model look really exclusive.

Only fully equipped all the benefits

While the standard equipment of the Maybach model still has to do without an exclusive first-class rear, our vehicle with all equipment options ensures a total vehicle list price of an impressive 257,744.69 euros - including 19% VAT. Of course, including two champagne glasses (in sterling silver) for 787.99 euros each, and the corresponding holder for 952 euros was not forgotten. After all, those who buy a Maybach are not buying a basic model and expect the highest level of luxury and comfort. Rightly. Maybach delivers and attacks the competition from Rolls Royce with its Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga.

For luxury customers in the USA, China or the Gulf States, the almost most expensive model in the Mercedes-Benz model range is also a superlative model. Its highlight is not directly behind the steering wheel, but clearly in the rear of the vehicle. In the largest expansion stage, there is no second or third bench seat, but two business seats that can be moved horizontally at the push of a button.

Driving test

When entering the Maybach variant of the GLS, the automatically extending running board (on the side of the vehicle), which is intended to facilitate access to the interior, is particularly noticeable. The boards extend almost the entire length of the vehicle from the front to the back door. You can easily withstand a weight of up to four people. At the latest when the vehicle starts moving and there is no longer any weight on the boards, they will automatically retract and stow away in the underbody.

When you first look at the interior, you first notice the complete leather covering in the interior, which clearly distinguishes the vehicle from the normal GLS variant. Even the smallest corners have not been forgotten, which also extends far into the doors. The white leather looks particularly elegant and makes the vehicle a highlight.

The Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC has 8-cylinder and 557 PS as well as 16 kW / 22 PS (250 Nm) starter generator and also shows this performance when propelling. However, the engineers paid particular attention to one thing: silence - and if possible at the level of the S-Class. A lot of insulation is also used. It extends to the trunk cover, which has been reinforced quite impressively and effectively.

All in all, the Maybach rolls so quietly and inconspicuously, only a good pressure on the accelerator changes the character of the large luxury SUV. Then the 2.8 ton truck pushes forward tremendously, but remains acoustically restrained.

In 4.9 seconds to the 100 km / h mark

The available 730 Newton meters of torque push the large GLS to the 100 km / h mark in just 4.9 seconds. Can be done, does not have to be. The Maybach can move very quickly, but it is clearly not built for cornering or the racetrack. Here the “Sport” button in the drive program is more of an homage to times gone by.

Despite the opulence of the vehicle, it takes a surprisingly short time to get used to the vehicle, even if the vehicle has impressive exterior dimensions. Large exterior mirrors and many glass surfaces also help to provide a better overview, as do the electronic assistance systems and the 360 degree camera when parking.

If you don't want to hear anything from the vehicle, you usually don't. It goes unnoticed that only four out of eight cylinders work between 800 and 4,250 revolutions. The transition is also completely unnoticed. But that doesn't mean you become an environmentalist.

Meets high demands

The Maybach-GLS is a luxury vehicle for high demands. Especially for more comfort when driving, the “Maybach driving mode” has been thought of, which not only starts in second gear, but also regulates the air suspension so that as few bumps as possible and thus the highest level of comfort are achieved. The chassis set-up has been specifically designed for the rear - i.e. exactly where the most important person sits: at the rear right. In Maybach mode, the GLS drives very gently and calmly. It should create an impression of "floating" rather than driving. The excellent air spring irons away almost everything that is unevenly on the road. Rolling and pitching movements are only passed on subtly.

The "Curve " function can be optionally switched on or off, while the start-stop function is not used in your own driving mode for reasons of comfort.

The highlight is definitely the rear area

Our driving test also quickly showed where the ultimate highlight of the vehicle is located. To do this, you don't have to steer the vehicle yourself, you just have to sit down exactly where the model is intended: to be chauffeured. Accordingly, the manager sits in the rear right in the rear. Only here do the real highlights of the model become apparent on the way to the red carpets of the world.

Taking a seat in the rear, you are spoiled for choice as to how you want to sit or whether to treat yourself to a comfortable massage first. Drinks come from the central refrigerator as usual, while the usual folding tables are available for work. Anyone who would like to watch a film first, stretched out on the reclining seats (almost like in the first-class cabin of some airlines), can do so while the world outside goes by almost unnoticed. Would you like a quick champagne? - the specially designed goblets are ready at any time.

Why Mercedes speaks of an “oasis of well-being that only a large SUV can offer” becomes clear as soon as you have taken a seat in the rear. Drive a Maybach model yourself? Please, if you want this and specifically do without the highlight in the rear, should do so. It just doesn't necessarily make sense to itself. A possible exception is perhaps those who want to travel quickly to polo with their own horse. Driving it yourself makes sense, especially since the GLS Maybach has a towing capacity of 3,500 kg.

But back to the rear. Almost every important function can be controlled from here. Apart from a non-available automatic closing function of the doors or even driving functions. The navigation for the driver can also be adjusted or changed from the rear. The portable MBUX tablet, which can be used to make most of the settings, is available for convenient operation.

Conclusion :

For us, the Mercedes-Maybach 680 4MATIC is not the prettiest vehicle in the Mercedes-Benz model range. Above all, the powerful radiator grille with lots of chrome on the front bumper did not immediately make the vehicle an eye-catcher. We also found the GLS basis for a Maybach model questionable. This picture has changed after our test and intensive contact with the luxury SUV with a view to the overall picture.

What leaves the factory in the US plant in Tuscaloosa has more than convinced us in terms of luxury and driving comfort. It is true that the Maybach model does not use a 12 cylinder and only uses the 8 cylinder with 4 liter displacement and ISG, which, in contrast to the competition, seems almost puny. On the other hand, the Maybach-GLS scores all the more in terms of ride comfort and equipment and quickly lets you forget the excessive chrome on the front.

For China, however, the engine is probably irrelevant: they even offer a six-cylinder variant, which consequently makes more than sense due to the high fines due to the exhaust gas values.

The current delivery time also shows that the model is establishing itself on the market and with the targeted customers: those who currently order a model will receive it in 2023 at the earliest. So: Everything done right when it comes to the Mercedes-Maybach.

What we noticed:

o First SUV with a star on the hood

o Too many chrome elements on the front for European tastes

o Fixed separation between the interior and the trunk

o There is no possibility of separation from the driver

+ Very high level of comfort in the rear

+ generous space

+ very high material appearance, flawless leather

+ Fast and comfortable driving experience

+ very good insulation with very little outside noise

+ pleasant "Maybach driving mode"

o Retractable board initially unfamiliar.

That interior does look good, but there are a lot of things Mercedes should have done to make this vehicle more special. The V12 for one, truly different leather colors, different woods, different seats. There is still time. A GLS 680 can debut when the S680 does right lol?

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
