GLS [Official] Mercedes-Maybach GLS (X167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

Loved the coach line kind of treatment on this two tone

Thanks! It's altogether rather regular though, isn't it [U...

Thanks, Martin. To compare, configured a Mercedes-Benz GLS 580 4Matic. Added two dozen or so options which are standard on the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. The difference is just about 25K, roughly similar to what I seem to remember from Mercedes-Maybach S-Class pricing... :)

LESS TWO-TONE PAINTWORK FOR THE MERCEDES-MAYBACH GLS :)

The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS is now offered with fewer two-tone paintworks than initially thought. The optional designo diamond white bright / obsidian black (Code C22) paintwork is no longer offered.

Two-tone paintwork exclusively for the Maybach variant of the GLS

As a unique selling point and visual differentiation, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is optionally available with a Maybach two-tone paint finish for 20,300 euros in addition to two plain paint finishes and seven metallic paint finishes as well as a designo paint finish.

While the designo diamond white / bright / obsidian black paintwork presented first is no longer offered for production reasons, there are six different paint combinations to choose from:
  • cavansite blue / iridium silver (C19)
  • obsidian black / rubellite red (C21)
  • obsidian black / designo kalaharigold (C23)
  • emerald green / mojave silver (C24)
  • iridium silver / designo diamond white bright (C25)
  • iridium silver / selenite gray (C30)

About the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC can be ordered at the base price of 156,078 euros (incl. 16% VAT) exclusively with a V8 engine and 410 kW + 16 kW EQ-Boost (557 PS + 22) and 9G-TRONIC.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC is intended to represent a new kind of luxury in the SUV segment. It expands the range of the Mercedes-Maybach brand by combining the body shape and the technical basis of the GLS with the luxury of a top-class sedan. The biggest difference - in addition to changes in the exterior - is the modified interior, which has also been noise-insulated.

"Two-tone paint finishes are optionally available, and these underline the balanced proportions of the body. A total of six combinations are planned, the color named first being that of the lower section: cavansite blue/iridium silver; iridium silver/designo diamond white bright; iridium silver/selenite grey; obsidian black/kalahari gold; obsidian black/rubellite red; emerald green/mojave silver. These paint finishes are rendered particularly elegant by the fluid course of the separating lines, where a fine pinstripe in the one color merges into the body of the other color along the vehicle's beltline. This fine line once again echoes the pinstripe motif." Source: Mercedes-Maybach

There isn’t nearly enough customization here
Which is still more than what the S450 Maybach(By far the most popular engine choice in China and also the only one in 2020) allows for the Chinese clientele. They only have this configuration there(At least that is what the Chinese configurator says):

iris.jpg

Light brown seats, Burled Walnut veneer, black dashboard, well at least there is a wooden steering wheel.

I doubt it will sell in the numbers the Maybach S sedan does

Well the outgoing Maybach S started in the USA for example at more than $170,000, while the new GLS 63 begins at $132,100. In Germany the GLS Maybach has a 10,000€ higher base price than the GLS 63. Applying this, the GLS Maybach couldget in the US a base price around the $140,000 region. That´s just my assumption. A 6 cylinder version(Important in some markets) can of course even lower the base price of the GLS Maybach.

That being said... the mahagoni interior is my favorite and it doesn´t cost that much.

How about a different front end instead just making the Maybach grille fit the standard GLS grille opening?
Different seats like the ones in a Bentley or Rolls where the rear infotainment screens are hidden and then pop out when needed.
All these light leather colors are nice, but where is the dark blue leather, dark green, tobacco, palomino tan from back in the day? You know real customization.
Where are the exotic woods?
Where is the GLS650 with the V12?
How about different tail lights?
Full access to the G Manufaktur catalogue would be a great start right?
The fanciest and best suspension (E) should be standard.

What's the goal here? To compete with Bentley and Rolls or just offer a slight fancier GLS? It's clear what this really is regardless of the intended purpose.

Profit. Outfitting the Alabama plant for the full Maybach experience was clearly cost prohibitive. I totally agree though, makes you wonder why they even bothered.

Backlogs for Germany / Europe. :)
  • GLS (X167), combustion engine: Q3 / 2021
  • GLS Maybach (X167MM), combustion engine: from Q4 / 2022
  • G-Class (W463), combustion: Q1 / 2022

The first customer-ready Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 built in Alabama rolled off the assembly line at the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International facility in Tuscaloosa County in September.

Mercedes unveiled the vehicle late last year, saying that it represents a new form of luxury in the SUV segment, as the Maybach badge is reserved for the highest-quality equipment and appointments.

It’s interesting the Maybach interior components are made in a separate area of the Alabama plant. Makes me wonder why there’s not more interior combos available. I wonder even more what can be special ordered.

Gorgeous colour combo.

I think the intention is to do what they did with the last S class and target a portion of the market not necessarily wanting a Rolls or Bentley, but willing to spend more $$ on a Mercedes with a bit more cachet.

I think we have to aknowledge that Mercedes is going to take baby steps with Maybach.

I hope they add more exterior colours and different colour leathers and woods. The configurator on the German site is disappointingly limited with different options

CHANGE YEAR 20/2 FOR THE MAYBACH-GLS CAN BE ORDERED

Modification year 20/2 has also been available for order for the Mercedes-Maybach GLS of the X 167 series since October 6, which entails changes to the exterior, interior and equipment.

Diamond white bright / obsidian black paint variant not available

While the designo diamond white bright / obsidian black paint variant is no longer available in the year of change (which has never been delivered in advance), the coating of the speaker grilles for the Burmester 3D surround sound system or Burmester High-End 3D has changed in the interior, identical to the normal GLS model surround sound system. The LED lighting of the grab handle in the headliner has also been changed, while the mesh in the passenger footwell has been removed.

The Remote Services (00U) and Plus Services (33U), as well as Remote Services Premium (34U) and Remote Services Advanced (37U) are now available. Smart Home Integration is now also available as a new feature of the voice assistant “Hey Mercedes” in conjunction with the extended function MBUX.

maybach2-1-scaled.jpg

Assisted parking in and out of parallel parking spaces is no longer available

As in the GLS, there is no assisted parking in and out of parallel parking spaces with the Maybach model, while the perpendicular parking function is retained. This applies to the features of the parking package with reversing camera and the parking package with 360 degree camera including Active Parking Assistant with PARKTRONIC.

The driver assistance package (23P) will be adapted with the change year 20/2 and expanded with the turn function in the active brake assistant, the end of traffic jam function for DISTRONIC and the emergency lane function. The active lane change assistant is not included in the package. In the future, the Driving Assistance Package Plus will receive an extended restart of up to 60 seconds in stop & go traffic, as well as improved traffic jam driving up to a maximum of 60 km/h.

The preparation for entertainment and comfort will in future only be available in conjunction with the MBUX rear entertainment (code 864).

I don't think it will matter honestly. I don't think this thing will sell either way. It's a complete non-effort IMO.
