SLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (C197 / R197) is a front mid-engine, 2-seater, limited production sports car developed by the Mercedes-AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, with the assistance of David Coulthard. The car is the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. SLS stands for "Super Leicht Sport" (Super Light Sport).
I don't know why, but I didn't think they'd make a RHD SLS.

I don't think I remember seeing a RHD SLR??

You're right. The SLR was never made in RHD. As to why they're making SLS in RHD..? Well, I think it has much to do with Mercedes' intention to compete globally with the SLS so RHD markets such as the UK, Japan, Oz etc are seen as significant enough. Heck, I even know of a few South African SLS orders in just my circles of "acquaintance".

It's funny to see that SLR was never offered in RHD, especially because it was developed in collaboration with McLaren. And McLaren is from the United Kingdom. And in the United Kingdom, everybody has the steering wheel placed on the right side of the car.:D

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Oh well.

There will be plenty more as they're being shipped all over the globe right now.

Hideous colour, but well - the car is still looking great.

Matt purple. That's probably the first time ever I see a color like this on a car. Looks funny, almost makes the SLS a toy car :D

I think the owner can safely say that he has a unique car, lol

I thought McLaren had nothing to do with this car at all?? I'm pretty sure actually. Only the SLR.

Last night I actually saw one in person!

It was nighttime, so it was difficult to tell if it was a dark gray or black. But it was parked at a hotel lobby valet, both wings soaring in the air. After I passed, I stopped at a red light, where said SLS pulled beside me. When the light turned green, I heard the burliness of that 6.2 and it just sped off, leaving me and my passenger in awe. Wow.:D

The number of affluent RHD markets have increased significantly over the past decade. Hong Kong, Singapore (funnily enough, Pagani's top market), Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand are buying more luxury German cars than ever and their collective demand now warrants the expense of making RHD version of the SLS.

The SLS is a high-volume niche car with probably 16,000-25,000 built during its lifecycle (standard, cabriolet, Black Labels). The costs of making the RHD version can be spread over a large number. Also, Mercedes-AMG is probably charging more for the RHD versions of the SLS. Rightly so, as long as the they do a good job.

Designing the aluminium spaceframe for RHD application is no problem. Much of the powertrain and running gear are already in use in other Mercedes. There were not too many dedicated RHD components needed to be engineered, and therefore the costs are not prohibitively high.

What made the SLR difficult for RHD was that the car was not designed with RHD from the outset because it was always going to be a low-volume model (but blame whoever you like). Just look at the front bulkhead of the SLR's carbon tub and you'd see it would have cost a lot of money to make it into a RHD (all the additional testing and crash-testing costs). A properly engineered RHD SLR probably required a dedicated carbon fiber tub. The shape and linkage of the steering rack (A-Class derived) made RHD less than ideal (the steering of the LHD SLR was nothing to write home about, can you imagine a RHD version?!). The location of the ancilliaries such as the hydraulic pump for the steering and brake, and pedal box also made it difficult. Then there was the cost of making a RHD dashboard................................
