Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster hits the web with online configurator

Everyone's got their compulsions: Touching wet paint, licking a metal pole outdoors in the winter, pushing that kid into the swimming pool... you know, the usual. But Mercedes-Benz is more constructive with its own brand of obsessions.

When Mercedes makes a sportscar, they just have to turn it into a convertible. The SL may the best most obvious example, but take a look also at the SLR McLaren, which spawned three roadster versions, the Le Mans-derived CLK GTR, which was offered as a convertible (albeit in very limited quantities), or the touring car-derived CLK DTM, which was offered as a cabrio as well. Noticing a trend here?

Now Mercedes has released its latest flagship convertible in the SLS AMG Roadster, and all is right in the world once again. But knowing it's out there is one thing. Playing around with one is another. Unfortunately, most of us will never get that chance, but whether you have the means to actually place an order for one or not, you can at least play around with the new online configurator.

The tool allows you to choose from nine exterior colors (most of them various shades of silver), seven interior leather choices, three convertible top colors and four different sets of wheels. Follow the link to check it out for yourself.

Press Release

Affalterbach – The comedian and TV presenter Jay Leno has paid a visit to AMG. Ola Källenius, the Chairman of the Mercedes-AMG GmbH management board, gave Jay Leno a comprehensive overview of the company and its products. During his one-day visit the American automobile enthusiast was not only able to acquaint himself with the new SLS AMG Roadster and the SLS AMG E-CELL during test drives, but also hand-assembled an AMG V8 engine.

Jay Leno was greeted by Ola Källenius on his arrival at Stuttgart airport. After a brief familiarisation with the car, Jay Leno had the opportunity to drive the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster on the motorway and on country roads: "A great car that gives you a fantastic feeling. This will be a real winner back home in California," Jay Leno commented. During subsequent test drives on the Daimler AG test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, the American talkmaster was able to enjoy the incomparable dynamism of the Roadster. Jay Leno: "The SLS AMG Roadster delivers top performance. Whether the engine, transmission, handling or brakes – you feel that the engineers at AMG are serious! When I was 18 or 19 years old I worked for Mercedes-Benz in America. I knew about the test track in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim from films in which Mercedes sedans like the 220 SE or the 300 SEL 6.3 were driven through the banked curve. I have always wanted to see this for real. It took me over 40 years to do it, but now I'm here! It's fantastic to drive the latest AMG models here on the test track today."

Thrilled with the dynamism of the electrically powered gullwing model

Jay Leno was also able to enjoy a practically silent but emphatically dynamic driving experience behind the wheel of the SLS AMG E-CELL: "The power delivery from standstill is fantastic. It's unbelievable how the 392 kW and 880 newton metres catapult the gullwing down the track. Very impressive, especially because you hear nothing except a little wind and tyre noise. And thanks to four-wheel drive, the SLS AMG E-CELL has no problem in bringing its enormous power onto the road. The performance and handling are every bit the equal of the SLS AMG with the V8 engine. This is the future! I have a Baker Electric dating from 1909 in my collection. It's unbelievable how electric drive technology has developed over 100 years or so!"

Engine assembly according to the AMG "one man, one engine" philosophy

Following a tour of the AMG Performance Studio, where individual customer wishes are realised by dedicated craftsmen and special one-off examples are created, Jay Leno visited the AMG engine shop and assisted in the assembly of an AMG 6.3 V8 engine for the SLS AMG – by hand of course, according to the traditional AMG "one man, one engine" philosophy. Every AMG technician in the engine production department is responsible for an engine from start to finish. Accompanied by two experienced AMG technicians, Jay Leno installed the crankshaft, cylinder heads and even the wiring himself, and carried out the subsequent quality tests. Afterwards he applied an AMG engine plate bearing his signature to the completed eight-cylinder power unit. The TV star was then able to watch "his" AMG V8 engine being tested extensively on the glass-walled test bench.

Accompanied by a camera team, the 61 year-old made a video of his activity as an engine assembler and the test drives with the SLS AMG Roadster and SLS AMG E-CELL. It will shortly be possible to view the result on his website Jay Leno's Garage. This is where Jay Leno regularly reports about his passion for automobiles. While the SLS AMG Roadster will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt/Main on 13 September 2011, potential customers for the SLS AMG E-CELL will need to be a little more patient: a small series of the electrically powered gullwing will be produced from 2013.
Ola Källenius: "Driving Performance" at first hand for Jay Leno

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Mercedes-AMG GmbH management board: "I am very pleased that such a passionate automobile fan as Jay Leno has found his way to AMG and Affalterbach. We are quite sure that during his test drives with the SLS AMG Roadster and the SLS AMG E-CELL, we were well able to deliver on our brand claim of "Driving Performance". And Jay Leno also cut a fine figure as an M159 assembly technician in our engine shop!"

Jay Leno delighted after visiting AMG

Jay Leno presents "The Tonight Show" on NBC, the world's first and most successful late-night show, and also the longest-running entertainment programme on US television. The TV entertainer is a passionate collector and owns more than 200 vehicles, among them 40 Mercedes-Benz models, valuable classics, current sports cars and classic motorcycles. There is also an E 55 AMG in his collection, but after the test drives in the SLS AMG E-CELL and SLS AMG Roadster, Jay Leno can well imagine "that one or two AMG models might soon be added to the line-up. I also have a project under way at home which is now nearing completion. A Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 dating from 1971 is receiving a transplant in the form of a 386 kW (525 hp) AMG 6.3-litre M156 engine!"

Jay Leno summed up his impressions very positively after his one-day visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach: "AMG delivers unbelievable performance – whether by man or machine!"

I feel sad for the next gen SL, due out soon. It will not even look half as good, and will be equally expensive in the AMG models 63 and 65....Poor, poor SL.
donkeykong said:
@kiler The SLS is priced around 200k much more expensive than a sl63.

@donkeykong: The 65 is in fact much more expensive... if there will be one next gen SL65. ;)

Klier, don´t need to worry. You absolutely can not compare the SLS and the SL (in fact, i was afraid of this "territorial fight" too)
But as you know, i have a SLS for a couple of months now, my wife drives a Sl 500, -> i know, what i´m speaking of. The SLS is a car wich is useless as your daily drive. Before my eyes i see the forthcoming SLS Roadster owners who will complain, that they are not able to cruise through the town easyly at low speed and that the SLS is soooooooo "incommodious" :D

So, a good chance for the new SL not to be underrated.

BTW The SLS Roadster is soooo gorgeous, i really didn't expect that! I nearly... i mean, maybe? Should i? Aaaaaaaaahhh, oh, i really would like to ... ok, next year?

I said 63 not 65.
Yes, :eusa_doh: you :eusa_doh: wrote :eusa_doh: it :eusa_doh:.
But Klier wrote 63 and 65
So he is partly correct, but shall we keep on bean counting?

Here is an interesting pic from the AMG private Lounge (i hope its no problem to show it here)

This is an interesting screen that is not onboard of the older SLS, i don´t have it.

I wasn't arguing with anyone, and I didn't mention the 65 because I knew it was more expensive than the SLS,but it also offers alot more power.

Yippie ki yay!
On 23. August, Ola Källenius (AMG Manager) will visit our local Merc dealer. Ok, thats no so interessting for you, but he brings the SLS Roadster along!!!!
So i have the chance to see the beauty in real life, YES!
If i´m allowed, i will of course take some pictures an show you.

:)

Hi!
First the good thing: I saw the brandnew Raodster and had enough time to sit in and so on.
Bad thing: I was not allowed to take some pictures, sorry for you.

It was the AMG Sepang brown, definitively not a colour of my choice, it was a brown overload. It has the bronze brake calipers, a beige hood and the nature brown leahter seats, that means 4 different brownish colors, nonono.
But of course it still looks fantastic and i´m quite sure it will also sell fantastic (AMG expects 1 to 1 with the Coupe), that means they will sell from now on much more Roadsters.

The SLS is such a nice car. I wish they it didn't make it so that someone at my height would have to chop their head off to even remotely fit in the thing.

That's why you buy the roadster and drive it on sunny days!

SLS is stunning as a roadster. Maybe better than the coupe?

IAA 2011: AMG Lightweight Performance: SLS AMG E-CELL gets carbon-fibre spine

8da9fdcb833bffc71acce95b3d181ce4.webp

The SLS AMG E-CELL body shell being shown by Mercedes-Benz AMG at the IAA 2011 is one trailblazing outcome of its ambitious “AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy. Its key element is a transmission tunnel made out of lightweight carbon-fibre composite material (CFRP), which is structurally integrated into the aluminium body shell and firmly bonded with it. The high-strength and stiff CFRP component helps to reduce weight, while also serving as a monocoque housing for the battery modules.

The carbon-fibre battery monocoque in the SLS AMG E-CELL forms an integral part of the body shell and acts as the vehicle’s “spine”. The advantages of carbon composite materials were specifically exploited by the AMG engineers in its design. These include their high strength, which makes it possible to create extremely rigid structures in terms of torsion and bending, excellent crash performance and low weight. CFRP components are up to 50 percent lighter than comparable steel ones, yet retain the same level of stability. Compared with aluminium, the weight saving is still around 30 percent, while the material is considerably thinner. The advantages in terms of weight achieved through the carbon-fibre battery monocoque are reflected in the agility of the SLS AMG E-CELL and, in conjunction with the highly innovative wheel-selective four-wheel drive system, ensure true driving enjoyment.

Baby steps, baby steps. Good direction in adopting exotic and more light weight materials into normal passenger cars.
