Just the Facts:

* The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG should begin reaching U.S. dealers in mid-July, about two months or so after the 2013 SL550.
* The 2013 SL63 AMG is based on the redesigned SL, with the usual performance and cosmetic upgrades.
* The optional AMG Performance Package kicks up output to 557 hp and torque to 664 lb-ft, while trimming 0.1 second from the 0-60 time. Top speed rises to 186 mph.

AFFALTERBACH, Germany — The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG should begin reaching U.S. dealers in mid-July, about two months or so after the 2013 SL550.

The 2013 SL63 AMG is based on the redesigned SL, with the usual performance and cosmetic upgrades.

The AMG edition will offer buyers a choice of two output levels. The standard AMG-tuned twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter direct-injection V8 is rated at 530 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Driving the rear wheels through an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission, the engine delivers 0-60 acceleration in 4.2 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 miles per hour according to Mercedes-Benz.

The optional AMG Performance Package kicks up output to 557 hp and torque to 664 lb-ft, while trimming 0.1 second from the 0-60 time. Top speed rises to 186 mph.

AMG has trimmed 275 pounds from the car, which enables the standard twin-turbo V8 to return 30-percent better fuel economy — 24 miles per gallon on the combined European driving cycle.

But the focus remains on performance, with such standard features as AMG active suspension, AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, AMG high-performance compound brake system, AMG sports exhaust system and AMG alloy rims with 255/35R19 front and 285/30R19 rear tires.

Options include an AMG performance suspension, AMG rear axle differential lock, ceramic high-performance compound brakes with red-painted calipers, multispoke AMG forged wheels (available in matte black) with 255/35R19 front and 285/30R20 rear tires, and an AMG performance steering wheel.

The SL63 AMG gets a unique front apron with a large airdam, an AMG radiator grille, LED daytime running lights, side sills, rear lip spoiler, diffuser-style rear apron and chromed twin tailpipes.

The interior features AMG sport seats in single- or two-tone nappa leather, an AMG instrument cluster, carbon-fiber trim, illuminated sills, ambient lighting and an IWC analog clock.

Among the extra-cost equipment: Active Parking Assist, Airscarf heating, Bang & Olufsen BeoSound audio, Driving Assistance package, keyless go and climate seats.

Inside Line says: Hard to imagine that a 530-horsepower SL wouldn't be enough, but we're guessing that most SL63s will be ordered with the Performance Package anyway. That's how SL buyers roll.

I am relieved they gave the engine the full torque (or at least the highest rating it has been allowed so far) and not the 590 maximum as in the CLS and the E. Have been relieved of this ever-since they gave the SL550 516 lbs/ft. The SL is a comparatively light car and was worried they would use that logic to give it a wimpier engine vis a vis the S and CL 63. They still played affirmative action with the 557hp rating, to protect the SLS's bragging rights, though.

I look forward to see more colors, as the grey is not doing it for me.

Also, this is the first SL with optional 20-inch wheels straight from the factory. Sadly, I see they are still sticking to 285mm rear tires. I hoped the would offer a wider offset for the Performance Package at least. With all that torque, the rears are set to fail. I look forward to a Black-series-style package sanctioned or directly by the factory.

For some reason, I had been expecting more alcantara treatment on the inside, though. The Black-series C 63 Coupe's treatment came to mind when I envisioned the SL63's interior.

AMG is going backwards with their wheels... the car will look way better with S/CL AMG type of wheels and not those that so much lack imagination.
Conservative wheels on a car that looks like a drawing board for experimental designs...
I disliked the last 6-series and loved the last SL... how things change

I like it, but the presentation isn't making me drool anymore on it. Maybe it's the (matte?) color and black wheels. I need it to present itself with levels of elegance and timelessness, not fashion/fad effect. I know this design has it in it. I don't like AMG's going the "spokey" route with their wheels, I prefer the classic AMG 5-Stars.... Muscular, timeless, sporty, and still luxurious all in one.

In a recent video, they showed the R230 in a frame right before the R231, and the R230 looked much smoother. Also, I don't like the R231's headlights at all.

Aside from that, I still really like, and potentially fully love this car, but until I see it in person, I need some less "racetrack" pics and optioning to see how well I like the SL63 in all its settings.
