SL-Class (R231) [Official] Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG (R231)

Mercedes-Benz launched the sixth generation SL, internally the R231, at the North American International Auto Show in January 2012. The R231 introduced aluminum bodywork, its weight advantage offset by higher safety and convenience equipment.

I've seen many new SL550's on the road and non of them moved me like when I spotted the new SL55 the other night. My jaw just dropped. And I wasn't the only one staring at it as I sat in traffic.
Totally a different car in AMG guise.

Damn, nice pic. I agree, I've yet to have a new SL550 move me in person. Still waiting for that day and I'm sure it will (hopefully) come. The SL63 I saw at a Dealer looked SO much nicer than the SL550 from the front. It's clean and sportily elegant grille makes the SL550's look dopey, unfinished, harsh and just blocky in comparison. I hope this is evidence that M-B are now realizing that "bigger doesn't mean better" as they give the higher end SL63 a smaller grille than the "regular" SL550. M-B's luxury cars look more appropriate with bigger grilles, but the Sports Cars don't need these massive battering ram looks.

Any word whether/when the AMG 4matic comes to the SL 63? Seems kind of an oversight to have the SL AMG outperformed by the E-class wagon S-AMG. With the higher power and torque rating, the engine on SL would be able to redeem prestige given the new performance awd.

But the SL65'a wheel spin and handling (or the lack of) borders on farsical compared to the Bentley Continental GT. The V12 engined models need all wheel drive.

In your opinion they do. I mean does every performance car need AWD? Its bad enough that Mercedes has seen fit to follow Audi in this regard with AWD, which is ok on the sedans, but a roadster like the SL should stay RWD IMO.

The Bentley reference is just nonsense because that Bentley is only AWD to keep it from being FWD, not because of some performance brief handed down by the front office. Their top of the line car doesn't have AWD. Its a matter of convenience only.

I do not buy the "pure" argument will be upheld with the SL remaining RWD for the sake of it. If we want to talk pure, let us not forget that these cars have been turbo-ed to death, not to mention they weight as much as some SUVs. Therefore, AWD is not the red line in the sand in terms of ruining the "pure" factor for the 231 SL. I find a Porsche to be a lot purer than an SL, for the record.

In SL's case, there may be challenges to fitting a front differential under the hood. On a wider brand note, it is going to also be tough for Mercedes to fit ABC/MBC with the AWD (it is said these suspension are very heavy, take a lot of space and are complicated). If given the choice between AWD+Non-ABC or RWD+ABC, I will go for the second option anytime. Once you have experienced ABC, it is very hard to go back to something else.

A SL being pure has nothing to do with it being a turbo or not. Thats a BMW M issue, not the SL.

Of course a Porsche is, its a sports car, the SL really isn't.

Without AWD, the SL65 just cannot make full use of it's power even in a straight line. Wheel spin in 3rd gear is not exactly wanted. Most of the power goes to waste with the traction control trying to keep everything under control.

I don't think buyers care much about the underlying hardware of the Bentley Continental GT. But Mercedes should because it is a direct competitor of the SL65.

Then we disagree. Use bigger tires. Don't want no AWD SL. Need some tail-happy, tire spinning cars left in the world.

Even larger rear tires? There's no room in the wheel wells and fuel economy will suffer further.

But I do agree we need some tail-happy wheel spinning cars in this world!
