First thing that came to my mind, after handing over the key to my dealer, were Robert Palmer's lyric's; "Might as well face it, you're addicted to S63". The attentive reader immediately sees I've changed the lyrics only slightly at the end of the sentence. It describes my feelings after a day drive with the S63 AMG 4-Matic. But let's take it from the start.
08.30 AM I got a cup of coffee and a litttle while later was handed over the keys. I've driven V8's and V12's (and several Porsches) before, but wasn't quite prepared for the deep roar that came out of the twin double exhausts, starting the car. I'm sure in that moment the hair on my arms raised. Not for being cold or so, no, for pure expectation of what was coming.
First drove it in comfort mode (airmatic and AMG Speedshift MCT 7G gearbox). Easy going and cruising. Allthough it had beautiful matt black 20 inch wheels (285/35 and 255/40 tyres) on it, the drive was smooth and rather comfortable for a sportscar (yes, that's what I call it) with 585 HP/900 Nm torque. Of course not as comfortable as my S-Klasse (W222). But more comfortable as I had expected it to be, before driving it. It could be a perfect daily driver. From a noise point of view (NVH) on the same level as my sedan. The only difference to me was, that I could hear it's engine a bit more. Which is a sheer pleasure. Because this engine realy impressed me. In cruising mode, you feel the relaxed power, but the S63 doesn't show off. The V8 is there in front of you, gives you this souvereign feeling of "If I wanted to, I could" and makes your drive nice and easy (as long as you wish so).
After savoring the splendid cruising capabilities, I took another, more curvy road. Put all buttons on sport, and there he was...Mr. Hyde. The engine immediately roared loud and the sport exhaust system does his job. That engine noise is absolutely great and indeed addicting. After the first curves you feel as if the car has changed into a true sportscar, steering is very direct, suspension is stiffened and as if on rails you're attacking the curves. And all the time accompanied by that wonderful engine sound. A 911 is more precise in curves and on a circuit it probably makes better laptimes. But will it give you more fun and pleasure on a day to day basis? Personally I answer this question with, No it doesn't. Come to think of it, Porsche 911 isn't a competitor to this S63. Two complete different cars, actually.
This S63 is best described as a sportscar dressed in Smoking/Tuxedo. Driving it, you forget that you're sitting in a beautiful interior (mine had exclusive package with designo black piano lacquer trim). You only have this constant smile on your face and you're wondering why this day passes quicker than other days of the week. On my way back to the dealer I heard in the back of my head this song of a man who died much to early ....Might as well face it, you're addicted to S63....
