Yesterday evening I was driving home from office and enjoyed the impeccable comfort of my car. The thought that crossed my mind was:”Though you really dislike some design cues, interior aspects and the HMI in general, you probably end up buying yet again another S; it’s the way it drives, stupid!”.
They must do something right in Sindelfingen...
With buying the new S you will feel f*ucked at the first day or week, but happy all the rest of time, with buying a 7er/A8 you will feel happy a day or a week and f*cked all the rest of time, because you know, that the S class is the car for you.

I’m not rushing. Waiting at least another year. Will be fun comparing the W223 to the new 7er.

Wise move. There will be a number of sport/luxury and luxury segment automobiles entering the market place in a year or so time. The upcoming G70/71 BMW 7ers/i7, Jaguars' electric XJ successor, the M-B EQS. You may even be smitten by Audis' eTron GT.

Thanks Jimmy However with > 70,000 km per annum (and sometimes + 700 km per day) BEV isn’t an option. Curious about that JAG though.

Mick, I'm just hopelessly optimistic with regard to a rapid expansion of quick-charge networks in Europe and significantly increased BEV ranges in the coming next few years.

Personally, I don't really see how the W223 has a chance to keep up with its predecessor in terms of sales. The EQS is surely going to siphon some sales from the S-class when it hits the market for those that are ready to make the BEV jump.

Surely there will be some of that.

It was the best selling luxury car at the time. It sold in fewer numbers than other S-Class generations for two reasons: 1. there was a recession during the early 90s: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_1990s_recession 2. production was limited to 8 years, not 12 as it happened with W126

The W140 was still controversial. Look it up. The response to it was mixed across the world. Fact. It was roundly criticized for its look, size, weight and consumption. You brought up sales, I didn’t. Not sure what you aren’t getting. The W223 is NOT by far the most controversial S is my point and that point stands. Most S-Classes are the best selling car of their time, that’s totally irrelabr to what I said. The W140 also received a quick facelift as a result of the criticism. Also fact.

Criticized by whom? Typical customers of luxury cars(perhaps owners of W126) or green socialists(and other frustrated individuals)??? The latter should not even be considered.

Sales do indicate to a pretty good degree whether a car is truly controversial or not!

The W223 is NOT by far the most controversial S is my point and that point stands.
Well, I don't know if you noticed the reactions outside of these forums which have many devoted mercedes fans... the amount of criticism is astounding!

just a very tiny selection of reactions:

No, it received a very minor facelift at "midlife" as it is customary. The facelift didn't change anything of significance, the car wasn't "toned down" in any way, it remained large, heavy and imposing.

Been saying this for a while, the reaction to W223 has been overhelmingly negative, this forum doesn't reflect at all the general consensus.

This really says it all.

Hilarious. You dismiss criticisms of the W140 because it possibly came from people who wouldn't buy such a car in the first place and then post the below:

I can guarantee you the vast majority of the people commenting on those instagram posts do not purchase S-classes brand new.

No, not necessarily. A great example is the Bangle era cars. Highly controversial cars, especially the E65 7-series, yet they frequently outsold their predecessors in important markets like the U.S. I was initially revolted by them then turned around and bought a E60 5-series.

It was criticized by the press and consumers alike. GO BACK and read the articles of the introduction for the W140. Now you're telling me that depending on who the criticism came from dictates on whether or not it is valid? Yet you're showing me some instagram complaints from people who aren't buyers either way?

Again, you brought up sales as an indication of controversy, I did not.

Yep and you know what over on MBWorld some actual BUYERS are putting orders in and that is far more important that what some fans (i.e. NON BUYERS) are doing.

No it got a facelift in the 3rd year of production which was early, and it was due to the criticism on how the car looked, too big and bulky. Look it up man.

I stand what I said, the W223 is not by far the most controversial S_Class, the W140 was just as much so. Just different criticism.

Sorry, but the criticism of the W140 was total BS. The car looked too big!!!. It's a f#cking limo it's not a VW Golf. It was too imposing and was not politically correct!!! Today, this would be used as an advertising slogan. For me the W140 is the most real S class, that possessed a magical aura and was untouchable.

Whether or not it was BS wasn't my point, but thanks.

And you honestly think it's unrelated?

Judging by what's going on in the comments section in the post they just made less than hour ago, yes I do believe it's unrelated. I see a bunch of Russian spam related to a social media personality.

Aren't the comments related to the russian grand prix?
