^She never said new S is exciting. She said she is excited about it.
There is not an exciting car in this entire segment. That is not what this class of vehicles is about. Exciting belongs to E63/ M5.
What a strange statement. A panamera turbo is an exciting car, so is an S63.

AUDI??? Really? Can you name an AUDI that have the interior switches of the same level with a W221? Lets just compare some of them:

Despite the fact that I really love the D4 interior, it's not even close to W221 in terms of small details. Every detail in a W221 was unique, not seen in other models. They were very well made and there was a feeling of quality. That's what I call attention to small details. I think W222 is the best in terms of the overall interior design, but have some flaws for which I see no excuse. But the small details are still there. The thing how they integrated the climate buttons into the design. It's just genius!

As for the vents - it was ok back then with that "loaded" design. W223 has the new clean design with the large areas of clean almost straight surfaces. So the vents are out of place there for me. The car of the future cannot have the vents from 80's. They should have asked AUDI, BMW and Bentley how to do it)

The photo of the W221 interior also highlight the problem I have with the current interiors. The area around the window switches on the door panel is trimmed in leather. However on the newer cars, it is just plan old cheap and nasty plastic.

I agree with this statement. The segment here for me is MB S-Class, Audi A8, BMW 7 series and Porsche Panamera. I find myself preferring the M5 as I was hoping the S-Class would be my next car. For me the draw of the S-Class is more due to the name and to me it does look better than its competition. The jury is still ou, but I am not excited and do not feel like it is the obvious choice for me. I may end up with the S-Class but it is not a feeling of "I got to have this car." Maybe when I ssee it in person all this will change, but the rear end. :(

Now I am excited about the new Ghost and maybe Flying Spur, but they are truely in a different class and just too much coin.

Yesterday evening, an automobile was presented that made me glaringly aware of what a dinosaur the W223 has become.

Well, the w223 is still in the game but I somewhat agree with you.
Lucid, the company itself has - in my opinion - a very good and fresh approach to how to make a car, and by make I mean everything from the basic idea through manufacturing and eventually selling it. This time they came out radically, battery efficiency and tech innovations are a not seen elsewhere; then commercial use batteries; car to car charging; platform sharing with other manufacturers; that approach of creating the interiors like GTFO... where did we see anything like that? ...They got a real identity.... Mercedes has and had all the resources and opportunity to invest into battery tech, to make a commercially available platform on which other carmakers can build, they just treat this whole electrification as a slow evolution, instead of an opportunity to radically change things in the industry. Even Tesla is behind Lucid in many ways now, hopefully they learn from them and will deliver better products in the future.

Certainly, the W/V223 will enjoy a few years of supremecy in its' respective segment. However, its' sustainability is more than highly questionable and the EQS + derivatives will be M-Bs' luxury category future. The big question is: will the EQS be an automobile that is representive of the forefront of cutting-edge technology ? I'd love to see it, but am admittedly skeptical. As things stand at the moment, I would guess that Audis' (VAGs') "Artemis" initiative has the most promising prospect of confronting Lucid, Tesla, etc. head-on. However, it will be 3-4 years time before we'll be seeing the first "Artemis" luxury segment entries on the road.

Eventually, it's feasible that Lucid will supply legacy manufacturers with their tech. It could be a main objective of their (as well as Teslas') business model.

Look, all excitement around Lucid aside, let's be fair here... relatively speaking, the Lucid Air is vaporware compared to a Mercedes Benz S-Class. So let's focus on the latter in this thread rather?

I knew it had to be the Lucid Air.
It looks very futuristic but at the same time there’s something really strange about the way the roof meets the back, should have been a hatchback imo.

Danke Jimmy!
Didn´t know about the Lucid Air. It´s stunning….
From my perspective, the new S class is the best luxury car.
But knowing Lucid Air now I feel that the new Benz is also a missed chance because they could have done better.
The question is: Will there be a comparable high speed long distance mile muncher delivering utmost comfort during the ride?
This is genuine S class territory.

.... it's so odd that you think Mercedes isn't capable of engineering a different solution if they wanted to...
Where did I say that? I am talking about a lack of effort. I, as a longtime fan of the brand, want Mercedes cars to be "overengineered" not "underengineered".

Thank you. That comparison is for the EQS thread.
