Walnut combined with the dotted lines middle console.
Thanks!
Several reasons made me to decide now:
- first of all; it’s a very good looking, elegant sedan which, in it’s former iterations (W221 and W222) has proven to be a perfect fit for my daily driving profile. I’m sure W223 will be the perfect fit as well;
- after almost three years of production, the usual start-up problems will be ironed out;
- the more I see it on the road, the more I like it
- undoubtly some brand loyalty;
- rumor has it, the non-4Matic I6 diesel will be axed coming facelift time, or even in the coming model year, and be replaced by just one 4Matic diesel I6. Without going into details, I don’t want an AWD car;
- and finally, I’ve made a good deal.
I haven’t got it yet, so the your questions about comparising W222 to W223 will have to wait.
The unavoidable question: why a W223 over a G70 7er?
Keeping subjective aspects, like design out of the discussion, the main reasons are it’s sheer size and it’s interior. The Netherlands is a small country with many people living there. Room is a scarce commodity. Using a car on a day to day basis for many miles and in all kind of different places, such a big car is just impractical.
A client of mine just very recently is the proud owner of an i7. He’s got the nappa/Merino leather interior. What surprised me most, was the amount of cheap, shiny black plastic (yes, just like I always used to moan about for the W223) in the interior. The armrest partly front and back, parts of the middle console, it’s there. The driver screen is installed on the dash, just like that and not really integrated. Apparently those aspects (the use of cheap, shiny plastic and driver screens thrown without any love on the dashboard) are a new German disease, because the S suffers from the same. Last issue I have with the 7er is that it’s got a glass roof that can’t be opened, for me useless, offering the drawbacks of a glass roof without offering the advantages.
Did you drive the 7 and how would you compare it with the S?
How did you feel about the 'crystal' elements?
'The more I see it on the road, the more I like it'...indeed the S remains are masterclass in restrained design IMO. It's pretty, elegant and expensive looking without being brash. Still looks entirely fresh and I doubt anything is going to date it, other than a new S.
