The monoblocks are the coolest Mercedes wheels in the last 20 years, for sure.
They remind me on the full AMG wheels from the 90’.
Even on the G-wagon they look perfect

You can get those wheels from the factory on the G too?

Don’t want to sound like a negative kind a guy, but Mercedes is starting to lose me.
I know, they couldn’t care less, but I do!
Never really liked the S AMG iterations, but this one tops it in a negative way.
@Special mentions the W140 as an elegant S. Talking about elegant S the W140 wouldn’t be the first that comes to mind, but it’s 10 times better looking than this new S63e.
W223 is mediocre styled to begin with, but is considered to be rather handsome, because the competition makes it easy on him. That mediocracy combined with the plastic Panamera grille makes it, no, not ugly, but uninteresting, tacky and slightly pathetic.

I should add: While it is true that sales determine design direction, it is also true that we're dealing with an endemic aesthetic crisis in automotive design. I haven't studied the historical coordinates of the situation, but to my eyes, it is apparent that contemporary automotive designers just aren't as skilled with their concepts and crafts. i.e., regardless of a market's 'taste' or a manufacturer's 'opinion' on design direction, the execution of design ideas is increasingly poor (e.g., the EQ range, 7, or new the Maser) and conceptually conservative or limited to begin with (e.g., the S-class, 3er, or anything from Lexus). I think the archetypal forms of automotive design need a major overhaul, and the challenges of integrating EV tech into the same old archetypes add to the archaicness and anachronism of what we see nowadays. Personally, I would love to see designs that begin to hide the tyres/rims more, eliminate the exhaust pipe altogether, and disguise the front and rear lights in the overall design.
I personally agree with your take on the future of car design. Now that EV vehicles are focusing on aerodynamics it would be great to see some new designs that mimic the older concepts from the 70s and 80s with their enclosed/covered up wheels smoothed off front and rear lights.

Ford had some great concepts focusing on aerodynamics such as the Probe III (Cd - 0.22) and then later Probe V (Cd - 0.137)

I think Mercedes should consider following even their own concept designs into production such as the streamlined F015, which maximizes interior space into its compact body, has short overhangs and looks quite sleek and sexy in a way. This shows aerodynamic can be beautiful unlike the dog ugly EQ models, which are the low point in Gordon Wagener design career at MB,

Hi Mick - I completely agree. MB lost me...
After having driven the W116, W126 (my father´s cars), W221,W222, W223 I am now getting a BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe in January.
Sad to say....

I agree, I hope your issues with the interior are fixed with the coming update. I don't mind the exterior, but only in Non AMG form now.

Indeed. And speaking of the aerofoil/teardrop/egg shape, there are already better experiments/concepts in the history of the luxury segment than what we see today. This is the Renault Talisman from 2001, which would look fresh, radical, and luxurious as a contemporary EV:

Or the Vel Satis 1988 concept that I'd personally buy right now if offered on the market:

From S-Class to an 8er GC, now thats an concrete downgrade, sad to read that man..

At our houme there’s S-Class since 1972, my father: W108, W116, 2x W126, W140 and then myself W140, 3x W220, V221mopf
I think after new year i will go with an V222mopf 560 or maybe even 63 (depends on how good the leasing conditions will be).
I think that the 222 is the last true S-Class, which still looks aristocratic and bossy - the 223 lost its “S-classiness”.
On the other hand i’m also looking at the EQS, which nowadays has some crazy leasing actions - obviously it doesnt sell well.
For 690 €/month with 16.000 € downplayment you can get an EQS350, which is crazy: an standard S350d will cost you almost the 2x/month.

I don't understand what MB's plan is in terms of release of the S63. They unveiled 2 prototypes and now what? - wait for another month or more for more colors and pics? There is no word on the DOG or order banks or possible month of release.

I don’t see how it’s any different from any other release at this point.

We went from a W222 350D to an M850i GC, and I concur. When the showroom glitz wears off, the GC is lacking in many areas.

Interesting - though I really liked my F06 back in the day - I felt the same exact way going from a W221 to the F06 after the dust settled.
