Must be the power of familiarity, but 222 looks better in almost every side by side I have seen, including this one.

I am kind of annoyed at the slow drop for the S 63e and S 73e. Not to mention the Panamericana grille is not looking too promising. Also, no real body changes as in the E Class (front fenders).

Yeah it’s definitely time to get on with it.

AMG S class never had a big difference in body style over the normal one. And honestly , I can't imagine a "beefed" up version , because S class is S class...

But that late release is a real bummer.

I bet the new 7er will release M760i or whatever it will be called , on launch , to steal AMG sales.

Wow love it ...What's the interior colour.
Actually, the interior color is off (camera issue I assume). Sienna Brown is not that “orangish bright“
Also, I don’t know why its stated in video title “customized interior,” all current orders are custom and not off-the-lot :) I was excited thinking it was indeed something special.

Mercedes S-Class mild hybrid ISG diesel is coming

Presumably at the beginning of 2022 Mercedes will bring the recently presented new S-Class with a mild hybrid diesel

In addition to the S 580e plug-in hybrid, Mercedes also offers mildly electrified S-Class. These are the S 450 and S 500 with 48 volt ISG with 21 hp. The integrated starter generator - ISG for short - is located between the engine (located on the crankshaft) and the gearbox. It not only replaces the belt-driven starter, but is also suitable for boosting, recuperation and sailing, thereby reducing consumption.

OM654M is followed by OM656M

After the order approval for the E 300d 4matic and CLS 300d 4matic with OM654M (also with 48 volt ISG) was granted on January 19, 2021, the second generation ISG with 20 PS is now also coming into the S-Class W223 with the OM656M R6 diesel. The 2nd generation is integrated even more directly into the 9G-Tronic NAG3 housing and can therefore be more easily combined with different motors.

Compared to the 48 volt RSG (belt starter generator), which only have 14 hp and still sit where the starter was, the ISG can boost over the entire speed range and support the combustion engine. With the RSG, this only works up to around 2,500 rpm (e.g. with the M264 4-cylinder petrol engine in the C-Class, E-Class and GLC).

The ISG is therefore the perfect technical solution for the Mercedes S-Class.

Mercedes still has to be careful with CO2 fleet consumption. Although the EU's CO2 targets have been achieved in 2020, this will be a little more difficult in 2021/2022, as some special bonuses will be eliminated or melted down. The phase-in credit will no longer apply in 2021 (5% of the vehicles with the highest CO2 emissions were not assessed). The super credits (electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles) are no longer weighted with a factor of 2 for approval within the EU, but with a factor of 1.67 in 2021 and 1.33 in 2022. That is why Mercedes continues to push the tube when developing environmentally friendly drive trains. The OM656 receives a similar revision as the OM654M. The OM656 R6 Diesel is equipped with the 48 volt ISG with 20 hp.

The main features of the OM656M will be:
  • 2,700 bar (instead of 2,500 bar) injection pressure
  • In addition to the SCR catalyst close to the engine to avoid nitrogen oxides, a second SCR catalyst, also with AdBlue injection, is installed in the underbody of the S-Class
  • 2nd generation 48 volt ISG with 20 PS and 180 NM
  • Performance values slightly increased compared to the current OM656 350d and 400d engines

will they keep the two actual versions of the om656 and make a much more powerful one, around 400hp, om656m, as they have done with the om654?
Somebody has the answer?

^ Not much is known yet. But JESMB did just discover some preproduction/test S 48V ISG models which were registered in January. :)

Mercedes S-Class with OM656M 48Volt ISG already in the statistics
  • What does the 1.4% diesel mild hybrid account for? There could already be a couple of E 300d 4matic in the approval (factory approval)? Wrong thought -- there are 21 S-Class (W223) mild hybrid diesels. It will be the S 350d and S 400d with the R6 OM656 which, as the OM656M, should also receive the 48 volt ISG in the 9G-Tronic gearbox bell. They may already arrive with the change year 2021-2 in December 2021. -- translated from JESMB
