No its not. Never ever has a 7er been a worry for the S. Ever !
To some extent I agree, while I personally quite like the 7er, and it might be the only model in their range in the past 15 years which I think was performing quite well on every term all this time, I don’t think it has ever reached the status of the S class, there is just a difference in the perception of the two. It’s like that difference between Bentley and RR, while I personally would take the Bentley because it looks better, and somewhat more sporty, the RR is clearly a step above Bentley, almost all the time. I think the current Ghost compared to the Flying Spur can be the first example when Bentley overdid them on almost every term. And looking at the parent companies, the more upcoming and reasonable competitor might come from VAG in the shape of the Audi A8 replacement, whatever it will be. I think the last two generations of the A8 are really great, and getting closer to the S class.

I would say the F01 7er was quite there with the W221 S-Class. I was stunned when it debuted back in Summer 2008.

You being stunned does not make it close to the s class. It still commanded over 60-70% market share.

That parking scene is insane, when it gets itself back out on the road, look at the wheels, like wtf is going on, very very impressive m

Today I went to see it...

And my first impressions are a little odd.

The car is nice, and the tech is very good.
That 3D screen is very nice.It is not bothering, and it feels polished.

BUT:

1.That 4D sound is a gimmick. Feels like a chinese cheap massage seat...

2.There are big big quality issues. Huge IMO.
(this was a ready-to-buy car)
See the pictures attached. My biggest complain is in the rear, where the doors touch the panel. This ,over time, will leave marks on the door sill. Very ugly

3.This is the most important. Huge price bump. This car is over 20k more. This car was a S500 4matic long, pretty good spec, and was 180000euros. My car is also a S500 4matic long, and I paid for it around 160000euros, but it‘s a V8...

Mixed feelings with it...

What a mess. Not only is the car ugly and poorly design, it’s also poorly constructed.

I honestly like Matt's reviews but when he talks about styling and design I just leave the room and come back when he's done.

S500, anthracite blue.
The old one looks more S-classy and dignified. And it gives you a rock solid feeling the new one is lacking in some areas.
And that touch concept / screen is nice while the car is standing still. But distracting while driving. More details to come.

The fact that this car had so many delays , and yet so many flaws, with the 7er knocking on the door soon , it's kind of worrying....

Yeah if you talk yourself into worrying about nothing. The car will arrive and bugs are unfortunately a part of the first model year on most cars.

Exactly, the w222 was exactly the same at the start.

Maybe the price is what drives my attention to so many details.

To be honest , when I saw that the 3000cmc engine is almost 200k....It was a shock. All this while comparing it to W222 prices.

And let's not forget that the W223 had a good amount of months delay ! I think that they had time to fix many issues.

And also , let's not forget that this car isn't yet on the streets ! There will be many other issues , like any other car

Yeah like I said before it’s nothing new or different from any other car launch. This is much ado about nothing. A defect usually affects more than one car. Nothing new.

Where is this information that the W223 was delayed coming from? @Wolfgang is this the case? I thought MB kept it on schedule for the most part despite Covid.

The W223 debut was delayed slightly, but the car is hitting the streets more or less in the timeframe that was originally planned. I don’t know what Kiki is talking about. Given all of the messes involved with getting the plant set up while still minding Covid protocols probably didn’t help anything, but still not an excuse.

The W222 development program completion, however, was delayed by an entire year.

@Mr Mercedes, I had read somewhere that the presentation of the new s-class should have taken place in April, but due to Covid it has been postponed to September

After watching the review videos there's no denying this car has raised the bar for technology. To be fair most of the tech is available in other cars but what Mercedes has done was make it so much better. The interior is still a bit of a hit and miss for me but as a whole it's by far the best interior in any car to date bar maybe a Rolls Royce.

The exterior is still a no for me but great car none the less.
