Today I saw it in real life. A S 400d 4-Matic, graphit grey/ black interior.
To be honest, I’m sorry I did... this is going to be an expensive pleasure.

Hello Mick,

I assume you like what you saw. Why do you say it will be an expensive pleasure? Is the cost more than a comparable W222?

Hi Mick,
graphite grey was my color of choice. But having seen an E class I refrained from that color.
Any pics?
Best

No pics, I was was just admiring it. The thought of taking foto’s didn’t cross my mind.
I’ll take some when I’m testdriving it.
Previously you were not a fan, especially the interior as I recall - what’s the impression in real? And the rear of course, is it really that bad?

I’m still not convinced by the interior (shiny black plastic parts/steering wheel/iPad direct in front of the driver). It’s clearly the weakest part of the car imo.
The rear looks wide and fitting a car in this class. Quite good in fact. However, looking with squinting eyes, it still reminds me of Seat.

Why not wait another year to avoid the first model year issues and that shiny plastic center. I'm sure they'll address it for the '22 MY.

I suspect that, unlike the 2nd model year of the E-class where wood trim was offered for the center console, I doubt that'll be the case in the S-class. I think the way that the trim curves to side and upwards towards the screen would make it difficult to make.

CNC milling machine would be able to make this shape or maybe also 3D printing.

They made a more or less complicated wood mid console for the W221 facelift.
I am sure they can.

EQS doesn’t look great no, not at all. Once it’s unwrapped we know for sure, but I can’t imagine it looks good. Not in the eyes of the average S class buyer, I’m afraid. When I’m informed correctly, MB are trying to pick up this category of buyers too with the EQS. All I can say, at least one of them they are losing on the way to their S class BEV. Why can’t EQS look like a real S to die for? A classic, sleek and elegant sedan, long hood, normal trunk.

Having seen my first W223 "in the metal in a real life environment" yesterday, I asked myself that very question.

I understand a manufacturers' desire to make what they perceive to be a "bold statement" when it comes to electric cars. But given the stylistic liberties provided by dedicated BEV platforms, I would think that said manufacturers would contemplate the risk of alienating a fiercely loyal customer base such as that of the S-Class. I suspect that the "S-Class demographic" will not applaud a pod-shaped lounge capsule. The W/V223s' longer front bonnet would offer a fine frunk as well. And kindly excuse my droning on about Audis' eTron GT...but...that car displays the compelling packaging opportunities that large, luxurious, athletic 4 door dedicated lower ride height BEVs' can offer. And it appears to be universally recognized as a stunningly beautiful automobile. Not an unsimilar consensus to that pertaining to the W223 actually. But very unlike what is being expressed so far regarding the EQS.

I continue to believe that this would have constituted a fine basis for the EQS:

I think the EQS concept is nicer than this, more contemporary as well, the problem is with the production design, you can imagine how a production version of this would have look like... tragic I believe

I'm attempting to envision the Vision IAA 2015 Concept with the "EQ" signature fascia (headlamps + grillshield) and full-width taillamp band. Retractable door handles and cool 21" S-Class or Maybach multi-spoke rims as well. Replace the intake sculpturing on the lower third of the flanks with a more subdued W223-esque ascending tendon-line and perhaps add the sharp ridge under the sideglass sills for a bit of tension.

Perhaps a talented photoshop artist can help us out here...

The eTron GT and Taycan, while nice looking, have are not space efficient inside. the rear seat has a dearth of headroom and the back seat is not very large overall. The whole purpose of the EQS is to take full advantage of space efficiency that can be derived from a skateboard platform. That’s what’s driving the proportions that I’m personally struggling with.
Given the EQS is supposed to be luxury-first, this is an appropriate priority.

I just hope they can make it look nice. I think Lucid is the one leading here from a large BEV aesthetics standpoint.
