S-Class (W222/C217/A217) [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class. Body styles: W222 (standard), V222 (long), X222 (limousine, Mercedes-Maybach), VV222 (pullman), C127 (coupé), A217 (convertible). Predecessor: S-Class (W221). Successor: S-Class (W223). Production: 2013–2020.
I am attempting to envisage the W222 with a rakish C218 CLS-like greenhouse. Summoning photoshop experts.

If vision is what you want, then Robert Lesnik is only too happy to oblige:

So do we still think Wagener and his design team don't know what they're doing? I personally blame all the recent 'fumbles' on Pfeiffer before he bowed out. There was obviously discord with Pfeiffer's design about faces (organic/angular with an extreme wedge/organic) and where Wagener wanted things to go (organic and proportion driven).

Looking at the multitude of photos and configurations posted, one can only conclude this S-class is simply marvellous. I have unbelievably high expectations for the C-class now.

Mr. Merc
This is something I wrote in the Official CLA thread some time ago:

I said it once on the S-Class thread Part III, and I'll say it again: Those lines, IRL look nothing like in the picture. They are waaay accentuated in the picture. On the B-Class, they are noticeable just. On the A-Class, they look just right. I think that car would look boring without them. Whether that design will age well or not, only time will tell.
Personally, I think MB nowadays is in the same kind of Bangle-era that BMW was just a few years ago. IMHO, Bangle's BMWs were ahead of their time, and only now do we see how great design the Z4, or the E60 5 Series are. Even the E65 7 Series looks better after so many years. I think same will happen to current design of the A-Class and such.
And obviously, since MB is nowadays in design-transition, some cars had to be 'collateral damage' of it. The C, the SL, the GLK (who I think looks better now), and most recently, the E-Class.
In the end, I wouldn't blame Wagener just yet: head of design is more of a 'bridge' between designers and board of directors, than just a designer.

Benz's Bangle era is less polarizing than BMW's, and it seems Benz's cars are progressive not too much, but not too little. Again, we will see if design will age well. My guess is - it will. Let's not forget that GW designed our beloved W221. I wasn't sure at the beginning, but now, I'm kinda glad he is head of design:)

One thing: did they add Magic Sky Control as an option to the Panoramic sunroof in the S Class? It would make a sense, since they made Magic Vision Control available.

Pagani, I don't think it is a preview of 4 dr Coupe, rather it's designer's illustration/vision/artistic expression of the S Class.

However, if they make one... I don't wanna even think about it. I almost burned waiting for the S-Class, and now I'm a bit depressed since I'll never own one:D S-CLS would be too much for me.

Oh wow! 4-door coupe?

Now THAT would be absolutely GRAND ! But alas, I believe that this may be a somewhat older, very "stylized" sketch of the W222 sedan. From what I understand, a decision has yet to be made regarding the introduction of a W222-based 4 door coupe. As mentioned earlier, perhaps the successor to the C218 CLS will be moved upmarket in order to make room for an additional 4 door coupe based on the upcoming W205 C-Class.

I think alignment would look something like this:

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe - CLA - A3 Sedan
BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe - W205 based 4dr coupe - Audi A5 Sportback
BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe - (today's) CLS - Audi A7

If they make S-CLS, it would rival Panamera, Rapide, perhaps Quattroporte... The CLS moniker could be moved upmarket, but they won't abandon current CLS segment. And then, you have to wonder if they are ever going to make 2dr CLS:whistle:
Zee Germans are obsessed with what another two are doing, so they all end up offering the same product with their own badge:D

Fully Autonomous S Class Could Arrive Before Launch Of Next-Gen Model: Report

The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class revealed yesterday and set to go on sale this fall has all the technology needed to operate fully autonomously, but has been programmed not to due to a lack of legislation. That’s according to the head of Mercedes’ R&D division, Thomas Weber.

"We can do it now, but there are rules in place that we have to accept," Weber explained to British outlet Auto Express.
That doesn’t mean we’ll never see a fully autonomous S Class. Weber went on to reveal that Mercedes is preparing for the launch of an S Class that can drive

itself with no involvement from the driver whatsoever. He also revealed that there are prototypes capable of driving in full autonomous mode and that a production version will come within the latest S Class’ lifetime, suggesting it may be introduced as part of the model’s mid-cycle facelift.

The latest 2014 model does already feature an autonomous system, however. Called Steering Assist, it allows the car to crawl through traffic and drive along highways by itself, though due to regulations the driver needs to have his or her hands on the steering wheel at all times. It starts working as soon as Mercedes’ existing cruise control system, Distronic Plus, is activated by the driver.

If Mercedes does launch a fully autonomous S Class, chances are drivers in the U.S. won’t be allowed to take advantage of the technology. As we reported only yesterday, hurdles in legislation rather than technology will likely hold back the rollout of self-driving cars in this country.

I wonder why Robert Lesnik is not in any of the design videos? Does anyone know who the Asian gentleman is? He doesn't appear to be the same guy featured in the CLS design videos/photos.
The design process at Mercedes is kind of different that the one at BMW in the sence that not (like in the case of BMW) only one designer is responsible for executing their original idea, but some designers start, other pick up and maybe someone else finishes.
The original design proposal that "started it all" if you will, is courtesy of Mr. Il-Hun Yoon, who has been referred to as the Asian gentleman in the in video. Robert Lesnik either finished the design, meaning he was responsible for the best possible transformation from the 1/4 scale model to the full scale model, or he was in charge of finishing it, supervising Mr. Yoon.
The interior designer you can see in the video is Peter Balko.

If they do a big CLS type car I'm going to just die. It should be super sleek with just enough room in it for someone of decent size to have headroom in the rear, but a dramatic look, way different from the S-Class.

I think the S-coupe mule leads to a positive outlook regarding your expectations.

Why not just update the CLS instead of another four door coupe?

LaArtist is there a piano black option for the wood trim?

I actually look forward to the Pullman. I hope it will have a slightly more bespoke front and rear end. The interior is fine, but Mercedes can improve it if they see fit.

Can someone please provide some technical aspects on the Magic body control. Any links of publications from Merc would be very helpful and thanks "La" for those amazing photos.

The new S makes the Rolls Royce look like tasteless hummer sedan with grandmas closet dashboard:D
When i see all the pics and specs i can say for the first time that i'm glad about the death of Maybach.

According to Jesmb.de Mercedes will introduce 9G transmission this September at IAA and it will be available on S class by the end of this year.
