S-Class W222 [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).

This is something I feared. I even asked someone on this forum to explain me if it was going to be based on the new MRA platform or not. Mr Merc had post (I believe from 2010) in which it was mentioned that the first MB to be based on the MRA platform will be W205 C Class. (He posted an article from a magazine). New platform is not mentioned nowhere in press release, nor magazines.

The upside is this:
1. The S Class will keep its bespoke-ness - it has its own platform, unlike other Benzes, AND unlike its competitors who use modular platforms. This is a big factor in this segment.
2. This probably made developing of the car significantly cheaper. Bear in mind, however, this platform, although it isn't all new, it is enhanced. It is (a bit) lighter, and different materials are used.

The downside:
3. It is, after all, 8 years in production, and one would have to question if the platform can cope with new technologies which will appear and be fitted to the car.
4. Competitors are not going to sit with their hands crossed, especially BMW (who invested huge money in CFRP production facility in USA. My belief is that the next big thing in auto industry will be use of advanced materials, and I can see MB lagging here).

I'm not a technical guru, maybe Martin can help you. But I find it hard to believe a 50% increase in torsional rigidity can be achieved be making minor changes to an existing 8 year old platform. At least, the 50% increase is what I picked up somewhere in the press release I think..

This whole platform thing is really silly as hell IMO. What difference does it make if the car is done right? This new S is stunning, yet we're already trying to find flaws because of what platform it may or may not be based on. BMW uses the same platform for the 5, 6, 7 and have been taking their lumps in the press because of it, from the 528i to the Ghost and even the M cars based off this chassis has been criticized for weight and lacking the proper driving qualities that made BMW a BMW.

The W221 in fact was an all new design from the ground up and if Mercedes has further enhanced that platform to net this stunning W222 before us, then what is the problem? Car companies rarely redesign a car from the ground up nowadays, BMW and Mercedes included. BMW will lighten the next 7 I'm sure but I seriously doubt it will some ground up redesign made out of carbon fiber, they will enhance/lighten the existing platform and redesign certain components IMO. Same thing Mercedes has just done.

If these cars companies didn't tell you what platform is being used nobody here would know either way in cases like this.

Now a "Maserati" based on a Chrysler is cause for worry IMO.

When I heard W222 shares the same length wheelbase with W221,I felt a little surprised.Same things happened in Toyota, when Toyota unveiled the 3rd generation Lexus GS in 2004,its wheelbase is 2850mm,through the years,4th generation GS still keeps 2850mm length wheelbase. We all know,4th GS handles much better than the 3rd GS even though they have the same wheelbase.
Maybe W222's platform is originaled from W221,but heavily enhenced and modified.

I'm sick of this car looking this good. So tired of you all posting pictures of something I can't drive right this second.

Lol..Shame on all of you for stressing me out like this....Almost passed out yesterday! Too much S-class goodness for me to handle.

So you guys know, wheelbase can be shortened or lengthened, therefore same length does not equal same patform. 216 shares chasis with 221, yet wheelbase is shorter. Does the older platform, if fact, introduce an academic fly in the ointment? Possibly. But then again, the car is a pretty good consolation prize.

I look forward to see some more light shed into this. I think the S-class is not a model where MB would d!ck around with old chassi.

I LOVE the red ambient lighting! Pink, not so much, but then again I am sure it will float someone's boat. Red is like being at a posh decadent night club. Looks like it could get overwhelming at night, though.

In the Vision Accomplished video, at 0:26 you can see the 7 colors shown on the screen. I kinda wish there was green too.

@Serpens

If it's based on W221, why were they testing it for such long time? ;)

Those were my original thoughts too- like I said in my post, I have a hard time to believing all this new tech could be loaded on to the previous gen platform, especially considering the W205 C-class will be getting a lot of this tech when it debuts too. It doesn't bother me either way. I know Mercedes obviously has a plan, I'm just curious as to what this means in terms of electronics architecture in the future.

Somebody please compare base price and fully equiped of w221 and w222 and its competitors. It would be very interesting to see how MB position the new S.

Ambient lighting in Burmester speakers is too much. Also, I don't like that colors of ambient lighting (red, blue, purple etc.), white is much better IMO.

JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!! That interior might be the best in the whole automotive industry... the car as a whole is surely the best already... DAMN! Amazing job Mercedes... AMAZING!

May 15 - Worship and Praise the S-class
May 16 - Review videos and complain about things we don't fully understand or haven't taken the time to review the press release

Hmm..Looks like we are right on schedule.

Hint - Read the full press release before debating about how it compares to the W221's platform etc. There should be something in that booklet MB provided. If not, then feel free to continue the debate party.
