S-Class (W222) [Official] Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222)

The Mercedes-Benz W222 is the sixth generation of the Mercedes Benz S-Class produced from 2013 to 2020, serving as the successor to the W221 S-Class and predecessor to the W223 S-Class. The W222 has a similar design theme to the C-Class (W205) and E-Class (W213).
We know the S-class design was selected from clay models late in 2009. This means that design development and refinement likely continued throughout 2010. But this gives us only a 3 year lead up time from design freeze to production, maybe 4. I thought @SCOTT27 mentioned Mercedes had a 5 year lead up time?

Lukewiss, I would suspect they would wait for 'feedback' before working on the FL?

I'm here.
The U.S. market is going burst wide open when this car arrives. There is TennMB, I bet he can tell us what the orders are looking like.

TennMB you out there??????

I have several orders for the new S. We'll see in the long term. Those numbers are ambitious based on the projected pricing. I'd hate to them try to pick a number and hit that, as opposed to keeping the car slightly out of reach. If they build them in the quantity to hit those numbers the result could be inventory sitting. And when these horses sit, they eat a lot of hay. This hurts the prestige and absolutely crushes resale. The 221 resale has been decent because 1) not over produced. 2) has been a lot more reliable than the 220.
Although I expext 221 resales to drop once the 222 is here.

I like the idea that any jack leg can walk-in and buy a Lexus LS and pick their color. There is nothing 'exclusive' about that. The S should always have a little haughty appeal.

I agree. There is so much I want to ask you lol. Do you have orders for the CLA, and how is the new E doing? The SL, GL? I think they can hit the numbers without overproducing, but it seems Mercedes has a good handle on gauging the S-Class market. The coupe is expected, but I bet the convertible will far outsell it, making up a good portion of S-Class numbers IMO.

New S-Class Pullman is expected to have a distinctive grille and a luxurious interior that rivals the Rolls-Royce Phantom

Article:
New Mercedes S-class 'Pullman' targets Rolls Royce
Top-spec Mercedes S-class will fill the gap left by Maybach and will target Rolls Royce

Mercedes-Benz plans to spin a full-blown Rolls-Royce Phantom rival from its new S-class model, Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche has revealed.

In an interview with Autocar, Zetsche confirmed that Mercedes-Benz has conceived and developed the new S-class to support six different models, along with three different wheelbases in a move aimed at broadening its reach at the top end of the luxury car ranks.

And that range will be topped by a new ‘Pullman’ model that has been conceived to crown the future Mercedes-Benz line-up, in a position previously occupied by the company’s discontinued Maybach brand.

The ultra-luxury saloon, based on an extra-long-wheelbase version of the S-class, will gain individual styling touches, including a highly distinctive grille aimed at giving it a more noble appearance than standard S-class models.

“We will continue in the market segment above €200,000 [£170,000],” said Zetsche. “It is important that Mercedes-Benz is represented. We have tradition at this level.

“We see a chance to extend our leadership at the top end of the luxury car market. We plan to extend the number of models, and a Pullman is included in those plans.”

The Mercedes-Benz chairman confirmed that the new S-class, due to go on sale in the UK this October, will eventually be sold with the choice of three wheelbases in selected markets.

They include standard, long and extra-long wheelbases — the latter of which has been added to the line-up to satisfy demand for stately limousines in key markets such as China.

At the Frankfurt motor show in September, Mercedes-Benz plans to preview its new CL-replacing S-class coupé in concept car guise, ahead of UK sales in 2014.

The new two-door, which gains more individual styling than previous models, will also form the basis of a new S-class cabriolet, which is planned to go on sale late next year.

Hope the Pullman gets more than just a new grill and "individual styling touches". The new S-class is absolutely fine but buyers at this price range demand something more special and unique, which the Maybach failed to deliver.

This article is hinting that the model to compete with Rolls will not have an entirely different design. Only the grill and the interior details will be different. This imo is not a good strategy. Mercedes, I hope, have studied the causes of demise for their Maybach name. I think the main issue was that the car was not unique enough. And here we go again. Even Mercedes name would not be enough to compete with the aristocratic Rolls if the design has even the shades of W222 ......... and yes its design is attractive. Using the underpinnings is ok, competition also use platforms of lower siblings. This is not the 1960s when W100 was conceived out of the S class of that era. And even W100 was quite different compared to the regular S, I think the body panels were all different for the W100 600. Pullman maybe able to compete with RR Ghost, but Phantom and Mulsanne are in a different league.

Don't know anything on base price for the S, and to be honest, I haven't even asked.

CLA is getting lots of interest, but due to the demographic I don't anticipate a lot of ordering. I have a CLA 45 ordered for a customer, and I know of at least one other 45 order.
The US dealers have basically screwed themselves on the GL by selling to exporters over the last few years. So, Mercedes is just shipping more inventory overseas, and this has created major supply issues. We've had one GL bluetec in the last three months. We It was one I ordered for a buyer. About the same on GL550s. The Florida dealers were selling to exporters, and MBUSA doesn't look favorably on that. So, the rest of us Southern dealers get punished. Of course MB could solve the problem by building the GL in another plant. It's absurd that all world production for the ML and GL is from one plant in the United States. Hell, build the darn thing in China. That's who wants these things.

Facelift on E is doing OK. In my opinion, the luxury model just has too many quirks. I love the sport. They really don't need two models per se. All they need is a sport grill and a luxury grill with non-staggered tires. In fact they could get rid of staggered tires. I promise that if you put staggered tires as an option, no one would order. People in the US, even performance drivers don't care about an extra inch of width on the rear tires, as much as getting more tread life. It's also an added expense for Mercedes. They made a mistake in designing the grill where it cannot be interchanged like it can on the C-class.

The more I'm around the SL, the more I like it. But I just had a customer who owns a 2013 SL, buy an SLK55 AMG. Didn't feel like there was $40k difference in the two. Again, the key to success, long term, for the SL is to keep the production tight. That's a finnicky market.

I get why some people do not like the SL or the F15 X5 for that matter. I adore both cars and honestly do like the SL's looks, front end, rear end, cabin - hell everything about it! Tastes differ and that's such a beautiful thing IMO.

All very interesting. I bet you've probably never seen a GL63 AMG then huh? MBWorld members say they're basically impossible to get. I'm going to drive the FL E350 and see if it is too my liking. SL to a SLK hmmmm, he might regret that.

I'm curious about CLA45 too, exciting times at MB.

I just can't see Mercedes making the same mistake twice. That really long S-Class we've seen testing can't possibly their answer to the Phantom and Mulsanne. Such a car would have to be truly bespoke and nearly all new/different from the S-Class. They just have to know this now you would think. As nice as the new S is, and it really encroaches on the Flying Spur and Ghost, it still doesn't touch a Mulsanne or Phantom, not even close. A modern day W100 is needed and then some.
