GLS [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLS Class (X166)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.
Interesting. In Germany it's EU7616 for the GLE 400 and EU6545 for the GLE 500. :)

Very interesting indeed, so the pricing is about the same around the world. Do you know where MB source the leather from? I will post the photos I took on the GLE thread.

^ Suspect the designo exclusive nappa leathers may be sourced via the Manufaktur in Sindelfingen and e.g. the Eissmann plant near the factory in Alabama. :)

This is the video equivalent of clickbait... and shouldn't be posted. Unless the real thing is a photoshop of the GLS, and has the front cockpit (including 1 of 300 plaque) from the S650, and the rear from the S Class Maybach of course... if it is then I'll admit I'm wrong, until then, some YouTuber is getting ad revenue from posting bull crap, and that makes me maaaadddd... MAAADDDD...

To be honest I like the rear on the GLS Maybach render. It's more difficult for me referred to the front.
I like the headlights design but anything of the front disturbs me. I think it's the lower part of the bumper which looks like a snowpusher for me. At least this was the first was came into my mind.

I wouldn't normally say this about a GLS but that version in that colour looks awesome!

PS. Might include a Mercedes-Maybach version, as suggested by this render. :)

That's stunning but I fear Mercedes are too shy about making the GLS too grand as it could cannibalise S-Class sales. I don't think they have a choice though as long gone are the days when a long saloon is the ultimate status symbol.

They need to overhaul the GLS or else Land Rover and Porsche will keep winning customers who happily spend S63 money on an SUV.

In Mercedes's defence though. I think they mainly developed the GLS as a well-sized 3 row car for the US market and didn't intend it to be an S-Class SUV.

^^ All true. I think they will do it though, I think they reallize what is at stake here. Hell S-Class or GLS, either way they get the $$/sale. The next GLS needs to be stunning like the S was in 2014. End of story. Interior, engines, Maybach versions with a V12 are all needed. With RR, Bentley and Rolls all in the space MB has to react.

I doubt the next generation will be anything but shy. So expect more opulence, engine choices, exclusivity and high costs over today's GLS which is essentially a LWB ML/GLE. Luxury SUVs are affecting luxury sedans hence why the Range Rover is essentially the benchmark of the segment. With the Bentley struggling and Mercedes and BMW are non existent at this level against the Range Rover. So that change to move up to S-Klasse level is inevitable.

They've continually underestimated the SUV market. All the while watching as Porsche and Rover have blasted past the price boundaries MB incorrectly expected. This has been the case since the original ML, which was horribly dumbed down from Mercedes standards. From that point, every Mercedes SUV (sans the G-wagen) has been behind the curve in pricing and appointments. The next GLS needs to be distinct from the GLE and not just an expanded platform.

There are things within the current line that make no sense that expose the disconnect and how bad Mercedes has missed. Sadly, the sales boom (particularly on SUVs) helps to mask this incompetence. The mindset is, "sales are good, what's the problem." The same mentality that caught MB sleeping and opened the door for Lexus back in the 80s. Example, A GLE400, which has the same engine as the GLS450 (as if the nomenclature isn't confusing enough) has standard P1 package, full leather and sport package, which are options on the GLS, yet the GLE is a lower model. P1 and full leather are options on the GLS and you can't even get a sport package. I can say, as a 19 year sales veteran that this makes no sense. When they changed the nomenclature they should have upped the standard equipment on the GLS to include full leather, mb tex dash, and P1 at a minimum. Surround view ought to be standard on a vehicle this size as well. And you ought to be able to get the sport package (look like the 550) as an option on the 450.

Yeah. That nomenclature is confusing! Although sales of Mercedes SUVs are good, the Cayennes and Range Rovers are leading the way in winning customers happy to spend 20-30%+ of the asking price on options.

Mercedes can upgrade the GLS to S-class standards but the car will need a mantra. Technology alone won't be enough as the Cayenne and Range Rovers are packed with enough tech to keep most people happy. What the GLS need to achieve is admiration and respect. The Range Rover attracts him, it and her while the Cayenne has the heart of both yummy mummies and car enthusiasts.

The S-Class was amongst the ultimate status symbols for decades and it's about time Mercedes translates that into an SUV as the popularity of big 4x4s won't wane anytime soon.

I've said this before, but the GLS's current state is simply due to a very obvious benchmark focus on the Cadillac Escalade. It's towing capacity and size were very clearly setting up the GLS to properly do battle. Setting the car up to compete against the Range Rover is a somewhat different endeavor.

I don't see this car having to do anything with the Cayenne, that's more the GLE's job.

The GLS isn't even close to the size of the Cadillac so I don't see how that could have been the focus of MB's engineers/designers.

I agree the next GLS needs to be a breakthrough product like the current S-Class. It will be on same platform as the next GLE though. That can't be helped.

These are very minor things. Almost matterless in the grand scheme of things. Options can be shuffled at any time. The real work that needs to be done is the presentation of the next GLS. Interior, exterior, engines. The V12 needs to be on deck in either a GLS 600 or a Maybach version, or both in different states of tune. The GLE 400 had the same engine as the GLS450, but the hp wasn't the same hence the 400 to 450 designation. The GLE43 now has the same amount of power as the GLS450.
