GLE [Official] Mercedes-Benz GLE (W167)

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.
That was never gonna happen anyway. There was a leak few months, which confirmed the M256 I6 engine(256.830) for the E53 E Performance.
That would just mean the Merc shareholders have read the room wrong.
Having an E580 to compete against the M550i would be fantastic for the brand image, for a start.

Also AMG are purveyors of sports cars. Having a new hand-built AMG engine would again add to the brand cache and they'd have an engine for each segment of the market, and something to compete against the S68 BMWs and that beautiful Ferrari V6 in the Alfa's. Would also allow them to hit broader price ranges for their AMG specific sports cars like the GT, even if regular Mercedes-Benz lineup goes full electric.

Make full use of the MSA architecture with h sports cars or different flavours, and get some good ROI on it.

The V8 non AMG E-Class has never sold well. An E580 would be dead in the water. E500 and E550 models before it never sold well.

Surely it wouldn't hurt to have the option? I can't imagine it would cost them that much to just plop a M176 into engine bay?

But if that's the case then I am a sad man.

If a V8 E500 or whatever didn't sell well, then bring back the good ol' E55 branding with a detuned M177 and around 530PS. I dunno, I just want a V8 sedan that isn't a full-on AMG.

Anyway to the topic of AMG building a hand-built i6. I still think it would be worth whatever investment.

Once ICE mercedes are dead in the water they can still find use in AMGs. Again, leverage the MSA architecture to make different flavours of AMG GT. For example:
  • AMG GTA with the m139L in a smaller chassis; either a 2-seater roadster at a low price; a premium Miata if you will. Or a A45-esque 3-door hatchback to continue to sell to angry youths.
  • AMG GTC with the AMG i6 to complete with the M2/M4 and Cayman GTS. A light and sporty 2+2. A drift mode and some more flair/character than other more overly serious sports cars in keeping with AMG tradition.
  • AMG GTE which is the current GT4-door but rebranded. Add a shooting brake for extra clout.
  • AMG GTS which is just the old Mercedes S-class Coupe, but a bit lighter and taughter if at all possible. Something to sit against the Aston Martins of the world. This one probably isn't necessary, but I just want one to exist. A large grand tourer that also handles and steers well when poked, but is smooth and comfortable enough to cross continents. Heck, maybe this is what the AMG SL should have been - both in coupe and convertible format.
  • AMG GTR to continue to offer up as a sharp alternative to the 9/11. Make it lighter and maybe shorter and just a 2 seater again (bring back transaxle again pls?) If needed.

I see so much potential in a modular sports architecture - particularly in a future where the standard modular architectures or all pure EV based. Low volume would be expected for each model, sure, but at least the architecture can spread its cost amongst products at different price points and intended for different markets. Whilst also maintaining/returning some prestige to what has become a commoditised brand in AMG.
Or am I just living in Dreamland. Forgive a man of his rambles.

The GLE lineup is so f#cking confusing.

GLE 450 with 375PS
GLE 53 with 435PS
GLE 53 with 449PS
GLE 580 with 510PS
GLE 53 Hybrid with 544PS
GLE 63S with 612PS

Why are there so many GLE53 variants????

Change it to
- GLE 450 - 375PS
- GLE 45 - 449 PS
- GLE 53e - 544 PS
- GLE 580 - 550 PS
- GLE 63s - 612 PS

On the Mercedes German site, they only have the GLE 53 with 320kw (435PS) and then a GLE 53 Hybrid with 400kw (544PS) , but it has a 330kw (449PS) version of the inline six.

I also don't understand why they don't drop the regular model and only sell the Hybrid version; it makes alot more sense.

Probably because some buyers don’t want to bother with a plugin in order to get an AMG version of the GLE.

Does anyone have a sense on when the 2nd facelift will be on sale? Test vehicles have been spotted already.

I think the market for V8 SUVs is higher than the Sedan. Particularly in the US. The V8 might get discontinued in RoW, but I think they'll have it in the US, because they expect a V8 in a $90,000+ SUV
That’s why the GLE53 makes little sense. It’s like they weren’t able to get a good product plan in place which ended up having both the 53 and 580 fighting for the same market share. They should have just consolidated both models and made the 580/53 more sporty with that V8

I don't disagree with you. Tbh I always thought the GLE 53 if they needed a sporty 6 cylinder, should have been the GLE43. And then a GLE55 with a 500hp V8 could be the AMG lite.

Same with the E classe, but alas. I'm sure there's some compliance f#ckery going on in all this.

Thanks. I did not know about the GLE 580. I have found one for sale in the UK too!

It's strange that they didn't change the rear part
